"Whatever the reason" Amy replied, smiling. "You're worth it."
"Worth what?" Brie asked.
Amy shrugged, her smile fading. "You're a catch. Worth pursuing. Whoever is after you isn't going to quit. Remember that."
"Exactly who is after me?"
Amy's smile returned slowly. "Major Justin, of course. Now come on, let's pick out clothes. You have to decide what kind of dinner this is going to be. You just want a meal, or do you want Major Justin to ask you out again?"

"There's something that I really wanted to wear," Brie started, not answering Amy’s question, “but the more I think about it the more I’m thinking that I shouldn’t.”
“Why?” Amy wanted to know.
“It’s a little much,” Brie said quickly. “Or maybe I should say not enough. Come on, I’ll show you.” Brie went back into the bedroom, biting her tongue to not mention the mess. The dress was still in the back of the closet. The simple black dress seemed even smaller than the last time that Brie had looked at it. “It comes with a wrap,” was all that Brie could think of to say.

"You're really nervous about this, aren't you?" Amy said.
She took Brie by the hand. "I've got an idea. If I'm a fourth turbo again, just say so. But what if I came along? Made a double date out of it? I've got a red dress pretty close to this black one. If I ever get my stuff back that is. We could really make it work, the two of us. Like sisters! What do you think?"
"Who would you ask?" Brie wondered.
"Well, I have to confess. I saw the new postings for Gold on your desk. I've been meaning to see Artus anyway. I could ask him to come." Amy looked expectantly at Brie, but knew that she really was being a fourth turbo. She smiled, trying to look as cute as possible....

"No," Brie said as quickly as possible. "There's no way that I want Artus to be anywhere near.........okay, honey, you'd be a forth turbo." She paused, thinking. "Truth be told, I really want to go. Justin has been a really good friend to me, he stood by me when other people who were supposed to be my friends couldn't find the time. I don't know, I guess I'm just putting too much pressure on myself. I think what I'm most scared of is that I'll disappoint Justin. I'm afraid that he thinks that I'm something better than I am. I know, it makes no sense. And me, dating a warrior again? What am I thinking, warriors die! That's why I allowed myself to be talked into the adoption, so you wouldn't have to go through the loss. And so you know, I really want to tell Justin about you and me, but I want to wait until we're alone. I want to give him the chance for an honest reaction." Brie paused again. "So tell me the truth, will the dress make me look like a socialator or not?"

Amy knew the disappointment showed on her face, but there wasn't much she could do about it. The idea of a double date sounded good the more she thought about it, but in the end she had put her mom in an awkward position. Brie already had a date with Justin, and for Amy to suddenly be tagging along... she was sorry she'd suggested it.
This whole mother-daughter thing, it really was in name only. While her mom had known since the day Amy had been born, Amy had only just learned of it. If a true bond would form, that remained to be seen, and Amy was maybe a bit too eager to make up for lost time. They'd already had a friendship, but the sort of bond Amy wanted was entirely different. It couldn't be rushed. It was a slow process, and mistakes were bound to be made. Amy promised herself she'd think things through before she spoke.
That'd be a first, Amy thought.
It was okay though. Once her mom had left for her date, Amy could still contact Artus....
"The dress?" Brie asked again, breaking the silence.
"Huh?" Amy said, coming back to the conversation. "No, no. You'll look beautiful. Beautiful."

Brie suddenly realized that the entire conversation had been about her date with Justin. She was still having a hard time really thinking of Amy as her daughter, she had convinced herself that she had given up that right a long time ago. Suddenly allowing herself to entertain the idea that they could be more than friends...but what did Brie know about being a mother? She barely even remembered her own. There was only one conversation that she recalled at all. "If you ever take the seal, promise me that you'll make sure that it's a special day. Don't elope."
"Excuse me?" Amy said.
Brie snapped back to the moment. "Oh, sorry, I didn't realize that I said that out loud. That's the only thing I remember my own mother ever saying to me." Brie sighed. "I'm sorry, Amy. This is going to be a learning process, isn't it? I think it' going to be a bit easier when we start telling people. Have you said anything to your mother? I mean, your other mother? I mean, Abby?"

