Although every inclination in her was telling her to burst into the operating room and stop Ellis, Doc Bkj knew better. Making a surgeon jump with a laser scalpel in his hand was generally not a good idea. Instead, she stood with the two blackshirts in the small sterile room right outside of the O.R. and flashed the small light that was over the door, a signal that the staff knew meant someone had scrubbed and wanted to enter. She would wait until the door was opened from the inside, which didn’t take long.
“Ah, Doctor Bkj,” Doctor Ellis said through his mask. “You’re just in time to see me close. Wanted to see the master at work? Although I don’t understand why you brought your...friends.”
“Please step away from Major Brie,” Bkj said calmly. “I’ll close.”
“I don’t understand,” Ellis replied, continuing to work.
“You’re under arrest, Doctor Ellis,” Enoch said.
“Arrest?” Ellis repeated. “That’s ridiculous. What’s the charge?”
“The attempted murder of Major Brie,” Enoch told him.
“Murder? I saved her life!”
“I ran some independent tests on Brie’s blood,” Bkj explained. “Her heart attack was induced. And someone removed her verticillin allergy from her chart. Most people don’t have enough security clearance to be able to do that.”
Doctor Ellis started to laugh. “So the Widow is allergic to this?” He held up a large, full syringe.
Both Enoch and Jared pulled out their lasers, which Doc Bkj assumed were NOT sterile. “Drop it, Doc,” Jared said.
“Oh, gladly.” Ellis plunged the needle into Brie’s leg. Jared shot him in the arm, but Ellis didn’t even seem to notice as he emptied the syringe’s contents. Enoch also shot, aiming directly at Ellis’ heart. He fell to the floor, dead.
Doc Bkj rushed to Brie’s side. She pulled out the antidote. Glancing at the empty syringe, she made an educated guess as to how much to give Brie. Too much would cause almost as much damage as the verticillin. And she had no idea as to the strength of the dosage that he had injected. She said a prayer as she administered the antidote.
