After, being shown my new quarters among the gold squadron, I stowed the belongings I had with me. I began reflecting on that fatal day, when the Cylons started attacking Piscon, and all the other colonies. When the attacks came, my parents were tragically killed barely microns after the first wave of attacks on Nereus. Even after all these yahrens surviving among the fleets, I have not been able trace any family or relatives of mine that might have escaped and perhaps were living somewhere in the fleets. Of course, I was only five yahrens old when I escaped, and may not even recognize my family anymore.
As I hung up my civilian clothes generously bestowed upon me from my adopted mother, Siress Europa, I felt the soft texture of them against the back of my hand, pondering how glad I was to be here, on the Callisto, beginning a new life, and do something to contribute to the greater goal of serving, protecting, and preserving our human race.
I closed my locker door, and walked over to my bunk, "This may take some getting used to, after living in the fortunate luxuries of the my suite aboard the Rising Star ", I thought to myself. But, nevertheless, I was excited about training as a flight cadet. Images of myself flying in a viper ran through my head, with Cylon raiders coming at me, and me blasting them out of the sky.....oh my lords, had I bitten off more than I could chew?, I wondered.... Suddenly someone's voice cut through my thoughts, and my temporary doubts were flung out of my mind. It was time for me to report to cadet training in the simulator room. My first day at learning the ropes of how to fly a viper. Lieutenant Flell was standing at the head of the room when I arrived with the other cadets. The Lieutenant seemed a little intimidating, but this was indeed a serious training to impart upon his new recruits, so I took a deep breadth and told myself that he too probably felt nervous on his first day. "Would it help if I pictured the Captain naked"?I thought to myself...."Naaah...that might cause a reversed effect, rather than it helping me to relax...I mused, almost amused at my own mind chatter.
Lieutenant Flell ordered us to take our positions, in a viper simulator each, and after a brief talk and some instruction about vipers and the simulators, we were to begin our first set of manoeuvres given to follow, on the monitors. At first I felt like Cetus floundering about helplessly in shallow waters, as a few mumbles of "Frack" were heard under people's breadth, throughout the room, it seemed my fellow cadets were obviously struggling to even out their vipers on the simulators...Thank the gods, I wasn't alone in that, I smiled discreetly, as I began to enjoy the simulations and their challenge.
Ten millicentons had passed, when Lieutenant Flell suddenly approached my simulator, to assess my progress, and just as I was finally getting the hang of the controls, I overshot my position, heading straight toward my simulated wingman, and slamming into the side of him .
The lieutenant evidently saw my worst moment and criticized my poor handling in controlling my viper properly, and insisted I go back two frames of manoeuvres and begin again from there, until I repeat trying to kick in thrusts with any wingmen near my ship.
"Felgercarb"! I thought,"If only he hadn't come to assess me at that crucial moment, I would have passed that frame easily.. while holding a perfect pyramid."
I had to work on loosening up my nerves, so as to not allow the lieutenant to jangle them, when I'm actually doing well at something. Oh the perils of being an ensign. "When was it time for snack period?", I pondered.........

Lt. Flell kept a close eye on the new cadets and their progress. He was in charge, but only until Lazant could return. Lazant had a reputation for being hard-nosed and serious, and Flell, as his replacement, found that he could play that role better than he had expected. The fleet was depending on these cadets for the human race to survive, he wasn’t there to be their friend.

At last, 1100 centares beckoned the snack period. The class was given 15 centons to grab a snack at the Callisto cafe, before the next session began. Before approaching the door, on my way out of the simulator room, Lieutenant Flell complimented me on my great improvement on my formation manoeuvres on the scanner simulations, since the beginning of this morning's lesson.
I was stunned at his unexpected generous words, compared to his prior criticism, more than once in one morning. "Uh.. Thank you Sir", I replied, not sure whether to smile or not. His face was still very serious, but just a hint of an approachable quality was in his eyes. So I smiled, before continuing out of the room to the Callisto cafe with the rest of my fellow cadets.
"I think it must be an honour to be singled out like that, on your first day, by the Lieutenant", said a voice suddenly beside me . I turned to see who it was. "My name is Triton. I'm two rows behind from where you are, in the simulator room", said an incredibly handsome fellow- cadet, with a friendly smile, although he was must be some yahrens older than me.
