Brie was told that it was going to be a few centons, so she asked the receptionist for permission to use a computer. She sent a request that Adara be allowed to become the children's fulltime, live-in nanny. Brie wasn't sure why she had instantly liked the young woman, or trusted her with her daughters. It was the first time since they had been born that Brie hadn't been within arms reach. It felt strange.
Before too long Brie was led back to an office. She had expected the normal psychological tests. She could pass…or fail if need be…those in her sleep. Instead, a man in a white lab coat entered the room. He was in his mid-50's, with thinning, gray hair. He was on the tall side, and slender. "I'm Dr. Tait," he said, extending his hand.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Brie," she said, shaking his hand. For some reason, she didn't give her rank.
"Please, have a seat." Brie sat, as Dr. Tait sat behind the desk.
"So…" Brie started slowly. "Where do we start? Ink blots? Word association?"
Dr. Tait smiled. "No, I just thought we'd talk. Welcome back, by the way. You're return is quite miraculous."
Brie shook her head. "It shouldn't have been. They searched in the right area, just not close enough."
"How does that make you feel?"
Brie grinned. "Oh, it's going to be one of THOSE exams. I'll admit it, I've been angry since I returned. I understand about people being left behind; I even left my own daughter behind once, but that was because of an immediate threat to the rest of my team, and ultimately the fleet. This…there was no threat in the area. They just got bored, and left the system. If they had searched for another cycle, they would have found me. But hey, it's all part of a warrior's life, right? Although I wasn't supposed to be an active warrior anymore, I was supposed be taking over the Callisto Training Academy. I was supposed to be out of immediate danger, but still I was left behind. After all I've done for them. And now, I'm being kept under guard. I know it's procedure, but there are exceptions to every rule."
"I've read your file," Dr. Tait commented. "You've had quite an illustrious career. You have done a lot for our people."
"Yeah, including being tried and convicted of a crime that never even happened," Brie said. "Do you have any idea how embarrassing it is to be shown shackled on IFB? I had no idea that Apollo had a plan in all of it, and even then I volunteered to have Master Pierce kill me." Brie sighed. "I'm sorry, I guess I've just had a lot of time to think."
"I hear that you're a new mother," Dr. Tait said, looking at his notes.
Brie smiled. "Yeah, two precious baby girls. I gave my firstborn up for adoption, so this is a chance to do things right."
"Tell me about their father."
"What's to tell?" Brie asked. "That was another one of the things that I had a lot of time to think about. I rushed into a relationship, and did things that I normally wouldn't have done. I'm not the type of person who usually will allow myself to get caught up in the moment, but for some reason I did. Never again."
"You seem to have some hostility towards him," Dr. Tait said.
Brie grinned again. For the second time she wasn't sure why, but she also like the doctor. "Yup. It was made worse when I found out that he went through my personal effects after my accident. Okay, I could almost understand that eventually, but the search was still on. I hadn't even been declared dead yet, and he's going through my stuff! Nice to know he was overcome with grief."
"Has he contacted you since your return?" Dr. Tait asked.
"No," Brie said. "Not a word. I know that it hasn't been made public yet, but I also know how this ship works. News has spread across the whole Battlestar, I'm sure of it."
"Are you sure he's on the Callisto?"
Brie thought for a moment. "Commander Sheba knew of our involvement, as did several other people. If he were off-ship, someone would have told me."
Dr. Tait's comm buzzed. "Doctor," a female voice said, "they're requesting Major Brie's presence in the War Room. With your approval, of course."
Pressing a button, Dr. Tait replied, "Let them know that she has it, everything has checked out." He looked again at Brie. "We're all finished. Although, if you'd like to talk sometime, I'm here." He stood up and held out his hand again.
Brie took it and smiled. "I just might take you up on that."
