Abby butted out her smoke, and brought her hand over, gently putting it over the one holding hers. "I'd love that very much" she replied. "And I should look in on Amy again." She stood as well, and checked her chrono. "It's been longer than I thought" she sighed. "So, should I meet you back here? Tell me when and I'll be here."

After Abby left, Urdea quickly contacted the Bridge but was told that Commander Sheba was away. Colonel Charybdis was also off the Bridge, so Urdea sent a message to both of them requesting a meeting about Elmer's death for the next morning. He dealt with some other paperwork that had accumulated during his absence, then checked his chrono. On seeing that it was close to time to meet Abby for dinner, he stepped into the small turboflush off his office, quickly shaved, straightened his hair, and smoothed his uniform as best he could. Giving Whitcher his itinerary, he left the Security Office, setting out for the Med Lab where he planned to meet Abby so they could go to dinner together.

A few centons later, he entered the Med Lab and was immediately approached by Lorna, the chief clerk. "Chief Urdea," she said, "we just left a message for you in your office. They brought Colonel Charybdis in a little while ago. He was involved in an accident, or, at least, we think it was an accident...."

Abby returned to medlab to check on Amy. A short time later she left the room, but walked past the smoking area, her fumerettes tucked deeply into her purse. She found a seat in the regular waiting area, and sat there looking forward to Urdea's arrival. When she saw him enter she stood up, but didn't approach as Urdea was immediately approached by someone else. More security business, Abby supposed....

Urdea smiled on noticing Abby, but he didn't get to speak with her because Lorna immediately launched into the details of the Colonel's accident, with rather a lot, Urdea suspected, of embellishments. After the rather talkative clerk had concluded her tale, Urdea asked a couple of pointed questions. Her hesitant answers allowed him to verify his guess that everything she'd just told him had been heard second or even third hand, and that he'd have to do some more investigating to get the real story. He thanked her for her "information," then keyed his portable comm unit to call the Security Office to ask for help. He also asked for the officer who had taken over at the watch desk from Whitcher to contact Major Lucian to request the assistance of an engineer who could help evaluate the accident scene, if there wasn't one already there. With assurances that all was under control, Urdea looked around again for Abby, but found she'd already left, so he left a message with Lorna to tell Ms. Abby that he would contact with her again shortly. Then, he was on his way....

Abby was in the hall when Urdea walked out of medlab. Her face brightened at the sight of him.
"There you are, handsome Major" she said, smiling. She walked up to him, wanting to slip an arm in his. But she didn't, afraid of what people might think. She knew the choices on a battlestar were limited, but she wanted to pretend anyway when she asked, "So, where are you taking me for dinner?"

It was all he could do to resist the urge to kiss her when she surprised him as he exited the Med Lab, particularly when he realized that her breath wasn't as smoky as earlier, but decorum due to a still-open investigation demanded it. Now, with what he'd just learned, he wondered....
"Abby," he said with a smile, "I thought I'd missed you so I just left a message for you inside. Unfortunately, I think I have some bad news. There's been, ah, a little accident that's going to require my presence for a little while. I'm not sure how long this is going to take since the story I got was, I believe, more story than fact"
"That's not so bad," Abby replied as Urdea paused for a moment. "We can eat after you're done."
"Oh, that's just the inconvenience," he said as the smile faded. "The bad news is that the accident involves Colonel Charybdis. Our meeting with him to resolve the case of Elmer's death is going to have to be postponed...again. And the really bad news is that until that case is resolved, we're going to have to continue to, ah--" he struggled for the right wording, then finally, as his face reddened, gave in to the sophomoric expression he'd tried to skip, "--avoid any public displays of affection--no matter how much I wish otherwise."

"That's okay" Abby said, though she didn't try to hide the disappointment of their date being cancelled. She was beginning to understand what being a Major in security was all about. She briefly wondered if she'd be able to stand such a life, putting up with constant interruptions and cancellations.
"You go do what you have to" Abby continued. "Don't worry about me. It was just a quick meal in the mess hall anyway, right?" She smiled, not caring if it looked convincing or not. Suddenly those buried fumerettes sounded pretty good to her again. She found her appetite had left just as quickly....

