"Wait," Brie started, but it was too late. The scene changed in front of them. They were on the bridge of the Agro Ship. Kyla was standing on the side, Logan was at the controls. Millie and Tanya were in the back. Captain Suttir and Dorn were both seated, looking extremely nervous. As Pierce spoke he waved his laser in the air like a toy.
“Were you going to say something before?” Amy asked.
Brie was lost in watching the events from the Agro Ship unfold in front of her. “Huh? Oh, there was this strange, cold chill. I was wondering if you felt it. It’s not important.”
“No, I didn’t feel anything,” Amy replied.
Brie shook her head. “I thought I was going to die,” she said quietly. “I was sure of it. This is right after Pierce had sent Chip to bring back one of the hostages. He never came back, I’m not sure what happened to him. So I volunteered to be the first one killed.”
“That was brave,” Amy commented.
“It seemed like the only thing to do,” Brie replied. “I knew that Logan was working on my side, although she didn’t know that I knew. And I could tell that there was still good in Kyla. She thought that Pierce loved her, but the daggit didn’t even know her name. I used that to my advantage."
"Who's that standing in the background?" Amy asked. "Dressed in white?"
Brie smiled. "That's Turner. His presence was so reassuring, although it added to my thinking that this really was the end. He had only appeared to me in dreams before, but suddenly I could see him, as clearly as we're here right now."
"But we're not here right now," Amy reminded her. "We're back on the Callisto, in the sick bay, remember?"
"A small technicality," Brie replied. "Oh look, Pierce has just made contact with the Galactica." She continued to watch.
“We have our first victim, Apollo,” Pierce said. “If you don’t agree to give me control of the fleet, you’ll get to watch Brie die.”
“I’m not your ‘victim,’ Pierce,” Brie said.
Pierce laughed. “Oh you’re so brave, Brie. Come on, admit it. You’re a little bit scared.” He pressed his laser against Brie’s temple.
“I’m not afraid of you, Pierce,” Brie said defiantly, “and I’m not afraid to die. What DOES scare me is what would happen to the human race if you were in charge.”
“You should be afraid of me,” Pierce said, stepping away. “Think of what I’ve done to ruin your life. I arranged Turner’s execution and made sure that it was carried out. I wouldn’t let anyone believe you when you kept trying to tell them that he hadn’t been killed by the Cylons. I made sure that you were committed. I made it very difficult for you to be reinstated. I took your final mission, what should have been your crowning achievement, and turned it around to make it look like you were negligent. I had you arrested, tried and convicted. You had just returned from a suicide mission with most of your team alive, and I had you court-martialed! A career as brilliant as yours, but they listened to me instead. It’s fitting that your life should end now, by my hands.” He stopped for a moment, lost in his own thoughts. He seemed to have forgotten about the Galactica and the Callisto. “There is one way that you can save your life, Brie,” he said.
“I already told you, I’m not taking the seal with you,” Brie said matter-of-factly.
“He wanted you to take the seal?” Amy asked. “Ewww!”
“Yeah, it was a pretty disgusting thought,” Brie replied. “A sealing made in Hades. But that wasn't his plan this time around.”
“No, it’s much simpler than that,” Pierce replied. “Call me ‘Master.’”
Brie shook her head. “Never in a million yahrens.”
Pierce took several more steps away from Brie. He was now standing next to Kyla. Millie and Tanya were way in the back, and Logan was seated at the ship’s controls, directly behind Brie. “You see this laser?” Pierce asked, holding it up a bit. “It was specially designed for me. It has the normal settings and stun, but what’s special about it is this little button right here.” He made an obvious move to press it. “The blast isn’t strong enough to kill you, but it is made to cause intense pain.” He shot immediately, reopening the wound on Brie’s right arm. “Call me ‘Master.’”
A tremendous burning sensation tore through Brie’s arm. “Is that the best you’ve got? Trula’s hit hurt worse than that.”
"Trula?" Amy repeated. "Isn't she the Galactica's head chef?"
Brie nodded. “She tried to kill me, and also admitted to her role in Turner’s murder. She’s been following Pierce for yahrens.”
“Makes me kind of wonder about her bovine stew,” Amy joked.
“See,” Brie exclaimed quickly. “There’s another advantage to becoming a vegetarian.”
“Oh, you want more?” Pierce fired again, this time hitting Brie’s left thigh. “Call me ‘Master.’”
