I followed Brie and sat down next to her. Whatever she had on her mind was obviously important. As for her lying about something, if she did there was a reason for it.
"Brie, whatever it is, it can't be that bad." I said placing her hand in mine. I waited for what she had to say.

The producer had just given the signal to end the segment, FINALLY! Roxzanna-Rizou, giving her fabulous smile, cut in on Hroglar and said, "Thank you, Assistant Science Officer Hroglar, Retired, formerly of the Battlestar Galactica. We will be bringing you more details about the upcoming jump as they become available. For now, please remember, if you have news, any type of news," she said, using her typical code words for celebrity or near celebrity gossip, "you can contact me at the IFB. Thank you, and good evening for now."

"It's not actually bad," Brie said, still not looking directly at JustinB. "In fact it has the potential to be wonderful. The story that I told back on the Agro Ship, the one that I've been denying vehemently ever since...well, it's true. Amy really is my daughter." She looked up and into JustinB's eyes. He had been with her when Commander Apollo had been blindsided by the question of Amy's paternity on IFB. She wondered if JustinB already realized that it was the truth. Even if he hadn't, she had lied directly to him after the Commander's interview. She hoped he could forgive her.

I looked at Brie for a few microns then smiled.
"Brie, that's great news. To be honest with you, back on the Callisto earlier tonight, I had a sneaking suspicion you two were more than best friends. But as for the lying bit, you obviously had a reason to do so and I don't hold that against you."
Brie just looked absolutely bewildered. It was like she didn't know if she wanted to laugh or cry. I placed my arm around her to comfort her.
"Now you have that burden lifted off you, how abouts we talk more about you reuniting with your daughter over some dinner and a bottle of Ambrosia."

"You're incredible, do you know that?" Brie leaned closer and kissed JustinB. After several microns she pulled away. "The first time we kissed it was heavily influenced by the grog that we had been sharing. I wanted to make sure that you knew that this time the alcohol had nothing to do with it." She smiled, life was just about as perfect at that micron as it could be. "Now about that Ambrosia..."

Brie had surprised with the kiss but I did enjoy it.
"Now about that Ambrosia..." she said.
"Coming right up, " I replied standing up and making my way to the bar. I looked around an found two glasses. Whilst pouring Brie's ambrosia, I hit a button to summon Pedros to take our order for our meal.
I sat down next to Brie and handed her the ambrosia.
"Pedros is on his way to take our order, but before he arrives I would love to propose a toast. Here is to a beautiful woman, that's you and you reuniting with your daughter after all these yahrens."