"Why didn't I notice him..",I asked myself in my mind, while trying not to reveal what I was thinking..."(what beautiful blue-green eyes....soft brown hair, shining like a chestnut in that magic moment when it first splits open ...and shoulders as broad as a...). I reminded myself I had to reply him, before he thought I was either deaf, dumb or maybe just lacking poorly in etiquette. "Er, thank you. It was indeed unexpected, since my nerves were all over the place when Lt. Flell first assessed me this morning. Nice to meet you Triton", I replied. "Oh, sorry...I'm Persephone",I added as we shook hands while walking through the corridors. "That's a lovely name. It means "goddess of spring", doesn't it?", Triton commented.
"Thank you, and yes that's right. You have a great name too. What colony were you from?". I said with a small hope he was from my home planet.
"I was from Virgon . Are you from Virgon too?". Triton's voice sounded hopeful. "I'm from Piscon", I informed him. As we approached the cafe door, Triton allowed me to step through first. A show of gentlemanly behaviour. I was already feeling I could get to like a guy like this.
Triton offered me to sit with him at a table. The cafe was filled with cadets and a few senior officers enjoying a few centons break between duty rosters. There was an unexplainable buzz in the room. I felt an air of normality and productivity as if the annihilation never happened so many yahrens ago. Perhaps I had found my purpose again in life, with a room full of new potential friends, that may well become like my new family.
Triton and I engaged in pleasant conversation, telling me about his triumphs and errors in the viper simulator, with such wit and humour, making me feel at ease, sharing our laughter at our first mistakes. Then a little about our former lives, and how we managed to escape death, and why we decided to enlist on the Callisto as flight cadets.
He was undeniably handsome, with a kind voice. I was the happiest today I had been in a long time. But I couldn't help but say,"You know you remind me of someone, Triton".
"Really, who"?, he queried me with curiosity in his eyes, which just made him look even more adorable. "Get a grip, Persephone! I've just meet the guy", I thought to myself.
"Well, I've been trying to remember who, all the while we've been chatting, and now I remember". Triton listened closer, as I spoke. "You remind me of Commander Apollo of the Galactica. You have such similar features, as though you were brothers. Though you are quite plainly a little younger by maybe ten, fifteen yahrens than the Commander".
Triton was not so surprised at my surmise.
"Well, ah, that's because Commander Apollo and I are cousins, on my late father's side".
"Oh..I had no idea who you really are, but now I know why the two of you have so much likeness". "I hope you won't mind, but may I ask who you're father was, Triton"?, I added quietly.
"No, I don't mind at all. It's been a long time now since my father, Sire Cadmus, perished on the Antlantia, along with my mother and the president and the rest of the members of the Quorum of Twelve. My father was the late Commander Adama's brother, and my mother was Siress Berenices who represented Virgon in the Quorum of Twelve, as mother was a Virgon and my father, Caprican".
"My mother was elected to the council after the death of her father, Sire Urion, who formerly represented Virgon in the Quorum".
"My parents always travelled together, and in the end, they died together". Triton looked a little solemn as he spoke of his parents memory. But he obviously loved them very much.
"I'm so sorry for your loss, Triton". "Thanks", he said smiling appreciatively at my genuine condolence.
A bell was rung to signal for us to return to class. Our conversation broke, as we made our way back to the class.
As we walked, Triton gave me a few extra tips how to relax more when in a cockpit of viper, as he had been keen to fly all his life, and used to communicate with Apollo in their young days, when he started out as new fighter pilot and used to share his experiences and tips with Triton. As we returned to the room, Triton smiled the most warmest smile at me, and said "I hope to catch up again with you after class, Persephone". "That would be great, Triton". I walked to my simulator blushing for sure, and seated myself once more, and with my new found tricks of the trade from my new friend, boy, did I kick Hades butt in that simulator this time!

