Following the explosion of the hand mine, Lucian noticed no further fire from the smoke-filled area. He heard a rising hum about that time, and thinking it was a Cylon bomb about to go off, sank to the deck behind the column, ducked his head, and pulled his feet up under him, trying to make himself as small as possible for the coming explosion. A micron later, he arose rather sheepishly on realizing that the strange hum was actually the sound of the Cylon's exhaust system being activated. Seeing that he was in the best position for an assault on their position, he quickly checked his assault rifle, and then signalled to the nearest Troopers and called, "Covering fire!" as he slipped around the column at an oblique angle approach to the entrance of the storage rooms. The remaining Colonial Troopers poured leading shots into the area, hopefully clearing the way for him.
A few steps later, with the smoke clearing rapidly, Lucian called, "Cease fire! Cease fire!" as he threw himself against the bulkhead near the door as two Troopers did the same from the opposite side. They saw the mangled remains of three Cylons scattered in front of the entrance. The Troopers gave Lucian a quick signal, then both went through the opening, high low, assault rifles blazing. Lucian stepped up to the side of the opening, took a breath as he prepared himself to go in to face near certain death in the form of Cylon laser fire, but the "Room clear!" call came just as he was about to push himself off to make his entry. Several more Troopers charged past Lucian into the room to help clear out any other rooms that branched off of that one. One of the Troopers gave Lucian a quick salute as he passed, but with the armor and helmet, Lucian could only tell the guy was male by the sound of his voice saying, "Thanks for the backup, Sir, we'll take it from here."
Lucian turned to look at the carnage. Of the three downed Troopers, two were already dead, and two Med Techs were attending to the third one, struggling to keep the young man alive. Lucian looked to the Cylons then. Two were holed and smoking, and the third was mangled as if it had been standing right over the hand mine when it detonated. Lucian was about to order their remains to be pulled over to the side, but he noticed a slight flicker in the roving eye screen of the mangled tinhead. It had lost the lower part of its torso, one of its arms, and most of the other one, but even then, it started struggling to rise using its remaining arm stump. Another Trooper ran up and leveled an assault rifle at it before Lucian commanded, "HOLD FIRE!" Kicking everything away from the Cylon in case it could somehow use the debris as a weapon, Lucian stepped on the torso so the stump could not contact the deck, effectively pinning the dying Cylon....

As soon as the fire abated, someone took the computer gear from Weasel's grip and pulled Ally to her feet. The group of harried warriors abandoned the gun and moved out and around a corner in search of safer ground... Lords of Kobol! Brik had been thinking that the squads made a decent team and maybe, just maybe, everyone might go home. Then Hush. Then Janey. Lords, why her?!? And then, as if the price weren't already too high... Weasel. At this point the battle that had lead to this mission, that had introduced him to Ally and thereby brought all of Bronze into the mix, seemed eons ago, more a story of distant history than the events of his and their lives within recent days. And now it seemed like a nightmare from which there was no awakening. Even worse (if possible) was that based on his own nightmare experience, that lead to one horrifying question: Who would be next? And by the Lords, how in the frack could a centurion sized target take that kind of punishment and just shrug it off?!?!? Why, not even a viper OR raider, or even a capitol ship with it's shielding could simply ignor such a barrage! It's almost as if... As the group of stunned companions made their way through the always lethal insides of the basestar, Brik spoke to Skyler in hushed tones... "Skyler, that was next to impossible, as near as I can tell. The way those purps just stood there taking our rather immense firepower was just... odd!" Brik paused, conveying a feeling of inspired thought finding a way to express itself. Skyler looked at his old friend's eyes as he spoke and saw a kind of desperate madness. He guessed that his own eyes might harbor the same expression. He decided not to comment and motioned for the man to continue. "The sheer kinetic force of those blasts should've at least knocked them down, even if they went unharmed. We just unleashed enough energy to potentially damage this basestar, for Sagan's sake! Here's what I'm wondering: Could it be that the purps utilize, I don't know, some sort of energy shielding? Maybe even something like...like...gravity or something like that!" "Is there any way to find out if those things have some sort of field of energy around them or something?"

