Lucian When they arrived, Captain Amy and a couple of Techs were still there examining the pieces. Dr. CureMode had examined the results of the electronic, broadcast, and bio-scans performed by the Techs, and had allowed Commander Sheba to approach the remains of the beacon. They were both squatting down looking at the debris when Sheba cocked her head toward the Science Officer and said, “Analysis?”
Using a metal rod, CureMode was gently lifting individual pieces, looking for any clues as to the functioning or origin of the device. Leaning forward, he rose to his feet, knees popping, and said, “You’ll need to check the flight log, but I believe that the shuttle came in before a number of the Vipers landed. We made our final course correction for jump vector just after the last Vipers were secured, and then we went into the jump. Assuming that the beacon was functioning, it would have, at minimum, given the heading of the shuttle just before landing, and possibly, if it continued to function after impact, would have revealed our heading into the jump. There is no way of knowing for sure.”
“What if it continued to function after we entered the jump?” Sheba asked.
“If so, we must rely on what we know of the Cylons’ communications capabilities, which isn’t much. We believe that they rely primarily on their scout ships for communications, with what FTL capability they have limited to a large, high energy fixed broadcast facilities. However, that is based on intelligence that is now 25 yahrens old, and we have no idea what they’ve developed in the interim. Assuming that it is not FTL, then you have a signal broadcast at light speed from a ship speeding away at many times the speed of light in jump space. The signal might eventually get there, but signal length would probably be stretched to the point of being unrecognizable, and it would take so long to be received and interpreted that it wouldn’t matter anyway.”
“What do you mean?”
“If it was, or even is, still broadcasting, they’d already have our heading from the broadcast interval just before the jump as we moved to the jump vector. Even if they didn’t have that heading, it still wouldn’t matter, since by the time they received the heading, we’d be long gone,” said CureMode.
Sheba looked at CureMode and said, “That, Doctor, is why I don’t always trust you scientists and engineers. You folks paint everything in shades of gray, with assumptions, ‘if’s, ‘possibly’s, ‘might’s, ‘probably’s, and ‘maybes.’”
CureMode cracked a brief grin as he replied, “Commander, that could be the case.”
Pretending to ignore his jab, Sheba moved well away from the device and whispered to the Techs. CureMode and Amy followed. “Help Dr. CureMode with this thing. Take it to the Science Lab. CureMode, get Solon and your scientists to look over this thing, run whatever analyses are necessary to determine what the composition is and where it originated. When done, I want it loaded onto one of our forward missles. As soon as we get to Vossarian system, before we make any course changes, we’re going to fire that missile.”
“Commander?” questioned CureMode, wondering her intent while at the same time thinking that it was highly unlikely that the origin of the device could be discovered since the Colonials had little information about Cylon manufacturing facilities or capabilities. Still it wouldn't hurt to try...
Sheba smiled, “If it is still broadcasting, which I’m actually hoping it is, we’ve going to make it look like we came out of the jump completely out of control and crashed into the Vossar star. Unless we run into Cylons already there, we’ll be leaving the Vossarian system within a few centars of arriving. We will follow our planned detour, just in case, prior to joining the fleet after yet another jump.”
Turning to Amy, Sheba said, “Captain, you have done a great service to our people in discovering this. Well done!” She extended her hand to the Captain. * * * Amy Turning to me, Sheba said, "Captain, you have done a great service to our people in discovering this. Well done!"
She offered her hand to me, and I shook it, nodding but saying nothing. What can you say to the commander after she says something like that? 'Aw, it was nothing'? 'Now about that raise'? It was better to stay silent. But I was filled with pride over what I had accomplished. I'd exposed yet another example of Cylon evil, and actually relieved Marcus of any possible responsibility for the crash landing. I'd have to tell him next time I saw him, if I could get him to focus on something other than the seal for a micron.
As I watched the Commander leave the deck, it suddenly hit me that maybe I'd just grown into my new rank. Maybe I'd be able to cut it as a captain after all. I'd done Gold Squadron proud, justified Brie's faith in selecting me for Captain, and actually got through a mission without ending up in trouble over something. Yeah, this was what being a warrior was all about, and why I'd worked so hard over the yahrens to get to this point.
In spite of myself, I broke out into a grin as I headed for the exit. In the corner sat the twisted wreckage, and my smile faded. The site of my greatest accomplishment as a warrior could just as easily been my coffin. Be happy, the tech had said, that you walked away. Good advice, I thought. * * * Hawke "Major, wait a micron!" Brie slammed the door in my face as she stalks out of the room. "Dammit!" This is not going well. I head over to Brie's office and nose around a bit. I don't find anything obvious. I plant a listening device in one of her book cases. I take out a reciever and test it. Perfect! I get out and head back to my quarters. I hook the reciever up to a recording device. "Medical condition.. My ass. You're covering something up,Brie." * * * Brie Brie sat in her office, waiting for Skyler. He’d be there in just two centons, she knew he’d be on time. She turned on her computer and accessed her own file. She typed in her security code and stared at the information in front of her. One centon left. Skyler was in some ways her closest friend. Would he think of her differently, now that he was about to know? Her door buzzed. “Enter,” Brie said. She pointed to a seat and Skyler sat down.
“What is it you needed to see me about?” Skyler asked. There was a slight tenseness in his voice that Brie wasn’t used to. Brie didn’t say anything, she couldn’t find the words. “I realize that anything said will stay right here in this room, if that helps any. And I meant what I told you before.”
“I know.” Brie took a deep breath. She couldn’t even look at Skyler. “I tried to kill myself.”
Unsure of what else to say, Skyler asked, “When?”
“After Turner disappeared,” Brie continued. “I had a nervous breakdown. I was diagnosed as being paranoid, delusional, and of course depressed. Here, there’s something I want to show you.” She showed Skyler the restricted section of her file. A lot of it was filled with medical reports, which Skyler skimmed over. He seemed a bit uncomfortable reading it.
“That was a long time ago,” Skyler said at last. “Anybody who knows you now...”
“That’s not the problem,” Brie interrupted. “People are digging around in this again, and I don’t know why. But my file doesn’t tell the entire story. There’s something that even Charybdis doesn’t know.”
“You don’t have to tell me,” Skyler said.
“I want you to know,” Brie explained. She looked Skyler straight in the eyes and realized that she trusted him more than anyone else that she knew. “The truth is, besides the depression, I faked the whole thing.” * * * “You faked it?” Skyler repeated. He seemed confused, and for good reason.
