I have to admit that I was slightly confused when I first read this, because we've always used Nova Yahren as a replacement birthday, but then I realized what you were saying. I'm a little slow sometimes, especially before my coffee. Anyway, Happy New Year from me as well!

Sorry about the confusion. I've read quite a bit of fan fiction for the series and had noticed that Natal Day was used quite a lot to celebrate birthdays. I don't recall if they ever used Nova Yahren or Natal Day in the series. Anyone know? Going to look that up.

I know you meant no confusion. I just said something because A) I thought a couple of other oldtimers like me might be confused and B) (more importantly)...I have a very big mouth. I also C) hated seeing your post with no replies, because it was really nice of you to say what you did.
We've always used nova yahren for birthday. (I never heard the term Natal Day until a few weeks ago.) I don't think nova yahren was ever used in TOS, in fact Boomer uses the word "birthday" in Fire in Space. But nova yahren either comes from the early Richard Hatch books (which is what our story is very loosely based on) or someone just started using it because it sounded cool. But we don't get too hung up on terms around here. As long as what is written makes sense, the terminology doesn't matter too much.

I believe Nova yahren could be used for both birthday and new year as the term translate as simply "new year". We begin a new year with a birthday, and I've also been using the term of nova yahren for the beginning of new calender year on my forum too. Confusing you say? what about how they used senton to mean a day, and then used centon to mean a minute...the only difference being the beginning letter to the terms.
LOL!!!
Happy Nova Yahren fellow Callistoans!!!

Time units from TOS...what a headache! I'm still trying to figure out about the waiter on the Rising Star, who talks about the way things were before the war. A thousand yahren war...how old does that make him??
Anyway, just for everyone's general information, what we've used for the RPG is pretty much as follows. Remember, we've all made mistakes, so if you didn't follow this exactly in a post don't worry about it! And knowing me, I'll make a mistake or leave something out now. And it's been a long time since I've RPGed, so I might be rusty and my spelling might be off. Please, especially those who have been around for a long time, feel free to make any corrections. And remember, these are rough approximations.
Second-micron
Minute-centon
Hour-centar
Cycle-1/3 of a day. Three cycles make a day. (Some people have used cycle for a full day, that's fine too.)
Night time-light cycle
Secton-week
Sectar-month
Yahren-year
Oops, I switched around the order, didn't I? Sorry about that.
I know that some of these may not be what's used in other fanfic or even in the series, but we kind of came up with the general meanings for continuity. If you're not sure what to use, feel free to in your post write something like "He waited a secton (week) for his paycheck."
Then again, I'm not RPGing anymore, so don't listen to me.

True, it's been posted, and a very useful and interesting list it is. My point, though, is that in some cases we've kind of just played it by ear, or even made it up as we went along. It may not be on that list, or it may be different than what's there. (How many times have we used "SPERMAL GOAD", for instance?) As long as what you post makes sense, don't get too caught up in the terminology. If your character wants a burger and fries with ketchup, don't worry about looking for the Colonial equivalent.
Wow, this has gone off of the original topic. I hope everyone is having a great 2009!

Spermal Goad...... ok, I haven't looked at the list in a while, but I will have to try to work that one into conversation the next time I post.....
Agree, Great 2009 to everyone......

Skyler, I will DEFINITELY look forward to that post. Spermal Goad...sounds like something they'd grow on the Agro Ship. "I'd like a veggie burger with an order of spermal goad on the side..." I don't think so, I'll just take the veggie burger. For anyone who wants to know what Spermal Goad REALLY means, use the link that Hawke posted. There's some really interesting stuff there.