Back in what remained of the core, something, someone stirred...
Janey.
She lay on her back, unable to move. Her ears were ringing and her head felt like it might explode. She was trying to focus, to come to her senses, when she heard footsteps close by. Slowly, she turned her head toward the sound.
Her eyes widened and she flinched but could not find the energy to reach for her weapon as the purple cylon came into view....
It looked down at her for what seemed like eternity. It's purple light, sweeping back and forth, was nearly hypnotic to Janey. The cylon leaned over her, and something appeared out of what had looked like a seemless chest. Janey's eyes grew wider still as what seemed to be a probe of some kind extended closer and closer to her. The cylon suddenly raised a foot, and placed it on Janey's chest.
"Call out, human" it said in a robotic voice.
Janey bit back any of the curse-filled responses that came to her mind. She knew now what this probe was. A microphone. A recording device of some kind.
The cylon shifted more weight onto Janey's chest. "Call out, human" it repeated.
Janey bit her lip, trying to keep from crying out. She began to squirm under the weight, and in spite of her efforts began to moan. The pressure increased some more, and a cry exploded from her. Her mind could not begin to grasp why this cylon wished to record her death cries.
"Call out, human" the cylon said again, and again it pressed harder on Janey's chest, making it hard for her to breathe.
Janey realized that the cylon meant for her to call out to her friends. The pressure on her chest was unbearable now, and suddenly she knew she'd do anything to get the cylon to stop. "Ally!" she screamed out. "Logan!"
The microphone began to retract, but the pressure on Janey's chest continued to increase. Janey coughed, and blood came up when she did. Her eyes began to glaze over, her stare unfocused.
Suddenly a shot rang out, and the cylon toppled, falling backward heavily to the deck. Janey coughed some more, managing to roll onto her side, looking around to find where the shot came from as she greatfully sucked in air.
"Underneath you" Hush whispered. He reached a hand up through the grated floor, interlocking his fingers with Janey's.
"W-what took you..." Janey coughed out, "....so...long....?"
"I came to and saw him there, but I couldn't move or else he'd know I was under this grating" Hush whispered. "I had to wait for him to get into my sights. I knew I'd only get one shot..." He swallowed hard, "...and I didn't know if it would work."
Unexpectedly he suddenly started to laugh.
"Wha---what's so funny?" Janey rasped.
"Brik was right" he said. "You were right. There is a port back there. Right between the legs. Heck of an angle to hit it though."
Janey started to laugh, then began to cough.
"Are you okay?" Hush asked. He felt her squeezing his fingers. "Let me get out from under here. We'll make it Janey. I promise...."

The red eye light blinked a couple of times as it shifted from side to side, then finally settled on Lucian. "Humans are so weak," it intoned, "you...you are afraid...to let your fellow weakling destroy me. Human 'morality' and sentimentality lead to a weakmindedness that is difficult for us Cylons to understand. With your myriad weaknesses, it is...unfathomable...that we have not annihilated you before this. Can you...weak human...overcome your fear and destroy me?"
Lucian drew his sidearm and adjusted the setting, then waved off a couple of Troopers who shifted to cover him. He pointed the laser pistol at the Cylon's head and said, "Mr. Cylon, those human traits you cite as weaknesses are what makes us who we are. Our morality gives our people a type of guideline we can live by. That sentimentality that you abhor helps us remember where we came from and how we got where we are. If those traits make it difficult for you to understand us, so much the better. For now, Mr. Cylon, this conversation--"
The shot rang out and surprised the Troopers, at least one of whom uttered a loud string of obscenities. The Cylon's red eye blinked twice, then slowly shifted to the smoking remains of its previously remaining stub appendage. Shifting its visor eye back to focus on Lucian, the centurion said, "Human...you were going to kill me. How could you have missed?"
A thin smile crossed Lucian's face as he replied, "And that is a serious weakness of you bloody Cylons, always misreading the situation when it comes to us humans. You see," he said as he reholstered the laser pistol, "I didn't miss, Mr. Prisoner."