-Continued from Lazarus- As Artus walked into the Callisto cafe, he heard a bell ring. Well, at least he wpuldn't have to suffer the indignity of falling prey to more of Flell's accusations. All the cadets would be heading back to the simulator room now. He did have to admit that Flell did have a point though. As a few of the young female cadets squeezed by him to get out of the room, he had to admit that they did look lovely. He might be totally devoted to Amy, but he still had eyes. They greeted him with a qucik "Lieutenant." and a head nod. Then they went back to their merry conversation completely mesmerized by the fact that they would soon be flying a viper. Artus sighed. They had seen the rank, and not the man he was. Seing his reflection in the panelon the side wall, he understood why. He looked like hadn't slept for the past seven yahrens, his hair was a mess and he could use a shave. He simply hadn't paid much attention to his personal grooming since all he had been doing was one simulator run after another just to get his flight liscence back. When he looked back into the room, Artus snapped to attention. Commander Apollo was approaching the door. Then Artus realised it wasn't actually Apollo, but somebody who looked incredibly like him. Another cadet, judging from the uniform. He left for the simulators together with a stunningly beautiful female cadet. She seemed too lost in the Apollo look-alike to notice Artus. Artus on the other hand thanked the gods for the tight fitting breeches of the Colonial uniform. The attendant at the counter finished up with the last customer and approached Artus. "Hello lieutenant, what can I get you." Not taking his eyes off the female cadet, Artus absentmindedly answered; "Hi. Ehm, can I get a burger with some Caprican ketchup?"

A Rising Star It was drawing to the end of the afternoon training lesson, and Persephone was completing simulator runs well ahead of her nearby cadets. Lieutenant Flell was so impressed with Persephone's skill, that he kept bumping up her level on the simulator, with tougher challenges, and tighter manoeuvres, and higher numbers of cylon raiders to combat with. "What do they put in those Hydronic Mushies, I ate at the Callisto cafe"? she wondered, as her energy level felt like she could easily do another two centares of sim. runs. Just then, the electronic buzzer rang to end the lesson. Lt. Flell took his position at the head of the room, and spoke a few closing words for the day's lesson, reminding us of some pointers as new warriors and soon to be real pilots. He added kind appraisals to some of the cadets doing exceedingly well, which included the names of Triton, and a few other male cadets, along with myself and a fellow female cadet, second simulator on the right, from mine . But always in that militaristic, disciplined way, did the Lieutenant applaud us, which I was still getting used to. I made my way toward the class door, as Triton joined me on our way out. "Looks like we survived our first day, after all", said Triton, as he flashed that smile of his at me. "Survived? Ahh, I don't know about you, but I kicked the Hades out of those cylon raiders in there", I replied with a raised eyebrow at Triton, that soon turned into a triumphant smile, as he and I burst into laughter. "Remind me to watch out for you, when you do start firing real lazors out there...", Triton added quickly to our jest. "But seriously, congratulations on your achievement in there, I told you could do it", he further said. "Thank you and congratulations yourself, but then I knew you'd be an ace warrior anyway. It's in your family genes." "And your helpful tips really helped me to relax in the simulator, and focus better on what I was there to do. How can I thank you"?, I said. "Thanks and no sweat", Triton smiled warmly, in acknowledgement to my words, then as we strolled down the corridors returning to our quarters, approaching Gold Squadron's female quarters, he glanced down at the floor for a few microns, and finally said, "If you don't have any plans for your meal period, I was wondering if...", he stopped as one of the young bridge officers came toward us, holding a message print-out in her hand. "Are you Ensign Triton", she asked as she looked directly at him, still wearing her communication head piece. "Yes, Officer Mira", he replied respectably. She handed him the message print-out, smiling , "This came for you from the Galactica. It's from Commander Apollo". "Oh, thank you", Triton accepted the message, and smiled in return to the officer, as she turned to return to the bridge of the Callisto. Triton took a few moments to glance over the content of the message, then looked back at me to say, "Er, could you excuse me for a centon, Persephone"? "Of course, that's perfectly alright. You go ahead and read your message from the Commander. I'll be in my quarters, if you need to find me", I say with an understanding nod. "Thanks Persephone, this will only take a centon, if you'd like to join me for a drink in the officer's mess, after I read this"? "That would be nice. I'll meet you there in about ten centons"? "Okay, great", replied Triton as he walked off to his quarters. As Persephone turned to head toward her quarters, a senior officer brushed so close to her shoulder as he was passing by in the corridor, they ended up bumping shoulders. "I'm so sorry, Lieutenant Artus, I should have looked where I was walking, forgive me". I say apologetically to the Lieutenant. He smiled politely, brushing down his hair, as though trying to smooth his ruffled appearance, which didn't seem to be working real well. And his 1700 centares shadow was near to being a full grown beard. "Er..Lieutenant, if you don't mind me saying so, but you seem to have a little Caprican ketchup, on the corner of your mouth...just there", I nervously say as I try to point to the spot of Caprican condiment on his face...