"I wanted to" Amy said. "I really wanted to. But the last time she stopped in my room she was really really excited about a date she was going on." She smiled. "Sort of like you. She was so happy I couldn't tell her anything except have fun."
"When I was released from medlab there was a message at the desk saying she'd returned to the Agro ship, so I guess the date didn't turn out too well. I'm worried about her. Suddenly being chief farmer, I don't know if she's cut out for it. It's a lot, especially so soon after dad...Elmer passing away."
Amy's mood seem to sour a little. Her expression grew grim and she seemed lost in thought. Then she came out of it. "So that would be a no. I haven't told Abby anything yet."

"Maybe we should shuttle over there," Brie suggested. The Ago Ship was just about the last place that she wanted to return to but she'd be willing to for Amy. "Sometime soon. I really want to change all our files, make everything official with me listed as your birth mother and finally include the adoption, but I also want to be fair to Abby. I'm really grateful to her and Elmer but especially to Abby. She really, really loves you, Amy." There was a knock on the office door, causing Brie to jump. She glanced at her chrono. "Frack, Justin's two centons early, and I'm not even dressed yet."
"Don't worry, I'll stall him," Amy said, heading back into the office. Brie wasn't sure but Amy seemed relieved for the interruption.
Without wasting any time, Brie threw on the dress, then went looking through the mess for a decent pair of shoes. She would never understand some women's infatuation with them! Brie could hear voices, Amy was speaking with someone but it didn't sound like Justin. "Major Brie, they need your signature," Amy called.
Brie breathed a sigh of relief, wondering why Amy had referred to her by her title. It must have been someone official at the door. "I'm coming."
Microns later Brie was back in her office, staring at several boxes in the middle of the floor. A young ensign was standing behind them with a clipboard. "Major Brie?" he said, a look of surprise on his face.
"Yes," Brie said, slightly amused by his reaction. "Can I help you?"
"Oh, sorry, Ma'am," he replied. "This stuff was taken out of storage, it belongs to a Captain Amy..."
"Where do you need me to sign?" Brie asked. He pointed at a line and she signed it. "Thank you, Ensign. That will be all."
"Yes, Ma'am." He checked the clipboard and left.
As the door closed behind him Brie burst out laughing. "Obviously I'm not going to have to worry about being recognized! No one around here has even seen me in civilian clothes before." She threw the wrap around her shoulders and glanced at her chrono again. Her face fell. "He's two centons late. He's not coming."

Note.. The following occurs after JustinB meets with Ensign Severin. *******************
With the meeting with Ensign Severin over, it was time to get to matters at hand. The date with Brie was getting closer by the micron and then all the nerves set in. I realised that I had only been on a few dates in my lifetime and that it was the first one with a fellow warrior. It was also the first time I went out with someone older than me.
Looking in the mirror, I wondered whether I was over dressed or not dressed up enough. "get a hold of yourself JustinB' I thought to myself. I have fought strange creatures on remote planets, survived in a tail of a comet and even survived when the cylons had the upper hand.
Brie, I wondered whether she was feeling something similar. To make sure she hadn't backed out, I decided to give a her buzz. Hitting the comm panel, I placed a call through to her quarters. Crossing my fingers I hoped she hadn't changed her mind

Brie knew that Amy was enjoying watching her sweat, which didn't make things any easier. She was sure that JustinB had forgotten. She understood, as a squadron leader herself she knew very well that things could come up that would mean dropping everything else. She expected to get a message from him in a cycle or two, apologizing. It would start with the words, "Sorry, but something came up..."
A small movement across the room took Brie's attention for a micron. "Did you see that?" she asked Amy. "It was the biggest rat I've ever seen! I'll have to put in a call to pest control."
"No," Amy said quickly with a laugh. "It's not a rat. Holodoc loaned me one of her kittens, remember?"
"Oh, I didn't realize that you brought it with you," Brie said, picturing what a mess a kitten would make of her quarters. Before she said anything else her comm beeped, causing her to jump. Without even looking at her Brie knew that Amy was probably laughing again. As she was about to answer Brie, without realizing it, slipped back into squadron-leader mode. The call could be official and important. Her voice became quite serious. "This is Major Brie, how may I help you?"