"Abby, we still have the appointment with Commander Sheba tomorrow about Elmer's case, even if the Colonel can't attend. Hopefully, all of that will be resolved then, and we can move on with our lives. Why don't you come with me since this involves the 'chief suspect' in the case?" He paused for a moment, then said, almost in a whisper, "Hopefully, this will be a simple accident, won't have anything to do with the other case, and won't take too long. If so, I'll be able to assign it to an officer to finish the paperwork and we'll be able to cut out and still get something to eat."
She looked at him, about to say something, but he, while hoping she was about to say yes, knew that he had to be completely honest with her. He added, "I have to warn you, though, if there's anything suspicious about it, this might take all evening, and you'll be even more disappointed in me than you are now." Looking directly into her eyes, he concluded, "I'd love for you to take the chance with me that it won't...and that you won't be."

Abby's reply was cut off by the beeping of her com. She looked at it with irritation, then opened the message with a sigh. A moment later she closed the com, and looked at Urdea with regret.
"I have to go" she said, a look of hopelessness in her eyes. "The agroship needs me" she added, realizing that her own needs would have to be set aside. The thought disturbed her. She was beginning to see a pattern forming that she wasn't sure she could ever get used to, at least as long as she held Elmer's position as head farmer. She was surprised that she'd had as much time to herself as she did before the farmers caught up to her.
"We don't seem to be able to get on the same page" she said, holding Urdea's hands in hers. "You get called, I get called..." she shrugged. "I'll call you when I can. Maybe we can try again." She tipped up and gave him a discreet peck on the cheek. She ran a hand along side his face, then turned away.
As she walked she reached into her purse, digging for the fumerettes. Almost out, she thought, but I'm sure I'll have a chance for one before the shuttle leaves...

Frustration! Sometimes in came in droves!
Abby was gone. Urdea was intensely frustrated that he hadn't been able to discuss their future, no, make that possible future, possibly together. He hadn't even been able to tell her about his discussion with the Commander Apollo and the Lieutenant Colonel. And then there was the new investigation, and its complications, coming right on the heels of the investigation that was about to have been completed...
* * *
Personal log, Urdea, Major, Fleet Security, Battlestar Callisto
...and he is without a doubt the most infurating individual with whom I've had the displeasure of working for an extended period in all my yahrens in the service. He is totally bigoted with respect to the Warrior Corps, as evidenced by his past run-ins with Captain Cain, Captain Amy, and the late Lieutenant Resonat, and his on-going feud toward Colonel Charybdis. He seems to have the tendency to get his teeth into something, latch on like a vice, and then with unflinching and impeturbable resolve, doggedly chew right through the issue, right or wrong, even when it's his own right arm. Unfortunately, he has something of a following among Fleet Security, and my recent, prolonged absence, has seemingly once-again strengthened his hand even beyond my wildest thoughts. Based on what I saw tonight, it may take sectars to smooth over, much less heal, the rifts he has broken open in the service once more....
* * *
When Urdea arrived, alone, at the location where the Colonel's accident had occurred, he was immediately met by Lieutenant Wheran, members of his squad, and a number of other Fleet Security officers from other squads who had come to "help." Moments after his arrival, Urdea was convinced that some of the "helpers" were not actually there to help with the investigation....
"And this," said Wheran, "is where the Colonel staged his 'accident' and started faking his 'amnesia.' We think he must have heard that he was going to be arrested in the morning, so he decided to try to avoid justice--"
"Yeah, avoid justice," said several of the other officers gathered around Wheran.
"--by pretending that he doesn't remember what happened. Give me a fracking break! We can't let him keep on getting away with the murder of Chief Farmer Elmer by just pretending he can't remember what happened. I'm telling you, the Colonel's a rotten egg, and we've got to break him before he walks away scot free while snickering under his breath all the way back to the Bridge!"
A chorus of "yeahs!" and related expressions from at least half of the collected group caused Urdea's eyes to widen slightly. Before he could say anything, Wheran leaned closer to him, looking him right in the eyes, and asked, "Now, just what are you going to do about it...Major?"