Feeling more like a zombie than anything else, Artus was heading back to the Gold Squadron men’s barracks. He had spent his time eating alone and staring at the wall. It seemed like only a few weeks ago that he would have laughed along with the other warriors, perhaps play a friendly game of Pyramid. But not now. Not with two yahrens lost and the situation between him and Amy seeming more hopeless than ever. It was as if the life had been sucked out of him.
Not really looking where he was going, he accidentally bumped shoulders with a young cadet. Apologeticaly she said to him:
“I'm so sorry, Lieutenant Artus, I should have looked where I was walking, forgive me”
Artus smiled politely, but found himself lost in the eyes of the young cadet. He loved Amy, but as Brie pointed out, she was going to be sealed to the Colonel and Artus would only get in the way. Absentmindedly he started brushing down his hair, looking for the right words.
She smiled again and said:
"Er..Lieutenant, if you don't mind me saying so, but you seem to have a little Caprican ketchup, on the corner of your mouth...just there"
Nervously she pointed it out to him.
Artus felt at the place she indicated. Caprican ketchup. How ironic. Staring at his fingers Artus almost wanted to believe that this was a sign from the Lords of Kobol, indicating that he should move on.
He then tried to find his posture again. Smiling his most charming half-smile, he adressed the young cadet.
“No need to apologise, “ he said; “in fact I should apologise to you. I wasn’t looking where I was going. In fact, I think the only way that I can properly apologise to you is if you allow me to take you out to dinner. I know I’m probably breaken dozens of regulations in asking you, but to Hades with the rules.”
Appreciatively he looked up and down the cadet’s body, admiring how everything was in the right place.
“But you do have me at a disadvantage there. You seem to know my name, but I don’t know yours. Cadet…?”
--- Somewhere beyond time and space, a demon started laughing. ---

Feeling surprised at the sudden dinner invitation from a man whom she had not formerly met, but had heard of his name and his recent misfortune with the loss of his pilot liscence, through some of the gossip in her quarters. She never condoned such unkind chatter about another person... but one can't help but hear what others might talk about. She quickly replied in answer to the Lieutenant's question, "Oh I'm.. Cadet Persephone. It's nice to meet you Lieutenant."
Persephone, smiled politely in return to the one Lt. Artus was giving her, though she felt an uneasiness from the liberal way he surveyed her figure. It was as clear as a Nubian Sun that he was thinking something beyond just the topic of an offer to dinner. She wasn't naive. Wanting to terminate the slightly awkward moment, and return to her quarters to freshen up before she met Triton at the Officer's Mess, Persephone put her hand up and fiddled with her uniform collar, as though to put a barrier in front of her chest, and bring the Lieutenant's gaze back to her face, instead of everywhere else on her anatomy. She cleared her throat subtly and added, with a pleasant tone " Really, Lieutenant I wouldn't wish to trouble you, just because we accidently over-shot our personal spaces in the corridor. It wasn't your fault...I guess we both had other things on our minds at the time of collision...". Persephone said with polite humour, as she gently shook her head, her long dark brown hair moving softly with her. Her emerald eyes careful, not to give out the wrong impression. Attempting to divert an uncomfortable couple of centons with a touch of jocosity, she hoped the remark would relieve her of standing any longer in the corridor talking with Artus.
He gave a chuckle, shifting his weight to his other foot, and gave a quick glance down at the floor and up again, still running his hand through his dishevelled hair, trying to connect his thoughts with her through his eyes. His smile broadened across his face revealing an attractive dimple in his right cheek. His soft laugh was like a fingerprint to Persephone, and for just a split micron, it revealed to her intune Pisconese perception, his experience as a warrior, and as a man. His seemed a character who could laugh at many a thing, as well as sport an ego as large as an orange giant star. He was obviously nursing some bruises to it.
But it was his roaming eye that was hard to escape notice, even though she was on one of the largest vessels in the fleet, she felt there was nowhere she could hide where he couldn't stare right through the walls and a uniform!