He had warned them time and time again to not underestimate the new breed of Cylons, but the looks on his comrades faces told Lazant that they had thought that he was exaggerating. Sometimes, he hated being right.

Hush worked his way out from underneath the grating, which as far as he could tell had been once part of the ceiling. How he'd survived the explosion, how they'd both survived, he hadn't a clue. He worked himself free finally, and the delicate balance of debris that had made a place of safety for him collapsed in a heap of twisted pieces of metal, with Janey on top of it all. She gasped, then groaned at the sudden shifting of her position.
Hush got unsteadily to his feet. His left shoulder hurt like someone was inside with a stack of needles. His legs hurt to stand on them, but he was happy to see them support his weight. His ears were ringing, but he felt alert. He knelt down by Janey, gently lifting her head.
"You look terrible" Janey said in a raspy voice. "Are you okay?"
Hush smiled down at her, nodding. It was amazing. Here she was the one not moving yet, but she was concerned about him. "You, however, look stunning" Hush said gently. "A little crispy around the edges, but stunning."
She smiled, remembering what Grease had told her. "How come the dirtier I get, the more stunning I become?"
"Must be a gift" Hush replied. "Can you sit up?"
Janey nodded that she thought she could, and Hush helped her sit. Her head hurt a lot, her side ten times worse. "Don't suppose you have a big aspirin on you?" she asked. Hush shook his head. "That's okay" she said. "Pain's good. Reminds me I'm alive." She looked over at the cylon. "There's really a port on it's you-know-what? His bum?"
Hush nodded. " Apparently. I didn't know for sure, and I only had one shot to find out. It's impossible to hit though, unless you are directly underneath it."
"Thank the lords you were" Janey concluded, continuing to stare at the wrecked robot. "Why was he trying to record me crying out?" she wondered. "They include a sick and twisted chip with the latest models?"
Hush shrugged. "Research maybe?" he speculated. "Maybe he was going to play it back to try and lure the others...?" He thought of the others for the first time since the explosion. He hoped they'd gotten away and that Logan was safe. He patted Janey gently on the shoulder, then got up and poked his head through the escape panel. There was no sign of anyone there.
No bodies either, he noted with relief. It looked like the others had gotten away. His mind drifted for a moment, thinking of Logan. Then he thought of Weasel, just ahead of him as the minesweeper made contact. It seemed that he'd survived as well.
"They all got away?" Janey asked, one hand gingerly rubbing the side of her head, as if she were trying to massage away her headache, or perhaps probing for a bump there.
Hush nodded. "We'd better too. Can you stand? The escape route is pretty blown apart but I think we can make it through...."

"Help me up" Janey said, reaching out. Hush put his arms around her, and started lifting her with his good shoulder. "Uh!" she cried out, but motioned for him not to stop when he suddenly did for a moment. She got her legs under her, but held her side, obviously in pain. "I think that daggit broke a rib" she said, looking down at the remains of the purple cylon.
Hush's eyes widened. "It stood on your chest until a rib broke? Janey, I'm so sorry. I should have shot sooner."
Janey waved this off. "You did fine." She felt her side gingerly. "Uh. Feels like two." She leaned against a demolished computer station, trying to breathe, feeling pain in her side with every breath. She looked at Hush, her expression suddenly soft and vulnerable. "I gave in, Hush" she said sadly. "I surrendered. I gave that cylon the cries he wanted so he'd stop hurting me." She shook her head. "I always thought if a moment like that came I'd be stronger, but..." her voice trailed off.
Hush gently put his arm around Janey's neck, pulling her close to him. "You didn't give him anything." He pointed down at the cylon. "We're alive, Janey, he's not. But if we don't get out of here, that charge Skyler hid is going to change our conditions in hurry. So no more talk about surrendering, huh? You took two broken ribs. You're the bravest warrior I know."