“The suicide attempted was semi-real,” Brie continued. “I didn’t give a frack if someone found me or if I died. But I never went insane, although they were pretty close to driving me there a few times. It’s a long, complicated story.” Brie told him about the last few sectons leading up to Turner’s disappearance. He listened closely and seemed to believe every word that she said. “Now you understand why I don’t want anyone knowing about this. With no one believing me, everyone was safe, especially Charybdis. And if my file gets opened...”
“The whole thing could start up again,” Skyler said.
“You’d be in danger too,” Brie said, “if anyone finds out that you know.”
“I can take care of myself,” Skyler insisted.
“I know you can,” Brie agreed.
“What do you need me to do?” Skyler asked.
“Keep your eyes and ears open,” Brie said. “And you might want to talk to Killjoy. He’s under Justin’s care at the moment. I need to know if he’s lying or not. You two got along pretty well when we worked with him before. I don’t know, I just can’t believe what he’s saying.” * * *

Skyler "Brie, Charybdis has me looking into Killjoy's past. I have the computers doing a search, looking for any relative information. Since I have Sheba's access codes for this one, I doubt there is much that will slip by unnoticed. I will stop by and see Killjoy as soon as I get that information. Might be a little tid bit in there that will put pressure on him to spit out the truth, if he hasn't already."
pausing for a few microns, Skyler took a breath,
"Brie, I also now what you went through. She was not my wife, but I lost someone I was deeply in love with. Her name was Kellie, and she was my reason for living. Took me a while to get over her.... Not that I am over her. You never really get over them. Then there was that thing with Mara, well time heals wounds, and you move on. You find others to help you fill that void, friends, loved ones, etc. You know all of this already, it has been a long time since this happened. You have moved on with your life, and, you have some close friends. I am honored to be one of them. I am even more honored that you trust me enough to share such personal information. It will not go any farther than this room. If it makes any difference, I believe you. It may be to late to change the outcome of those events, but I do believe you. In my poking around, I also might see what I can dig up on those events you mentioned. Since I have those access codes for a few cycles to look up suspects on the hacking problem, I might as well see what else is hidden in the system that can help you."
"Skyler, I do not want you getting into any trouble with this. I do not know what I would do if they did something to you too. I have very few people I really trust, and call close friends, and if they did anything to one of them, I might really have that break down."
"Brie, I will be careful, I will watch my back, and look out for yours as well. If they are still around, they might be trying to find out how much is in those records, and who they need to take out. In that case, we need to find out. If my digging around makes me a target and draws them out after me, it might help save you ,and even Charybdis, than I am happy to become a target. I am a warrior, I know risk is part of the job. I never know if this cycle will be the last one. I know dying is part of the job, and I have been prepared for that for a life time, putting my neck on the line for the Fleet, for people I do not know, this time I will have it out there for a friend, and that makes it all the more worth while."
"I know I can not talk you out of any of this. I could order you to leave it alone, but I know you will do it anyway. <mumbling> What is it about Warriors not listening to their CO's? Skyler, please just trust your instincts, and be careful..."
"I will, but only if you promise to do the same."
Before Brie could answer, her comm unit buzzed through with a message from Lt. Marcus. Skyler used this as his chance to leave. He still had some digging to do in the personnel records to see what more he could learn about Killjoy.
"See you later Brie." Brie nodded from behind her terminal as Skyler left the room. * * * Marcus I sent a message to Major Brie it read
Major Brie
I need to request bigger quarters for myself and Captain Stadia. I don't know who else to ask about this. If I need to let someone else know about this please let me know.
Thank you Lt. Marcus * * * Killjoy Killjoy and RaycerX made there way to the officers club with little conversation between them. RaycerX had ask Killjoy what all the fuss was about with him but Killjoy decided not to answer any question put to him by the officer, and just told him he shouldn’t get involved any more than he already was.
As the two made their way into the club, Killjoy spotted Justin sitting alone at a table and motioning for them to join him. Justin spoke when the two reached the table.
"RaycerX, considered yourself relieved. I will take it from here, " RaycerX gave a node and turned to go find a place to sit.
"What can I do for you Killjoy?"
"Nothing really Justin, I just left Medlab and I figured I'd bring my keeper down to grab a bite."
Justin couldn’t help smile at the description of RaycerX as Killjoy's keeper. He figured Killjoy must feel like a prisoner being followed around that way and figured he should try to settle Killjoy on the matter.
"Look Killjoy, I know you hate this, and I can't say I blame you, but RaycerX was just there to look out for you. If something else happens it would be his word as to your whereabouts that could save you backside."
"I know Justin, Im just a little frustrated at the moment. Kinda hard to deal with this, but after the jump everything will be fine."
Justin couldn’t comprehend what the jump had to do with anything, and looked puzzled by Killjoys response. Killjoy picked up on this and figured he had better explain.
"Just so you know Justin, after we complete the jumps, I plan to resign my commission and leave the Callisto and maybe even the fleet. No one around here is going to take me serious as a warrior after all this gets out. I still have a few connections with the folks I used to do business with and Im sure they could provide me with a new shuttle, then Im out of here and out of this mess. Besides if I stay here then sooner or later Id have to work with Major Brie again, and I really don’t think she would allow that. I think she'll probably be glad so see me go anyway." * * * JustinB Killjoy's decision to resign made me furious inside. After a few microns though I settled.
"Resign, like Hades you will," I said out loud. Seeing heads turn in our direction, I continued on discreetly. "Look Lieutenant, I said I will help you get out of this mess and I will. I have talked to Kaylib and taken his statement. I have a few leads of which I am in the process of following. So there is now way in Hades I am going to let you resign your commission. I know you have problems with trust. But you have to trust me no matter what your doubts and what ever action I take. Action number one is that we are going to see Major Brie in private. You will tell her the truth including your feelings towards her. If you refuse my reasonable request I will make sure you spend the time it takes to clear your name under the Doc's constant supervision. I hate to threaten you since you are a good officer and I even consider you my friend. But I will not let you ruin your life because of what is happening. Major BatGal would agree with me. As for working with people who were hurt due to your actions I know. I was in command of a squad of warriors who help defend this ship against Nomen conspirators. One of my decisions got two of them wounded. But life goes on. Now let’s make our way to see Major Brie." * * *

Killjoy JustinB's response to Killjoy's news caught Killjoy totally of guard. Why should Justin care if he resigned? What difference should it make to him? The look on Justin's face was one of concern and anger. It was obvious that Justin was going to have nothing to do with Killjoy's idea of the future. Killjoy's frustration with the whole situation had reached its limit and he began to rant as be became angry.
