As I walked up to Brie's door, I heard the weirdest commotion going on. "I found a foreign device attached to my NavCom and some pin holes in the fuel flow mixture fan blades!" she yelled , "I'm going to fix those engines myself if no one will help me!" It was a young Ensign yelling at a closed door.
The young ensign marched off in a huff in the opposite direction. I got to Brie's door, then straightening my jacket for the tenth time. I placed the rose behind my back and knocked three times. The date had started.

There was another knock on the door. “Good,” Brie said. “You’d had better learn to mind your temper,” she started as she opened the door. “Otherwise...oh, JustinB.” Brie was obviously surprised. She smiled, the confrontation already behind her. Wow, he looked fantastic! “Sorry, I was having a problem with one of my new recruits. Please, come in.” She opened the door and immediately glanced at Amy’s mess all over the floor. Amy wasn’t anywhere to be seen, she must have slipped into the bedroom. “Amy’s here,” Brie explained. “She’s just out of sick bay and her quarters aren’t ready because of a crawlon infestation, so she’s going to be staying with me for a while. To be honest, she’s been having a great time seeing how nervous I am.” She smiled again. She hadn’t meant to mention that she was nervous, she was making a fool of herself already.

"Major Brie of Gold Squadron nervous, I don't believe it for a micron," was my witty reply. I presented her the rose from behind my back. "Brie, this rare Caprican rose is for you." I hope she liked it as I held it out for her to take.

Brie was impressed. The flower itself was impressive enough, its delicate beauty a stark contrast to the cold, metallic reality in which they lived. More impressive, though, were the lengths that JustinB must have gone to to bring it to her. The thought that had gone into the gift, finding something extremely rare to let her know that she was important to him...Brie took the rose from him. Even though its sweet fragrance was already filling the room she couldn't resist smelling it up close. "Thank you," she said sincerely. "I've never seen one before, not even before the Holocaust. It's incredible." She studied the flower for another micron before placing it in a glass of water that Amy had conveniently left on her desk. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed something, one of her pictures that hadn't been put away. Turner's image was smiling up at her as if he was trying to tell her that it was time. In that moment, something inside of Brie stirred, a realization that she could, finally, move forward. She had no idea how the evening would turn out but she was willing to give it a chance. No more excuses, it was time to live again. She could already picture the flower carefully dried and preserved and locked away in her safe with the other possessions that she held closest to her heart. "A drinking glass doesn't quite do it justice. I can't tell you how much that means to me, they were rare even on Caprica." She paused, and slightly adjusted her wrap. "Let me just tell Amy that we're leaving and then I'm ready to go."

As I waited,I hoped that the view we had during dinner would be one to remember. I wondered how the night would go and that everything would go smoothly.
Seeing Brie's delight at receiving the rose made all feelings of nervousness go away. Looking at the mess, you thought a child had been through here. Brie must have a heart of gold to share her quarters with someone and if tonight went according to plan, maybe I would have Brie's heart. I placed my hand in my pocket and felt the small box containing the bracelet for Brie. Was it to much for a first date? I didn't know. The only relationship I had was with Rose. I was just about to pull the box out to look at the bracelet when Brie walked out.

"Amy, we're going to be leaving in a centon," Brie said as she entered her bedroom. She couldn't wipe the grin off her face. "I am so glad that you didn't let me cancel, I have a feeling that this is going to be a really special evening."
"How does he look?" Amy wanted to know.
Brie's smile grew even bigger. "Fantastic. Why don't you come out and say hello? You can see for yourself. And take a look on the desk, he brought me an incredible present." Brie opened the door again and walked back into the office. Amy was right behind her. JustinB immediately pulled his hand out of his pocket.
"Nice to see you, Major," Amy said.
"You too, Captain," JustinB replied. "I'm glad you're feeling better."
"Thank you."
"Oh, Amy, I need you to do me a favor," Brie said. "Could you check and see when the repair crews are supposed to start working on the viper assigned to Ensign Shannon? You know how these new recruits are, think they should be at the front of the line. I wonder how we've managed to defend ourselves from the Cylons all these yahrens without them."
"I'll take care of it," Amy promised. "You two had better get going, you don't want to miss your shuttle." They walked towards the door and Brie opened it. "Don't stay out too late," Amy teased. "Don't forget to say 'please' and 'thank you.' And look both ways..."
"...before crossing the street," Brie finished. "Thanks, Mom," she said with a wink. It was a private joke that wouldn't be private much longer. The door closed behind them, and they started towards the shuttle. The hallways weren't crowded, much to Brie's relief, and in civilian clothes no one seemed to notice her. That suited her fine. As excited as she was about the thought of actually having a personal life, she wanted to keep it private as long as possible.

As we walked towards the beta launch bay things we kinda quiet, so I decided to initiate conversation.
"Brie, I just want you to know that you look absolutely amazing tonight." This caused Brie to go a little red. Nervously I continued.
"Look I know that even though we are from different squadrons but I have always admired your leadership. I am happy we could put that aside and see each other for who we really are and am honoured to be taking you out to dinner." Man this was nerve racking, I thought.

"It's long overdue," Brie said. "I've spent too much time making up excuses for reasons why we shouldn't be having this dinner. I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I even peeked in your file, looking for some sort of excuse to get out of tonight. An excuse that of course I knew wouldn't be there. I feel very vulnerable right now and I'm not used to that. But I've done a lot of soul searching lately and decided that it's time to be honest with myself. There is nowhere that I would rather be right now than with you." She felt her face heating up slightly, she knew that she was blushing again. "And you look absolutely amazing yourself."

I was full of confidence after hearing Brie's compliment. We were nearly at beta launch bay when I heard the familiar voices of Kris and Missygoat. They sounded as if they were just around the corner when I heard a door open and the voices fade away. As soon as we entered the launch bay we saw the civilian shuttle being prepared for launch.
I turned to Brie as we approached the shuttle and said, "I was extremely fortunate to get this shuttle. I was able to find a shuttle that came to the Callisto to drop off new recruits for the academy and book us passage. With our status as CO's I believed discretion was the best part of valor."
"You don't know how glad I was to hear hat JustinB" Brie replied with a smile, "the last thing I wanted was our date to be broadcast over the fleet network."
I held Brie's hand while we walked up the ramp. At first she was a little tense then relaxed as we neared the hatch. The shuttle was empty so we took the most comfortable seats. Five centons later we were launched on our way to the Starliner Alpha

Brie felt a lot more relaxed once they were on the shuttle. On the Callisto there were too many people that she didn't want to see, but now she felt more comfortable. After takeoff she took JustinB's hand again. It felt so right in hers! "Funny how the view is so different than from a viper," she remarked. She was happy. The only thing that still worried her was how JustinB would react when he found out that Amy was her daughter. She intended to tell him, as soon as she found the right moment. This wasn't yet it.