Brie raised her glass. "And here's to new beginnings." They both took a sip. "That's certainly a whole lot more aged than what they serve in the Officers' Club," she remarked. She put down her glass. Feeling slightly warm she decided it was time that she took off her wrap, which she placed carefully on the back of the sofa. She felt slightly self-conscious since the dress was a bit revealing, but it was also tastefully made. She picked up her glass again and took another small sip. She didn't want to drink too much on an empty stomach. She sat back, still holding her glass. "I was raped when I was seventeen," she began slowly. She didn't look at JustinB when she said it, somehow she could never look anyone in the eyes when she made that statement. "On my eighteenth novayahren I found out I was pregnant. I wanted to keep my baby, I really did, but I allowed others to convince me that she'd be better off elsewhere. I was introduced to Elmer, the head farmer from the Agro Ship, and his wife Abby. They couldn't have children. Elmer had two conditions, first, he wanted everyone to think that this was their natural born child, and second, I could never tell anyone. It had been drilled into my head my entire life that I was going to die young so that didn't seem like a problem to me. Abby pretended to be pregnant, and right before I was due I shuttled over to the Agro Ship. Amy was born there."
She took another small sip from her Ambrosia. "Amy grew up not knowing that she was adopted. I thought about her all the time but was convinced that I had done the right thing. Then one day I went to meet the new recruits getting off the shuttle, and there she was. I recognized her immediately, she looks just like my own mother. I had given up any right to call myself her mother, but we immediately formed a friendship, a bond that Amy couldn’t at the time fully understand. When I said that she's my best friend I meant it. I was satisfied with that." She looked up at JustinB. "Now you know why I was so upset on the Galactica. It wasn't just members of my team that we had left behind, it was my daughter. Then there was my Tribunal and Pierce’s mutiny, and the only reason I even said anything at all was because those stubborn farmers wouldn’t listen to me otherwise. And I thought I was going to die there anyway.” She smiled. “I would have, if you hadn’t flown me off of that ship.” She took another sip. “After that I still denied it, partly because of my promise to Elmer and partly because I didn’t want to put Amy in danger from any followers Pierce might still have around. But then Elmer died and Abby decided to go ahead and tell Amy anyway, without letting me know. It was the strangest thing, I went by to see Amy after her surgery, and I had an overwhelming feeling that I needed to tell her the whole story. So I did. I had no idea that she already knew. We fought it out, very badly at first, because in my mind I still thought that I had no right to refer to myself as her mother. I still don't, not really. Abby is Amy's mother in every way that matters. But Amy wants to give it a try, and quite honestly, so do I." She took another sip, then placed the half-empty glass back on the table. "That's the short version. We need to change things in our files, and then of course there's the announcement to the squadron that I'll have to make. It will be all over the fleet soon enough. I'm going to leave out how she was conceived because I don't want that creep to know. Plus it really is nobody's business unless I chose to share it with them."
The door opened and Pedros entered. Brie was slightly relieved, she had just given JustinB a whole lot to think about and she knew that there was no real answer to what she had told him. "The chef would like you to know, Madam, that Mr. Cracken has informed us that you are a vegetarian, and that he will easily be able to accommodate your wishes. Are you ready to order?”
Brie grinned at JustinB. “You thought of everything, didn’t you?”

Taking in what Brie had to tell me nearly blew me away at first. But as she kept explaining what had happened and what's happened since it didn't matter what happened in the past. The here and now was important. As Brie finished Pedros came in order pad in hand.
"The chef would like you to know, Madam, that Mr. Cracken has informed us that you are a vegetarian, and that he will easily be able to accommodate your wishes. Are you ready to order?”
Brie grinned at me and said “You thought of everything, didn’t you?”
"Finding out you were a vegetarian was easy enough. As for thinking of everything, I wanted to make sure tonight went smoothly," turning to Pedros I placed my order, "I will have a bovine steak with the chefs choice of vegetables please." I waited for Brie to order and Pedros to leave so we could continue our talk.

"Do you have giambotta?" Brie asked the waiter.
“Of course,” was Pedros’ reply.
“That would be great,” Brie said. “And a small salad, with dressing on the side.”
“Very well. Your dinner will be ready in a few centons. If there is anything else, just let me know.” Pedros left, the door closing behind him.
“It’s a vegetable stew,” Brie explained to JustinB. “Originating from Gemon. I’m one quarter Gemonese, so that’s probably why I ended up with a taste for it. And it’s not exactly the type of thing that they serve in the Mess Hall on the Callisto.” She picked up her glass and took a very small sip of Ambrosia, then placed it back on the table. In a way Pedros’ entrance had been a welcome intrusion, but it had also interrupted the flow of a pretty heavy conversation. “I guess I’m just trying to warn you that I come with a lot of baggage. If the IFB has nothing better to do they’re going to paint me like I was a teenage socialator or something, especially since when I admit to everyone that I am Amy’s birth mother I’m going to lie through my teeth and say I don‘t know who her birth father is. I don’t really care about the IFB, it’s not like they haven’t spread all kinds of lies about me before, and hopefully no one believes most of what they say anyway. But what it comes down to is...I’ll understand if you don’t want to get caught in the backwash. If you want we can leave this as having had a really nice evening together, and go back to just being friends.”

"Brie, I never judge someone totally by their past. As with you coming with a lot of baggage, so what. I'm up to any challenge life will throw at us and I'm dammed if I will run away from someone as good as you. Whatever happens, whatever rumours are spread by the IFB, I'll be there by your side through thick and thin. Now that little speech is out of the way, tell me how you are part Gemon and why you decide to become a vegetarian." I said in a reassuring voice.