"Look Justin, I know you're doing your best for me on this. But not you or anyone else on this ship can stop an officer who wants to resign. It's in the regulations, look it up. Besides, there is no way in Hades you are going to clear me of this, haven't you heard what's going around here? Half the people on this ship thinks someone is trying to harm Brie and the other half think someone is selling them out to the Cylons. " Justin, they found a Cylon tracking device on that shuttle that crash-landed in the bay for Sagan's sake. Now who do you suppose they’ll nail with that? When these people find out I'm the mystery guest who admitted to the first security breach, the brass will have to lock me up just to keep them from killing me."
Killjoy stood up and started to walk away and noticed the chair he had just knocked over had drawn the undivided attention of several people…"And there is now way I'm going to talk to Brie. I'm not going anywhere near the woman. I don’t even want to think about her till I'm waving goodbye from the window of a cargo shuttle and on my way"……….
Justin stood up and confronted Killjoy.
"Lieutenant, You will lower you voice and then lower you butt back into that chair! You're still in the military, and friend or not you still answer to me. Now sit down and close that hole under you nose!"
Instinct and the years of training at the academy took over for Killjoy's emotions. His body tightened to attention and acknowledged the orders of his superior.
"Yes Captain"
Killjoy picked up the chair and sat back down. He looked around and wondered how much the other people in the room had heard, how long had they been listing. When Justin started to speak. Killjoy knew he had crossed the line as both a friend and an officer.
"Now Lieutenant Killjoy, you will maintain yourself. You will conduct yourself as an officer and do as you are told. My duty as an officer is to follow my orders and keep an eye on you. As you friend my duty lies in helping you get out of this with your reputation somewhat in tact. And just for the record, I intend to carry out my duty in both of these areas…..Do I make myself clear Lieutenant?"
Again Killjoy gave into his training.
"Yes Sir, very clear Sir."
"Very good Lieutenant, Now as I was saying. We are going to see Major Brie. You will tell her the truth about what your intentions were. She probably won't want to believe you but you need to make every effort to insure that she at least considers the possibility you're in love with her and not trying to endanger her in any way. Any further resistance from you on this will force me not only to place you under the Doc's care, but also to provide that care from the brig. Now get up and follow me to the Majors office."
"Yes Sir"
Killjoy stood and followed a few paces behind Justin. He noticed a sharp pain in his belly and had no idea if it was the Borrilian Phage acting up or if it was his nerves. Out in the corridor Killjoy spoke again.
"Uh Captain, I'm sorry about going nutty on you back there. Guess I'm just not dealing with this well at all. Truth is I've never felt this way about a wom…..Well you know what I mean."
"Yes I do know Killjoy. As for what happened back there, just make sure it never happens again or I'll have to lock you up till we figure this out. Best thing you can do is follow my lead. And before you ask, Yes I do believe that you have strong feeling for the Major, and I don’t think you're part of a conspiracy."
"Thank you Sir, may I ask you one thing though?"
"What is it Killjoy?"
Killjoy cleared his throat.
"Why is it we have to see Brie right now, wouldn’t it be better if we waited till thing settled a bit first?"
"Absolutely not Lieutenant. You and I both know you really care for the woman right?"
"Yes Sir but"…..
"But nothing Killjoy. Its time you went about this the right way and just explained to the woman how you feel. Give her a chance to respond to it in her own way, and see what happens."
"Ok Justin, I get it now, thanks. But I got another question for ya. Did you charge you weapon this morning?"
"Of course, why do you ask?"
"Well I have seen this lady in action, and I don’t think she is going to be real happy to see me. So if you don’t mind, just shot me before she beats me to death"………….. * * * Randrius As Killjoy had been afraid of, a few people had caught bits and pieces of their little conversation. One had caught every word of it and had felt pieces of a very confusing puzzle click together in his mind. He sat with back to the duo, taken up the appearance of not paying attention. In reality, he was catching every word he could. Randrius caught glimpses over his shoulder every so often, not too many as to draw attention to yourself. He waited until Killjoy left, with an ensign on his heels. He spun around and slid fluidily into the chair that Killjoy had vacated. JustinB face displayed puzzlement until he registered who the mystery man was. "You were eavesdropping, weren't you?" Justin said accusingly. Randrius shrugged, "I couldn't help myself." Randrius face grew back to its usual somber tone, "And I hope you know what you're doing here, your career could possibly take a hit in this mess." Justin nodded, "I'm aware of that, but I can't just let him sink." Randrius nodded and sipped his drink, "I'd have done the same thing." Randrius rose and patted him on the back as he walked by, "If you need help anytime just ask me." * * * JustinB "Ok JustinB, I get it now, thanks. But I got another question for ya. Did you charge you weapon this morning?" Killjoy asked.
"Of course, why do you ask?" I replied.
"Well I have seen this lady in action, and I don’t think she is going to be real happy to see me. So if you don’t mind, just shot me before she beats me to death"
An image popped into my head within a micron of Killjoy's last comment. There we are in Major Brie's Office. After walking in and telling her I had Killjoy behind me wanting to tell her something, she bears her teeth, growls a lot. Then she jumps from behind her desk, knocks me out then begins to pummel the life out of Killjoy. I wouldn't be surprised if Killjoy was thinking the same thing.
The thing was I knew Brie better than that. I know she will be annoyed I had brought the person who had tapped into her personal file. If I play my cards right, I knew I could at least make her hear out Killjoy with some impartialality.
I went to the comm panel and contacted Major Brie in her office.
"Yes Captain, what can I do for you?" she asked.
"I would like to talk to you in relation to that situation which is ongoing," I replied.
"Can it wait Captain? I am a trifle busy at the moment," she said.
"Actually Ma'am, it cannot."
"Be in my office in ten centons."
"Yes Ma'am," I replied.
Killjoy and I walked towards Brie's Office. As we got closer I could see that Killjoy was getting nervous. Along the way, he also got a few stares from people as they past us.
Upon reaching Major Brie's Office I turned to Killjoy and said, "Killjoy, I will have a brief talk to Brie first, then it is up too you. Then once you go in tell her everything," He nodded as his throat was swollen with nerves.
