"Commander, I came immediately," I said.
"Sit down, Charybdis." He motioned toward a chair near him. I slipped into the chair quickly.
"What's this I hear about you on the Medical Frigate? Sheba notified me."
"Well, sir, I decided to take leave from the military for awhile. Commander Sheba okayed the plan."
"Yes, I heard. Although I'm not too thrilled with this. You belong on the bridge with Sheba. We need every officer where they can be utilized against the Cylons."
"Yes, sir," I replied, almost sorry about what I had done. Apollo saw this.
"Charybdis, I know that all of this has been hard on you. It hasn't been easy for anyone. This whole fracking Pierce thing, it should never have gotten this far. I truly am sorry that you got caught up with what happened to Major Brie, but it was the only way." He seemed to be looking for validation, far be it from me to be the one.
"Well, sir, we have to do what is required, sometimes even if it means going against everything we are feeling, " I replied.
He gave sort of a half-laugh. "Even giving up friends? I know that you and Major Brie go way back, but we had to make sure that she was convicted in that trial. Your testimony seemed to seal the deal. I thank you for going along with our secret plan and making it seem as if Brie was responsible, given your situation. Sheba told me how she brought you in during the trial to make sure Brie was convicted"
I really didn't want thanks for that. "Well, Commander, Brie probably hates me by now. But, if it was for the best of the fleet, then I guess we have to make sacrifices. Yes, even giving up friends if needed." I thought about Brie for a micron. She would never know that I had been a small part of the plan. When Sheba approached me with this, I hesitated, but seeing as to how I was being called to testify, we couldn't avoid it. Sheba had not even told Commander Apollo about me being in on it since we were on the moon mission. And I had asked Sheba not to tell anyone about my involvement.
I had lost a lot of credibility with my testimony, but again, I did it for the good of the fleet and for Brie. Only problem was that no one but Apollo and Sheba really knew.
Apollo put his hand on my shoulder, "You're a good man, Charybdis. I wish we had more like you. I"m sorry that your part in all of this will never be known and that you have to live with this in silence from now on. But maybe some day, you and Brie can make nice?"
"Perhaps, Commander." I thought about that, then quickly changed the subject, I pretty much knew Brie would never forgive me for what had happened. She had too much pride in her. No, some things can never go back to the way they were.
"Oh, I also forgot." Apollo added. "You can stay for a couple of cycles here onboard the Galactica, but when you head back to the Callisto to resume your duties, I have a favor to ask of you. We have an Ensign who has finished her training here onboard the Galactica academy, but she needs more specialized training that only the Callisto academy has. I need you to escort her back to the Callisto with you and when she finishes, she can be assigned to one of your squadrons. And as a gift, I am sending you in two vipers that you can keep. I seem to remember your viper that you lost in that mishap a couple of yahrens ago."
Two new vipers to keep and one for me? Wow! "Thank you, Commander. You're too kind. And I will see that the new ensign transfers and finishes her training."
"Great. Well, that's all for now, get some rest and some food and let me know when you'll be leaving," Apollo said.
"Yes, sir. Oh by the way, Commander, who is this Ensign?"
Apollo led me to the door, as it opened, he replied, "You can find her over in the pilot's quarters. Her name is Ensign Annie..."