“No,” Brie said simply.
Pierce shot a third time, grazing Brie’s right elbow and continuing into her side. Blood was everywhere, and the pain was incredible. “Call me ‘Master.’ Get down on your knees and worship me.”
“You can keep this up all cycle,” Brie said, trying to hide how much she was hurting. “The only thing I will call you is what you are, and that’s a madman.”
“Master,” Kyla said sheepishly, “I know it’s intended for torture, but if you keep this up it will kill her. The loss of blood...”
“Very well, Kari, my pet,” Pierce said to Kyla. “I’ll do what you ask.” Pierce adjusted his laser, then pointed it straight at Brie. “I hope you’re ready, because the time has come for you to die.”
“Wait a centon,” Brie said calmly as Pierce aimed directly at her with his laser. “Don’t I get one last look around? It’s bad enough that the final thing that I’ll see before I die is your ugly face.”
Pierce glared at her. “All right. Look around, but make it quick. I do want everyone to know that I’m a compassionate man, willing to grant a dying request.”
Brie stifled a laugh. “Yeah, right,” she mumbled. She turned so her back was towards Pierce, and looked directly at Logan for the first time. She mouthed a few words to her, turned again, stared at Millie and Tanya, then faced Pierce once more.
“What did you say to Logan?” Amy wanted to know.
“I wanted to make sure she let him do it,” Brie replied. “Allowing Pierce to kill me was the only way I could think of to buy the people of the Agro Ship a few more centons. That’s probably why it hurt so badly when they turned on me.”
“They never were the brightest group,” Amy remarked.
“How about last words?” Brie wanted to know. “Or am I asking to much?”
Pierce sighed. “Since I’m ridding the fleet of your increasingly grating voice, go ahead.”
“There are two things that I want to say,” Brie started. “First, Commander Apollo, thank you for the privilege of allowing me to serve for all these yahrens. You’re a great leader and a great man, just like your father. Second, I ask the Lords of Kobol to have mercy on the human race. A few evil individuals like Pierce don’t reflect the species as a whole.” She paused. “Okay, Major, show everyone just how deranged you’ve become. Do it now.”
“With pleasure.”
As Pierce aimed directly at Brie’s heart Kyla started to cough a loud, painful sounding cough. “Sorry, Master,” she said, trying to catch her breath.
“Are you okay, Kyla?” Brie asked. Kyla nodded, obviously embarrassed.
Pierce grinned as he aimed once again. “Shows how much you know. Her name is Kari.”
“See,” Brie interrupted. “That was part of my brilliant scheme. Kyla thought that Pierce loved her, would someday take the seal with her. To prove how wrong she was, I referred to her as ‘Kari’ instead of ‘Kyla,’ and Pierce went along with it. It helped open Kyla’s eyes.”
Time slowed down as Pierce was about to fire. Brie focused on Turner, standing quietly behind Pierce. She knew that no one else could see him, that he wasn’t really there, but she felt his presence nonetheless. The only sound she could hear was the familiar ‘click’ of a laser about to fire.
“My name is Kyla!” the young med tech screamed as time sped up again. Lightning fast, she kicked the laser out of Pierce’s hand. It still fired, causing a flurry of sparks on the control board. The connection with the Galactica and the Callisto was immediately broken. Kyla then turned, laser in hand, and fired at both Millie and Tanya. They dropped to the floor. She then pointed at Logan.
“No!” Brie shrieked. “She’s on our side!”
“Are you sure?” Kyla asked.
“Gold Squadron doesn’t have any rotten apples,” Brie said plainly. “Besides, she’s a friend of Skyler’s so yeah, I’m sure.” Brie went over and checked on the two fallen blackshirts. They were both alive.
“I set for stun,” Kyla explained. “There’s been enough death already.”
“Good work,” Brie said. “You ARE your father’s daughter.” She looked around, slightly saddened that Turner was gone. Someone else was also missing. “Um, where’s Pierce?”
“So where was Pierce?” Amy asked.
“He had slipped out the back door,” Brie replied. “Logan, Kyla and I went looking for him, which is when we ran into your friends.”
“Were you going to say something before?” Amy asked.
Brie was lost in watching the events from the Agro Ship unfold in front of her. “Huh? Oh, there was this strange, cold chill. I was wondering if you felt it. It’s not important.”