"Major Brie," I said as I entered.
"What is so important that couldn't wait," she asked.
"Major, I have Lieutenant Killjoy outs...,"
"Killjoy, how dare you bring him to me," she yelled cutting me off mid-sentence.
"Major, I know you to be a reasonable person and a hellava C.O. I believe you owe it to him to at least hear him out and hear what he has too say. It might even change your mind slightly. If that fails, I am sure he would even take part in a memory scan to clear his name." I said.
With a little enthusiasm, Major Brie motioned with her hand and said, "Bring him in."
I nodded and went to the door and ushered Killjoy in. I then whispered to him, "Yell out if you need me. I'm just outside.” * * *

Marcus After I sent the message to Major Brie I headed to med bay. I arrived in med bay to see Artus.
"Hello again Artus. I heard what you said to Stadia. I want to thank you for being my friend and looking out for me. I would like to ask you to stand with me at my sealing to Stadia as my best man. I could think of no one else I would rather have watching my back than you."
"I am sorry that I got mad at you earlier. I do consider you a friend." I extend my hand to Artus. "Can you forgive me friend?" * * * I needed to send another message to Major Brie. The message read:
Major Brie I would like to humbly request for a furlon for three cycles for myself and captain Stadia to allow us to conclude our sealing and settle in to our new quarters. I thank you for your time. If there are any problems please contact me. Lt. Marcus
* * * Artus did the best he could to shake Marcus’s hand. "Not to worry Marcus I was just looking out for a friend. I would be glad to stand with you as your best man."
I turned to find the doctor Excuse me Doctor bkj99 I would like to see if we could have Lt. Artus released by 0500 to attend my sealing to Captain Stadia."
The doctor looked at me with a smile on her face "Well, we do need to give him one more large injection before he goes, but I don’t see a problem with that. Congratulations to you and Stadia on your upcoming sealing I am happy for both of you."
"Thanks Doc." Turning back to Artus "Artus I will see you in dress uniform in the officer club at 0530, don’t be late." * * * After seeing Artus I headed out of med bay and walked into the gold squadron barracks and went to my locker. Opening the locker I retrieved a small box wrapped with a golden ribbon. Unwrapping and opening the small box I looked inside to see the rings my father had given me when I came aboard the Callisto. They had been in my family for yahrens. My grandparents had them for their sealing and they were passed down to my father then to me. They were two golden rings intricately inlaid with the silver symbols. They are most dear to me and would be perfect for my sealing with Stadia.
After retrieving the rings I got a shower then got out my dress uniform. I nervously got dressed. It was 0530 when I headed to the officers club to wait for my sealing to Stadia, the love of my life. My nerves were on end.
I walked into the officers club. The guests had already started to gather. Artus was waiting for me "Hey Marcus you ok." Looking very nervous I said "Just nervous Artus." He looked at me and said "RELAX Marcus you will do just fine."
"Thanks Artus I will try, here are the rings" I handed Artus the small box. "Wow Marcus these are great. I know Stadia will love them." * * * Stadia You are cordially invited to attend the Sealing Ceremony of Stadia and Marcus.
To be held in the Officers Club in three cycles. Time will be 0600. * * * Stadia headed to the bridge to find Major Lucian. Despite what had happen between them, she hoped that he would stand in her fathers place.
She entered the bridge and looked around. Seeing him looking at some reports, she walked over to him. "Major, may I speak to you?"
"Sure. Whats up?"
They moved toward his office.
"As you know doubt know Marcus and I have decided to be sealed and I want to know if you will stand in for my father?" * * * Lucian "Major, may I speak to you?"
Lucian looked up from the latest report on the plan for the Vossarian system. Based on preliminary calculations, the Callisto would be able to perform a jump node study immediately after entering the system, then continue traveling straight toward the Vossarian star at flank speed. When close enough, a second jump node study would be performed, the missile with the Cylon beacon fired into the sun, and the Callisto and the CQ would travel to the jump point triangulated from the two jump node studies. It could all be accomplished in a matter of centars, even before the Cylons could arrive, and there would be no need for Viper cover. Since the Callisto was running low on fuel, this would be good, since the fuel shortage was of growing concern. He looked at Stadia and said, "Sure. Whats up?"
She motioned to the side, so they moved toward his little office at the perimeter of the Bridge. "Sorry for the space. My Black Squadron office was seemingly immense in comparison to this," he said with a grin. Both knew that on a Battlestar, only Alpha and Beta Bays, where Vipers were launched, serviced, and recovered, could really be described as 'immense.' In good conscience, anyway.
Stadia got down to business, "As you know doubt know Marcus and I have decided to be sealed and I want to know if you will stand in for my father?"