She felt sympathy for him though, thinking how difficult it must be for a man like him, to be reduced to simulator training all over again. As she looked at him for a further few microns, his rugged image was strangely attractive, but she felt nevertheless uncomfortable for thinking that. Her final thought of him was, that the Lieutenant probably had a good heart under his forward exterior. She believed every Colonial Warrior possessed an inner quality of noble courage and goodness. That's what she thought a Colonial Warrior stood for.
"If you'll excuse me, Lieutenant, I have to be somewhere." She looked down at her wrist to check the time on her watch and realised it was nearly time to meet Triton.
Triton. Now that was someone she felt comfortable with, she thought to herself. A little like Chiron, whom she would have been sealed to by now, and living happily, if he had not been taken away from her so suddenly. A thought of Chiron's eyes and his smile, his voice, and his warm touch flooded her memory and her senses for what was only a brief moment, but felt like millacentons locked in eternity. Why did it have to be him? Did he suffer a painful end? Was his spirit living on, somewhere, across time and space? Heaven? Perhaps he now watched over her, like an angel.
Persephone's face became a little distant, as she remembered her past. She brought herself back to the present moment, as the voice of her fellow bunkmate called out to her, as she approached Persephone and the lieutenant.
"Um..excuse me Lieutenant. Persephone, could I interrupt you for a micron", said the young cadet.
Thank the lords, Persephone thought.
"Ah..., yes, sure Misty", she responded with delight, as she turned slightly to face her bunkmate.
The Lieutenant's gaze was broken from Persephone, to face the other cadet. Out of the corner of Persephone's eye, she could tell he was just as impressed with Misty's well- fitted uniform. My Lords, he's going to short something out before his next Iris Cone Count, she further thought.
"Er..this is my fellow cadet, Ensign Misty Star, Lieutenant". Persephone introduced them.
Misty was quite obviously happy to meet a senior officer. I had a feeling she may like the rugged type.
"What was it you wanted to know, Misty?" Persephone inquired.
After finally peeling her eyes and a charmed smile of the Lieutenant, she replied, " Would you have one of those sample fragrons spare, I could borrow, something in the female range for a Sagittaran"?
"Yes, of course, Misty. I'll come and look through my fragron sample case right now, if you like".
Misty Star was still mesmerized by the senior officer.
"Would you excuse us, Lieutenant"? Persephone looked back at Artus.

"Oh I'm.. Cadet Persephone. It's nice to meet you Lieutenant."
Persephone smiled a lovely smile that almost, but not completely took Artus’ mind off Amy for a milicenton. Instinctively the young cadet seemed to move her hand to the rank inducation on her collar. It appeared as if she was realising wich rule of military conduct Artus was breaking and she seemed nervous because of it. Since he didn’t want to make her any more nervous about that then she already was, Artus decided to look straight at her face, away from the rank insignia she had tried to cover up. He knew there was no mistake about it. This girl was certainly interested in his advances and the thought of a possible court martial seemed to make her nervous, but it certainly exited her.
She then delicately cleared her throat, and in a husky femininie tone added: “Really, Lieutenant I wouldn't wish to trouble you, just because we accidently over-shot our personal spaces in the corridor. It wasn't your fault...I guess we both had other things on our minds at the time of collision..."
If there had been any doubt in Artus’mind before, that little innuendo at the end certainly took them away. To add to the effect, she gently shook her head, her long dark brown hair moving softly with her. Staring at him, the message in her emerald eyes was obvious to Artus. She wanted him, right here, right now.
Not used to woman being that forward, Artus gave a chuckle and glanced up and down her body once more. He then looked back into those deep emerald eyes while running his hand through his hair. He realised he hadn’t shaved in a while, but apparently this seemed to add to his natural attractiveness for some women. This one for instance, he realised and with that his smile broadened across his face.
Artus only realised he hadn’t said anything for a while when Persephone looked at her watch and said; “If you'll excuse me, Lieutenant, I have to be somewhere."
This made him smile despite himself. So she was going to try and play hard to get? As if she could actually fool a man of Artus’ experience. From her gaze and general composure he could simply see that she was only thinking of romance that very moment. Loosing herself in the moment her face became a little distant and Artus realised she was only waiting for him to kiss her at that point. Gently he leaned in towards her…
When suddenly they were interrupted by another cadet.
