Personal log, Major Lucian, Engineering, Battlestar Callisto
Second day of the jump, second shift, sometime after dinner
Lords! I hate military inquisitors with a passion! Those intelligence jerks always seem to know better than you what you should have done and when you should have done it even though they weren’t there or anywhere else near real danger, didn’t know the real circumstances no matter how hard you try to explain them, and probably couldn’t have told their…well, I guess they might have that much sense, but I really think it would be questionable.
Two of those guys grilled me for over two and half centars on what happened in that landing bay. I think I must have told the exact same story at least twenty times, but they kept trying to dig deeper, until they finally gave up. We took a short break and I started to breathe a little easier, but then that pompous ass Flynt came in and we started all over again, and he, though he covered all the stuff the first group had covered, he really didn’t even focus on the same things as they did. He wanted to know all about the captured Cylon, how we took him, and why I shot him. I swear, he gave me such a hard time about it, if I EVER capture another tin-head, I’ll be tempted to shoot it dead right there rather than facing several centars facing off with Chief Inquisitor Lieutenant Colonel Flynt. Well, I thought taking that Cylon was a smart intelligence move, but Flynt didn’t seem to think so. I finally decided that he was playing devil’s advocate, giving me a hard time, so I told him so. Flynt smiled at me, an evil little grin really, and told me he didn’t give a crap what I thought, this was his domain, not mine, he had the authority there, not me, and that he’d believe anything he damn well wanted to believe, whether I liked it or not. Rather than argue with him, I just nodded and told him he was right. That seemed to take him aback, a little anyway, and he changed direction a bit so we finally covered some ground that we hadn’t covered already. He was nodding, nudging, pushing me forward like a good questioner should, pulling tidbits out of the recesses of my memory that I’d totally forgotten. A while later, he was finally done, so he stood up to go. I did, too, but he told me to sit back down. Two new inquisitors, one man and one woman, came in then, and started down the same road that Flynt had just covered! I was really ticked, was hungry, and really needed to go to the head since it had been nearly four centars since the break. Fortunately, that session only lasted about fifteen centons when they said I could go, “For now.” Lords, I’m hoping it’s for “For good!” As I was leaving, they didn’t even thank me, and I was so ticked I didn’t bother telling them goodbye, either.
…I stopped by the MedLab, and briefly spoke with Captain Lazant. He seems to be in relatively better spirits, but considering how low he was on the way back to the Callisto, that may not be saying much. Surprisingly, he even seemed glad to "see" me, though I swear I don’t think he’s ever liked me. Doc BKJ told me that they’ve done a few grafts, but that it would be several sectons and maybe even sectars before they’ll have him completely patched up. They don't know what's going to happen with his eyes....
A little later, I had dinner in the mess with some of my engineering guys and girls. We were about finished with dinner when I received a message from Commander Sheba to report to the Bridge. I literally gulped down the last few bites and I ran, hoping nothing was wrong. A couple of young engineers were right behind me. It must have been quite a scene when we arrived, bursting in. Commander Sheba smiled, waved them off, and had me join her in her Ready Room. She told me that we’d received the latest approved promotions list from the Galactica just before the jump, and that there were a few promotions in the Engineering and Technology Department. A couple of the guys had passed their engineering exam to become full engineers, one engineer had been promoted to command Lieutenant, and then there was the big one! Captain Fallel! I’d been pushing for his promotion for over a yahren, but there had been questions about his training, on his leadership ability, on his judgment, and even on his loyalty, so I’d submitted a lot of paperwork and statements from people on the Callisto to support the application. Major Jorlan even wrote a decent recommendation even though he can’t stand Fallel because Fallel was an Outlander. Fallel had made a few mistakes along the way, but he’d also made huge contributions, too, and he’s been a right hand to me, particularly on some of the recent missions, as well as with the everyday engineering operations. He’s easily the smartest guy I know, other than perhaps Solon (and not nearly as crotchety) and maybe Dr. CureMode, though that one’s probably a tossup. His photographic memory helps, but that he can apply what he reads and judge how to do it correctly, most of the time anyway, is a huge benefit. I’m very proud and very happy for him, particularly since now he’ll have the rank to actually do a lot of the stuff I have him do. Yes, this is very good news! I think I’m going to find him now and drag him down to the O-Club for a drink….