Lucian looked at Stadia and said, "Stadia, if that is what you want, I will be glad stand in for your father for you. You might want to know, though, that the only sealing ceremony I've ever attended was on the 'O-9' when I was just a few yahrens of age. To maintain the proper decorum, I'll need some instruction on what is required." * * * Stadia "Here is the when and where. Be sure to wear your dress uniform. oh and be sure to meet me at the doors to the officers club at 0600." She kissed him on the check and turned on the heels of her shoes. * * *

Amy Relieved over my solving the riddle of the rolling of the shuttle and discovery of the Cylon transmitter, I moved on to my other duties, one of which was to check in on the Gastronovian refugees, who we had rescued from the Cylons sectons ago. We had promised them protection, but they found themselves on a ship already overcrowded and low on supplies, and their morale soon sunk as low as our quantities of remaining food. A number of them had taken the opportunity to ship over to the CQ, but since the entire people couldn't come to a concensus, the greater majority had stayed put. My orders were to take two warriors with me, but I couldn't find anyone in my squadron to help me. Marcus and Stadia were preoccupied. Though Stadia was grounded, Marcus wasn't, but he didn't seem to have much attention to duty. I suppose I should put him on report, but I didn't have the heart. But it wasn't making my job any easier, that was for sure. Najinn wasn't anywhere to be found either. I hadn't seen him since our early morning talk. And Artus was in medlab still. I was tempted to contact Black Squadron for help, but there was a matter of pride involved. To admit I needed help because I couldn't find a Gold Warrior interested or available was just too embarrassing to admit. I entered the refugee sector, an area of living space that caused doubling up of warriors in other areas, and began to check on the people. I needed to catalog their needs and list their concerns. It promised to not be a pleasant task. * * * As I walked down the main hallway, I noticed a banner that had been hung from the ceiling. The writing was not familiar to me, but it was unmistakenly a flag of sorts. From the clusters of people on the sides of the hall, one man stepped forward to block my path. "You're entering Gastronovian ground, warrior", he announced as he tried to look as imposing as he could. "What business have you to tend to here?" I didn't have to explain myself, and I actually wanted to just take this guy down, but I held back. But his manner of talking down to me instantly pissed me off. "I'm here under orders to see to your concerns", I replied. The man rolled with laughter, and some in the immediate area joined in. "You?" he asked, "And what is one female going to accomplish? Do you know how many we number here?" I keyed into my clipboard device, brought up a readout, and turned it around so he could see it. "That many?" I asked as pleasantly as I could. As his sneer slipped from his face, my attention was diverted by a woman in soiled garments who stepped in front of the man and took my hand. "Come, warrior, you be welcome here." She shot the man a glance of ice, and he returned it. Women were second class around here, but it seemed like some strides were being made. The man glared at me too, but I kept my expression pleasant as I walked past him, following the woman. He must have said something, because he and others around him started laughing again. At my expense, I was certain. The air itself seemed charged, and I really wished I'd had help. Thankfully I had my comlink. If things got too bad, I could make a call. Probably to Black Squadron, I thought with a half laugh. Not that they were all that friendly to start with, but I wondered what was setting the Gastronovians like this? * * * Lucian "Lieutenant Amy, known you are among the Frodarian people, with both kindness and hatred," said the woman. "Excuse me, but it's Captain Amy. Do you folks prefer 'Frodarian' or 'Gastronovian', because I've heard you called both," said Amy. The woman glared at her briefly before replying, as if seeing if there was malice in Amy's question. She said, "My pardon on your rank, Captain. I had not heard of a promotion. Regarding your question, Frodarians are we, from our planet, AND GastONovians, from the ship on which we traveled for so many yahrens. Those aboard the Callisto who use the term GastROnovian for us usually use the term with derision." Struggling briefly with the Colonial syntax, she continued, "I do not think that was your intent in this case, so I will let it pass without insult...this time. Come..." * * * Brie After Brie's meeting with Skyler, Justin requested a meeting with her. She also had two messages from Lieutenant Marcus. There was no way that Marcus, in his happiness, could realize what an incredibly bad mood Brie was in. It might have shown a bit in her tome but it didn't change what she had to tell him. She sent him back the following message: Lieutenant Marcus, I appreciate you wanting larger quarters. But this is a military vessel. It is not a cruise ship. Nor is it likely to become one in the near future. We are overloaded with Gastronovian refugees, and we have little space and even less supplies. I can transfer you over to the quarters used for sealed warriors, and you can have a cubicle there. That is the best I can do. I would suggest that you put your names on the waiting list, and maybe once we rejoin the fleet something larger might open up for you. As far as the furlon is concerned, I can grant one (without pay) for you but not for Captain Stadia. Lately she left the sick bay without permission, took a viper also without permission, and was late to a mandatory meeting. Her lack of respect has gotten her grounded and her pay docked. If I were to reward her for this, what would the other members of the squadron think? Because of her actions she is not currently on active duty, but an official furlon is out of the question. Please remember what I said during the Gold Squadron meeting, you’re a warrior first, anything else has to come second. While I’m happy for you and wish you a life full of joy, please don’t expect me to rearrange the squadron for you. If you have problems with any of this you can take it directly to Commander Sheba, but I fully expect her to back up my decisions. Major Brie * * * Marcus I sent a message back to Major Brie. Thank you ma'am' for getting back to me. The furlon with out pay is fine and the cube in the sealed warriors is just fine. I do not expect for you to rearange the squadron nor do I expect special treatment in this matter. Thank you again for getting back to me on this. I know you are a busy person and I thank you for your time. LT.Marcus * * * Brie Brie looked at a very nervous Killjoy. She had just bared her soul to Captain Skyler, told him things that she never thought would leave her lips, Killjoy was the last thing that she wanted to deal with at the moment. “Before you say one word, Lieutenant,” Brie said with a bit of impatience in her voice, “I have two questions for you. Number one, do you know the meaning of the word ‘classified?’ I’m assuming that you do, since I happened to notice that there’s a classified section on your file as well. But, unlike other people, I decided not to see what it said, because quite honestly I don’t give a frack. I also happen to realize that almost everyone in the Colonial Service has things in their file that is classified, because medical records are sealed on a need-to-know basis. And just in case you’re curious, my file pertains to a former medical problem, not that it’s any of your business.” She stopped and took a breath, but didn’t give Killjoy a chance to answer. “Question number two,” she continued, “Why me? ?” * * *

JustinB Just standing outside Major Brie's office I could feel the tension from inside. After a micron of silence, Brie started with her interrogation. I hoped she would give him a chance to tell his side of the story. On the other hand, I prayed that Killjoy would be tactful and just tell the truth and not let his anger get the better of him. Well, only time will tell I thought to myself. * * * Killjoy “Before you say one word, Lieutenant,” Brie said with a bit of impatience in her voice, “I have two questions for you. “Question number two,” she continued, “Why me?"
Killjoy glanced toward the terminal on a table behind Brie's desk. He noticed she had indeed been taking a look at his files and there was a Red Classified tag flashing at the bottom requesting an authorization code. Despite what she had said about not caring what was in there, she was at least curious.
"Well Major, Permission to speak freely."
"By all means Lieutenant, I can't wait to hear it!"
Killjoy felt obliged to be a bit more arrogant in his actions and words. The gloves were off and he wasn’t going down without a fight this time. He strolled over to a chair near the door keeping a good deal of space between himself and the Major, and sat down. He wanted her to know he saw her terminal and knew that she had been looking into him. He ignored her first question as well.
"Well Major, I don’t have anything to hide from you or anyone else on this bird. The felgercarb in the sealed section of my file is easy to explain. I was one of the teenagers that were taken from the Fermise back when she was an orphan ship. I'm sure you know about the kinds of thing we went through. Being poked and probed and having our genetic structure altered so we could become one man's view of perfect and superior human beings. Be sure to ask the Doc about it Major. I'll tell her to clue you in on all my cute little alterations. Better yet, just type Delta 1597 Beta into that terminal, then you can see what I'm talking about for yourself. After all you went that far, might as well go all the way right?"
Brie looked quickly at the terminal and then back at Killjoy. "How the frack did you read that from over there, there is now way anyone"….
