Although Brie was recertified right away, they ran through the simulation several times. She was determined that they wouldn't stop until they had all "survived" and actually felt successful. She recognized the adrenalin rush that the students felt, it reminded her of her time at the Academy. And if she were to be honest with herself, she had enjoyed the session just as much as the students had.
"Thanks for your help," the instructor said.
"Don't mention it," Brie replied. "I'm on my way to the firing range. Do you think that maybe..."
"Please...," the female student said.
Brie looked sternly at the young woman. “Please, what?”
The girl looked embarrassed. “I’m sorry, Ma’am. Please, Lieutenant Flell. Sir.”
Lieutenant Flell smiled at Brie. “If it will help you out, Major.”
Once again, it took little time for the recertification. Brie ran the group through several scenarios with varying success. They got better as they went along. When it was over Brie said good-bye to the students, promising to stop by the Academy when she had a chance. She then started the paperwork to be assigned a new weapon.
“You’re a natural,” Lieutenant Flell said to Brie.
“I hope it would look that way,” Brie replied. “I had my first sim session when I was six yahrens old. I’ve been doing this since before...”
“No,” Flell interrupted. “I meant a natural instructor. If you ever consider leaving Gold Squadron, you’d fit right in at the Training Academy.”
Brie grinned. “Yeah, Captain Lazant would just love to have me around. I'd drive him crazy, and we're friends.”
Flell sighed. “Captain Lazant has grown rather found of suicide missions lately.”
“Lazant is too stubborn to die,” Brie said with a laugh. “And this latest...I’ve read the report. Commander Sheba personally assigned him to the mission.”
“My point exactly,” Flell said. “He’s seeing a bigger picture. He misses the action, I can tell.” Flell paused. “I need to get back. But think about what I said. It was nice meeting you, Major.”
“You too, Lieutenant.” Brie walked backed to her quarters, thinking about all that had happened. She had always said that she didn’t want to ever be assigned to the bridge. Maybe there was an alternative after all.
