"I'm sure that she must have," Kyla replied. "Or if she didn't it was just an oversight. We were kind of busy."
Boleman shook his head. "You came right out and asked her, but she never answered. It's just...weird."
"It's not important," Kyla told him. She looked into his eyes. "Would you like to hold your son?"
Awkwardly, Boleman took the baby from Kyla's arms. At first the child let out a small cry, but Boleman adjusted the way he was holding the baby and soon he quieted down. "I always dreamed but never thought that it would happened. Kyla, thank you so much. I can't tell you how much this means to me."
"Has the adoption paperwork gone through?" Kyla asked.
"We're official," Boleman said. He stared at the baby for several microns. "What made you decide to name him Turner?"
Kyla yawned. "They called Turner 'The Great Traitor' because he stopped Pierce's first takeover attempt, making him a traitor to their vision of the human race. And Brie...well...she helped me to get my life back. I wanted to thank her for that in some way. I will check with her, make sure she doesn't mind..."
"I'm sure she'll be flattered," Boleman replied. He grinned. "I'm sure she'll also appreciate the irony, Pierce's son being named after her husband."
Kyla yawned again. "He's your son now, in every way that matters.” She stretched.
“I can see you’re tired,” Boleman observed. “If you want, I can take the baby in the other room, let you get some rest.”
“Let me see him one more time,” Kyla asked. Boleman brought the baby close and Kyla kissed him on the top of his head. “Good night, Turner. Welcome to life. I love you very much.”
Using one hand, Boleman carefully closed the door to Kyla’s room and entered the small living area. He considered placing the baby in the cradle that he had been able to requisition, but instead he sat down in the rocking chair that he had given to Kyla. “My son Turner,” he said quietly to the sleeping newborn. “I’m going to make sure that nothing bad ever happens to you and your mother. You know why?” He looked up and glanced at Kyla’s closed door. “Because I love you both.”