Killjoy held up his hand to cut her off and then pointed to his eyes.
"Like I said Major, read it. Thanks to a group of doctors, I'm a little different than some people. Now to answer you second question. I thought you were someone I once knew Major. A girl who was with me during the experiments. We were very close and helped each other get through that nightmare. After the authorities put at end to things and sent me back to the Fermise, I lost track of her with out telling her something very important, Major. And when I met you and began to think you could be her I became obsessed with it again. You have the same eyes, hair color the age is about right best I can remember. I really thought you could be her. You know many of the teenagers changed their names when they were adopted. I mean you don’t think my mother named Me Killjoy do ya? But I know now that you are not the girl Im looking for. And I apologize for the thing with the file, but I had to know for sure."
Again Killjoy paused to take in the Major's expression, and again there wasn’t a measurable response. Now he was certain Brie wasn’t who he thought she was. So he stood up and moved toward the door and turned to face her. Stood at attention, Saluted and spoke.
"Permission to leave Major?"
Brie stood up and started to return the Lieutenant's salute but hesitated.
"One more question Killjoy, What was so important you would risk inprisionment in order to find this girl, what didn’t you get to tell her?"
"Major, I never got to tell her that I was in love with her." He then stood there and waited for the Major to return the salute. * * * Brie "Major, I never got to tell her that I was in love with her." He then stood there and waited for the Major to return the salute.
Brie hesitated. There was one more thing she wanted to say. “Lieutenant, if there’s ever anything you want to know about me or anyone else for that matter, next time just ask. It would be a whole lot easier for everyone. Understood?”
Killjoy nodded and Brie returned his salute. She was glad to see him go. She believed part of his story, but still wasn’t sure if he was part of a conspiracy. She hadn’t told him that the reason his file was on her terminal when he arrived wasn’t because she had been reading it, but because she was looking for Sheba’s tag to see how far Skyler had gotten. No sense in letting him know that someone else was checking out his background.
The frustration began to grow inside of Brie. There was someone else trying to find out information on her. Why? She kicked her bookcase, not noticing the small metal object that had suddenly come loose. * * *

Marcus Stadia nervously applied makeup to her face. She, after much effort, got it to where she liked it. She turned to where her mothers dress hung. Stadia's eyes traced the pattern of the beadwork along the hem of the dress. It was one of the things her mother had made sure she had when she transferred to the Callisto after her initial training. It seemed prophetic. She knew they were going to be torn apart.
Just then Amy knocked on the door and stuck her head in. "Ready to get dressed?" I looked at her as I gave her a nervous smile. I stood up and took the dress down. It was a white satin dress with beads sewn all around it with satin ribbon. "My mother would sew on this every free moment she could when I was to be sealed before. She made sure I took it with me when I was sent to the Callisto." Stadia slipped the buttons free making room for her to slip it over her head. Amy took the dress and carefully helped slip it over my head. When it was on, she carefully secured the buttons into place.
"You look beautiful Stadia."
"Thank you. Do you think you and Charybdis will ever get sealed?"
"I don't want to talk about that. This is your day and I don't want to ruin it."
Amy reached up and adjusted a curl of hair over my shoulder. Stadia reached down and grabbed the veil and some bobby pins. With Amy's help, she fastened the rose colored veil to her hair. She then reached down and grabbed her gloves, slipping them on over her fingers up to her elbows.
Amy asked. "Shall we get this show on the road?"
Amy opened the door as they headed to the door of the Officers Club. * * * Standing in the officers club in front of a window with the stars to shine down upon this union between Marcus and Stadia. All the invited guests had gathered around to watch this union of two hearts made into one.
I stood in my dress uniform waiting nerviously for Stadia to come through the doors. Artus stood next to me also in his dress uniform said "Calm down Marcus she will be here soon." "Thanks Artus for being my best man." Artus put a hand upon my sholder to help calm me "Your welcome." This helped to calm me down a little.
As Amy and Stadia reached the O club, Major Lucian was standing there in his dress uniform. He took one look at her and said, "You look stunning!" Stadia smiled and took his arm. The doors opened and Amy entered the club first. Everyone turned to watch her enter. The soft melodic strains of music guiding her every step. She stood across from Artus and turned to watch.
The doors opened and Stadia entered on the arm of Major Lucian. I took one look at her and saw the most beautiful woman that I have ever seen in my life. I thought I was looking at an angel. I started to get nervous again so her smile was the only thing I could focus on to help calm my nerves.
They walked up to where Marcus stood waiting. Major Lucian offered Marcus Stadia's hand and then stepped back to wait for his part in the ceremony. Stadia turned and gave her bouquet of white and yellow roses to Amy to hold. She turned back to Marcus to look into his blue eyes and Marcus looked into her green eyes.
Holding hands while smiling at each other our hearts filled with happiness for this was the day we were to be sealed. Stadia let a tear of happiness slip down her cheek.
Sheba spoke "It is my distinct honor to be here to join these two as they embark on a journey filled with love and trust. This journey is one not always filled with joy but of sadness, sorrow, and pain but it is a journey more easily dealt with when two people who love each other face it together. This sealing represents the start of that journey and the commitment Stadia and Marcus have chosen to make..."
Stadia barely heard the words for she was lost in Marcus. Her hand rubbed up and down his hand trying to dispel her nerves. He gently held her hand to reasure her.
Sheba turned to Major Lucian "Will the protector of Stadia consent to releasing his responsibilities to Marcus for whom she is to be married."
Major Lucian said "Yes I do consent to releasing my responsibilities to Marcus." * * * Sheba continued "Join us as we share in the promises they have come to make before the Lords of Kobol and the assembled crowd."
"Marcus, do you promise to take Stadia in good times and in bad, sickness and in health, for richer or poorer until death do you part?"
Marcus smiles, "I do, most definitely!"
Everyone laughed at his words. Marcus blushed at this but, kepted looking at her.
"Then place the ring upon her finger.' Artus hands the ring to Marcus. Stadia removes her glove then Marucs gently places the ring upon her finger.
"Stadia, do you promise to take Marcus in good times and in bad, sickness and in health, for richer or poorer until death do you part?"
Stadia smiles at him, "Yes with all my heart I do"
"Then place the ring upon his finger." Stadia gently places the ring upon his finger.
Sheba binds their hands with the medalion of the lords of Kobal "Under the eyes of god and bound by the symbol and the faiths of the lords of Kobal I now declare you sealed."