Skyler and the rest had holed up at an intersection of corridors, and had found a defensible area to rest as they tried to get their bearings in the near full darkness. It was easy to get lost in the endless corridors, and com systems had taken a dive a while back and were still out.
Using Weasel's laptop, Logan was intent on trying to hook into the ships computer system to call up a map to try and determine their location. Brik and Skyler were still speaking in low voices, and Ally kept watch, looking out over the piles of fallen debris, scanning for movement.
Once Ally had thought she'd seen a faint purple glow in the darkness, but she'd chalked it up to her eyes playing tricks as the glow had faded so quickly she hadn't even been sure it was there in the first place....
The lead purple centurion had tracked the group of warriors to the intersection up ahead, and was poised to move into attack range when an upload suddenly started, then stopped abruptly. This was strange, for nothing was capable of distrupting an upload, but yet it had happened. No matter, the cylon and his group instantly went into stealth mode, their telltale purple visor lights fading to nearly nothingness in the darkness of the hallway....
Ally was trying to focus, daring to peek up over the debris when a voice suddenly cut through the quiet. "Ally! Logan!"
Ally's eyes grew wide. "Lords, that's Janey!" she said turning to the others. Then she began to rise up, whispering louder: "Janey? Over here..."
The first shot tore through Ally's shoulder as she stood up over the debris. She began to fall back, and the second shot would have opened her chest had she not gone down so quickly. Suddenly hades opened as fire rained in hot and heavy on the warriors position, and they scrambled low behind the safety of the debris.
Explosions lit up the corridor, and in the flashing light Ally's face was a pale mix of contorted features as she fought the tempting sanctuary of unconsciousness. Then, as suddenly as it began, the barrage of fire stopped, and the warriors had precious microns to decide what to do next....

Lazant was furious. Everything was going to go into his report, no matter who died. He had been hand-picked by Commander Sheba for this mission, the core mission, but Captain Skyler had just pushed him aside. "You're in charge of the fuel operations," he could still hear Skyler saying. "We'll take care of the rest."
Yahrens of expertise had been thrown away just like that. He had to admit, he was almost happy when he realized that the sacred core group had been attacked by the new breed of Cylons. His own part of the mission completed, he grabbed Ike, or was it Wraith, and left to find a way to rescue the rest. "It reminds me too much of the fracking moon mission," Lazant mumbled to himself. "I do my job, then I have to risk my skin yet again to go back and save everyone else. Skyler's fracking pride has thrown his whole team into a mess, and now it's up me to save the day."
"Excuse me, Captain," Ike/Wraith/Whoever started cautiously, "but do you know where we're going?"
Lazant continued forward, the darkness not bothering him. "I know my way around a baseship, it's not exactly the first time I've been on one. You'd think that Skyler would have bothered to read that in my file but no......he's too fracking..." Lazant stopped and help up a hand. "Sounds like there's heavy fire that way. Follow me."

Suddenly hades opened as fire rained in hot and heavy on the warriors position, and they scrambled low behind the safety of the debris. FRACK!!!! That was too close and another loss was too much to contemplate, Ally or anyone else! After scrambling for cover after the initial enemy salvo of fire, Brik looked around to make sure that everyone left was still breathing. Ally was hit but it didn't look fatal and that would have to do for now. And his hypothesis about the cylons and conversation with Skyler would have to wait. There was no time to address a theory and the battle had truly come to them. Let's see...Regular fire (which he had recently witnessed as ineffective) just wouldn't do and he was a warrior, not a scientist. Guess it's time for just being human to count for something, he figured. Hmmn... Think, Brik, think... Still thinking... *DING!* (perhaps) Maybe there WAS something...