"Um..excuse me Lieutenant. Persephone, could I interrupt you for a micron", said the other young cadet, whom Artus did not know.
It was clear to Artus from the look on Persephone’s face that she wasn’t happy with the interruption. "Ah..., yes, sure Misty", was her response, and she even managed to sound almost delighted. But Artus knew better. Persephone turned slightly to face the other cadet, as if to not let her know about what was really going on here.
Deciding to play along Artus shifted his gaze from Persephone to the new arrival. But when he looked at her he found that he was shocked and amazed. He could swear that he had seen her before. But at the same time he was certain that it hadn’t been on board the Callisto. His eyes must have positively bulged out as he made the realisation that this young cadet might be connected to his dissapearance.
The two girls talked about fragron samples the way women do, but Artus welcomed the attention being drawn away from, so he could think the situation over. Perhaps he should try a different approach so he might be able to get a little more information about both these new cadets. But unlike most situations, his gift of gab seemed to fail him at this point, as Persephone turned her emerald eyes back on him and said: "Would you excuse us, Lieutenant?”
“Well, eh,” Artus started saying, desperately looking for some excuse not to let the two of them slip away. Then his luck turned as he saw Major Brie coming through the corridor towards them. She was probably looking for the cadets, so Artus decided to use this opportunity to further impress the girls.
“Look, there comes Major Brie. A good friend of mine. Have you been properly introduced yet?” he said with a winning smile on his face.

Brie had started to look for Artus. First she had checked the men's barracks. They suggested that she check the simms, someone had seen him earlier heading in that direction. Brie noticed two things, no one really seemed to want to talk about Artus, and the men in Gold Squadron weren’t overly comfortable having a woman walk into their barracks, even if it was just through the front door. She debated whether or not it would soon be time for an unannounced inspection as she headed towards the simulators.
As she walked down a corridor near the simms she saw a man with his back towards her, speaking with two women that she didn’t know. The man turned, Brie sighed with relief that she had found Artus so easily. He smiled that cocky smile that he seemed to think was so charming, and then she heard him say, “Look, there comes Major Brie. A good friend of mine. Have you been properly introduced yet?” Obviously he had underestimated her hearing, since the statement was for the two women.
Brie approached the group, deciding for Amy’s sake to ignore what she had just heard him say. “Lieutenant, I was just looking for you,” she said instead, a grin just as fake spreading across her own face. She looked at the two women, remembering how Artus had declared his love for Amy but had also said that there was nothing wrong with "just looking" elsewhere. Then she recalled that she had told him to stay away from Amy because of her engagement to Charybdis, a sealing that Amy now said would never take place. Her mind drifted briefly to the shooting, she could see the crawlon so clearly that she almost expected one to be on the wall behind them. But something about the shooting didn’t seem quite right... “So, who are your friends?” she asked at last.

Artus just managed to not take a sigh of relief. He knew that Brie could have shot him down right there and then. Figuratively speaking this time.
He knew she might not approve of what he was doing, even if it was just getting aquainted with these two lovely young cadets. For a secton there he though she might call him on the fact that he had professed his love for Amy and was now talking to these two. But by the Lords of Kobol, it was Brie herself who had told him that he should stay away from Amy. Sometimes Brie was a little too protective of Amy. It wasn't like she was her mother or something.
At that moment Brie walked over to the group. She said ; “Lieutenant, I was just looking for you,” and gave Artus one of the warmest smiles he had ever seen her give. Right after that her eyes went all misty and her thoughts seemed to drift away as she was looking at him. And she held that look for a long time.
This in turn made Artus a little nervous. Maybe Brie had other motives for telling him to stay away from Amy?
Trying to keep his head cool, Artus finally heard Brie ask him:“So, who are your friends?”
The tone of the question startled Artus. Was she fathoming her potential rivals? This just couldn't be. But then again, Brie had shot him, an emotional response. Could that have been out of jealousy? And she was about the only person who had come to see him in sickbay. Was she arranging this along some kind of elaborate plan?
He cleared his throat, and gave Brie a curtious, but formal head nod.
"Major, these are cadets Persephone and, ehm.. Misty?"
The girl nodded.
"Anyway, " Artus continued; "as they are part of Gold Squadron I thought they might want to meet their commander, and vice versa."