With tears of joy in his eyes Marcus kisses Stadia tenderly upon the lips. "I love you my beautiful wife." Stadia looks to him with tears of joy in her eyes "I love you my husband."
The gathered guests cheered for the newly sealed couple. * * * Lucian Lucian, believing he had completed his part in the ceremony without making too much of a mess of it, stepped back to watch the ceremony. For a few moments, his mind wandered to the past, when Stadia and he had been working together quite closely. He briefly thought of the few moments when their paths crossed romantically...before he pushed her away. She had been badly hurt at the time, to the point of leaving Black Squadron for Gold, but Lucian knew that he had done the right thing, for both of them. Knowing Stadia so well, he silently wished the couple much happiness and few tears. The image of the happy couple in front of the assembled crowd swam in front of him.
Sheba's voice again grabbed his attention, and he glanced at his chrono. The ceremony would be over shortly, and the Callisto would be making final preparations for arrival in the Vossar system. * * * Marcus As the ceremony neared the end there was one more important thing left to do before the reception, the throwing of the bouquet.
All of the females who wanted to participate gathered around as Stadia turned around to throw the bouquet. She threw the bouquet into the air.
It sailed into the air and started its decent waiting for the lucky girl to catch it.
Who would it be? * * *

Artus Standing in the officers club in front of a window with the stars to shine down upon this union between Marcus and Stadia. All the invited guests had gathered around to watch this union of two hearts made into one.
Artus couldn't help but think of one thing. Well, maybe a few things. Maybe a whole lot of things. Maybe not. The thought foremost in his mind was however, that he had finally made it to the o-club and still couldn't get a drink.
------------------------------------------------------------
Marcus stood in his dress uniform waiting nerviously for Stadia to come through the doors. Artus stood next to him also in his dress uniform said "Calm down Marcus she will be here soon." "Thanks Artus for being my best man." Artus put a hand upon his sholder to help calm me "Your welcome." This helped to calm him down a little.
And all the wile Artus was thinking; How did this all happen so soon? I'm out of it for just a bit and these two get sealed? I still remember Marcus being a wreckless young ensign walking in on me and Amy during a particularily daring game of cards. And I remember thinking Stadia was some cold heartless pregnant dog. As a matter of fact I think I still do. A little. But I won't tell Marcus, because she seems to make him happy. Somehow.... Boy this dress uniform is itchy.
------------------------------------------------------------
The doors opened and Amy entered the club first. Everyone turned to watch her enter. The soft melodic strains of music guiding her every step. She stood across from Artus and turned to watch.
And all Artus was thinking about was how to talk her out of that dress.....
The doors opened and Stadia entered on the arm of Major Lucian. Marcus took one look at her and saw the most beautiful woman that he had ever seen in his life. He thought he was looking at an angel. He started to get nervous again so her smile was the only thing he could focus on to help calm my nerves.
A young ensign leaned over to Artus and whispered;
"You seem to have trouble keeping your eyes dry, lieutenant?"
To wich Artus swiftly whispered response was;
"The only problem I have is that my glass is still dry.."
Holding hands while smiling at each other their hearts filled with happiness for this was the day we were to be sealed. Stadia let a tear of happiness slip down her cheek.
"Oh no!" thought Artus; "She's melting! The Ice Queen is melting!"
Major Lucian said "Yes I do consent to releasing my responsibilities to Marcus."
"He's just glad to be rid of her" thought Artus. * * * Sheba continued "Join us as we share in the promises they have come to make before the Lords of Kobol and the assembled crowd."
"I really need a drink right about now." Artus thought. At the same time he looked over at Amy. She seemed absent minded as well. Could she be thinking about him too? Then again, it almost looked like she was on a completely different part of the ship. ____________________________________________________________
"Marcus, do you promise to take Stadia in good times and in bad, sickness and in health, for richer or poorer until death do you part?"
"Oh no, " thought Artus; "they are about to call for the rings. Where the frack did I leave that thing?"
Marcus smiles, "I do, most definitely!"
Artus was still feeling through his pockets. There, he had the thing. Thank the Lords of Kobol!
Everyone laughed at something Marcus had said.Marcus blushed at this but, kepted looking at Stadia.
Stadia smiles at him, "Yes with all my heart I do"
Artus kept thinking; "Oof, if smiles could kill.."
"Then place the ring upon his finger." Stadia gently places the ring upon his finger.
Sheba binds their hands with the medalion of the lords of Kobal "Under the eyes of god and bound by the symbol and the faiths of the lords of Kobal I now declare you sealed."
Artus kept silent but thought; "Oh, well, there goes another fine warrior down the drain.."
With tears of joy in his eyes Marcus kisses Stadia tenderly upon the lips. "I love you my beautiful wife." Stadia looks to him with tears of joy in her eyes "I love you my husband."
"And I would love a drink right now." Artus thought.
The gathered guests cheered for the newly sealed couple.
Artus cheered very loudly, three times. And then slipped over to the bar. * * * As Artus walked over to the bar, he suddenly remembered something.
He was Marcus' best man after all, so he had better come up with some kind of speech.
He turned to all the invited guests
"Ahem, I believe it would be customary for me to say a few words at this point. So, not being one to break with tradition, I will attempt to do so. When I first met Marcus he was an eager young ensign, hoping to prove himself to the rest of his newfound squadron. At that moment we were waiting to see if we could assist the rest of our troubled crewmates. It later turned out that they needed no rescue, but under the valliant command of captain Amy we went to rescue them anyway. It was during this mission that the two lovebirds met. My first impression of captain Stadia was not a very good one. I believe I called her Ice Queen, a nickname Marcus has made me promise to refrain from further use. So from now on I vouch I will not call her that again. In public, that is. Anyway, both Marcus and Stadia proved their skills as a pilot during this mission, and I believe Marcus proved even more. This judging from the fact that captain Amy thought it best to bring him to keep her warm in the snow, while I was stuck in the shuttle. After a few skirmishes with some tin-heads we headed back from the planet and it was then that Marcus truly showed his piloting skill. It is thanks to him that we are still alive here and I am actually capable of boring you all with this longwinded speech. But to conclude, Marcus and Stadia, I wish you all the happiness in the universe and may the Lords of Kobol smile upon your every day." * * *

Marcus Artus was just finishing up his speech “It is thanks to him that we are still alive here and I am actually capable of boring you all with this longwinded speech. But to conclude, Marcus and Stadia, I wish you all the happiness in the universe and may the Lords of Kobol smile upon your every day.”
I spoke "Thank you Artus. Don’t forget it is also thanks to you and Amy that also got us back. So don’t just blame me for the longwinded speech" I smile at him "I would like to take the time to say a big THANK YOU to Amy and Artus for being our friends." "THANK YOU to the both of you. Now go and have fun." * * * The guests gathered at the reception for food, fun, dancing, and drink. Marcus and Stadia sat at the table holding hands surrounded by their friends. Both looked at each other with happiness in their hearts. Now their life together had begun. After the reception they would head to their new quarters and some private time together. They would get three days alone to spend in each others arms.
After the reception was over and the guests had departed we left the officers club and headed for our new quarters in the sealed warrior’s area. It was not too big but that was all we needed for now. Tomorrow we would add our names to the list for larger quarters for when they came available.
We arrived at our new place and I turned to Stadia "You know it is tradition to carry the bride across the threshold." I lovingly smiled at her then opened the door. I turned to her and swept her off her feet as a thrilled breath escaped from her. A smile came across her face as I carried her into our new place. We proceed to undress each other being careful not to tear the dress. I kissed Stadia deeply upon the lips. "I love you Stadia with all my heart. Together we can now make those dreams of ours come true." * * *

Skyler Col. Charybdis had ordered me to perform a back ground check on Lt. Killjoy. He was even nice enough to get a set of special codes from Commander Sheba that would aid me in digging around in the files. They would allow me access to areas my own clearance codes wouldn't allow me to go, but they also left marker tags everywhere they are used, so they can be tracked easier.
Killjoy's file flashed on the screen. Basic information about his most recent duties etc. flashed first. Digging deeper, Father: unknown mother: deceased siblings: half brother, deceased, raised: orphan ship.
So far his life was like so many thousands of others. Then it started getting weird. He was part of a research project. The details were sealed in a medical section. Making a mental note to look into that further, Skyler kept scrolling down. He was adopted by a man named Tabor, who was now dead. Killjoy learned his pilot skills with him flying shuttles and took over the business after Tabor's death. He started moving some black market items, and got mixed up with a group called the 'Sorayama Organization'. Another mental note to research them as well.
His academy service record was almost spotless, some misuse of communications equipment was about it. A few notes from the trainers at the academy, which as far as Skyler could tell were the standard dribble the like to post. He thought about looking into his record to see what they had said about him, but decided against it. Not only would it be abusing the codes Charybdis had gotten for him, but he didn't really want to know how bad the instructors had judged him.
The record listed his last assignments, patrols, etc.
Skyler noted the lack of medical records in the file. It appeared Killjoy had been very successful at avoiding med. lab. The one time he did get put in med. lab, he just walked out. Then the file listed the tampering with Brie's file and the punitive actions taken.
Not allot to go on yet, but the computers had just stared gathering all known information on the 'Sorayama Organization' and the medical files would be next, if Charybdis wanted to go that route. * * * JustinB The opening of Major Brie startled me. The look on Killjoys face told me a few things. One he finally got what he wanted to say to Brie off his chest and two he was still in two minds about whether to resign. We talked a little as walked back to the Black Squadron barracks.
Seeing him down a little, I turned to him and said, "I know you won't want to go to the wedding, so let’s just grab some food and drink and have a few hands of cards and maybe a fumarello or two."
"Sounds good to me JustinB because I am pretty hungry," he said sounding happier, "plus I could do with your Sectars pay if I am too find a woman to love."
Placing my hand on his shoulder I said with a smile, "Well then let's go then." * * * BSBRose Rose had barely made it to the sealing of Marcus and Stadia in time to watch the two of them be sealed to one another. While she had listened to the words that were being spoken, Rose day dreamed of the day when she would be sealed to JustinB. She hoped that day would come, but wasn't about to push the subject with JustinB. Rose did want things to move to the next level with JustinB though and wondered how to go about that. She didn't want to seem to pushy and she didn't want to scare off JustinB either. When the sealing of Marcus and Stadia concluded, Rose left and started wondering around the corridors some needing some time to think. Rose had hoped to see JustinB at the sealing, but didn't see him there at all and hoped that he was alright. She hadn't seen much of him recently and wanted to spend a little time with him.
Rose continued to wonder around the corridors some as she continued to think about her relationship with JustinB. As she continued to walk around some, Rose hears a familiar voice over in the next corridor. She speeds up a little and peers around the corner to see JustinB talking with Killjoy. Rose decides to follow them to see where they end up going to get eat and play cards. She had a feeling that it might be the O'Club, but wasn't sure if that was where they were headed or not. * * * Randrius Randrius fists pummeled the work-out dummy, each blow leaving a momentary dent in the mallable material. The dummy, roughly the size of an extremely corpulant man, stuck on a flexible rod that bobbed backwards at every impact. Randrius leaped around to another side of the dummy, and cought it in side of the head with a vicious kick. Randrius was frustrated, there was a lot of strange things going on around here, lots of things he didn't know about, secrets and deception. He was good at sensing such things in people. He knew that Killjoy hadn't truly commited the hacking crimes he had heard about. He had seen Brie, she was still very uptight, her body language broadcasted that clear enough. Who could have done the crimes? People with the technical skills of the caliber necessary for the task of hacking through the military-grade security on the Callisto computers were few and far between. He hated mysteries such as this, he had heard that there was several officer that were aware of the problem that were worried about the safety of there own confidential files. He wasn't worried, all they had on him were a few med records and a couple of disciplinary reprimands. He had not been on the Callisto for most of his career and all the things he would rather forget were lost in the explosion of his old groups freighter, the Cutthroat. Randrius redoubled his efforts to dismantle the dummy, his blows becoming more focused and furious. Though the dummy was durable, it did have its limits. After several minutes of raging blow, the dummy gave way, a blast from Randrius' foot blowing the unfortunate dummy in half. Randrius stopped and his arms dropped to his side, there was blood leaking from his scarred knuckles. He sighed and headed for the turbo-wash. He hated secracy, perhaps he could go have a drink at the O-club and catch up on the times and perhaps hit the sims after that, he still needed some work to complete his certification for shuttle pilot.
After a good turbowash, Randrius headed down to the O-club. He ran into Killjoy and Justin at the door-way. "Hey, mind if I join you guys?" * * *
