Abby entered the doctor's office, and the doctor stood up, offering the chair on the other side of the desk for her to sit down. She sat down, grateful to be off her feet again.
"Did you find something to eat?" the doctor asked.
Abby nodded. "I got ahold of the agro ship too. Things are pretty much in chaos over there. I'm going to have to shuttle over there, very soon. I won't be gone long, but they need a little hands-on help. Lords help me, I need about three of me right now. It's just too much." She looked at the doctor, noticing that he seemed a little uncomfortable. "Is everything in order for the donorship?" she asked. "I came as soon as I heard you wanted to see me."
"We had a little false alarm with your daughter, so I'm sorry if the call for you sounded urgent."
"False alarm...?"
The doctor squirmed a little. "Yes. During the physical your daughter tested positive as being pregnant."
"Pregnant!"
"But it was a false positive. She's not, I assure you, though it did cause us some anxious moments." The doctor reached for some documents, wanting to change the subject. "We should be able to begin the organ transplants as soon as..."
Abby interrupted him. "You know something doctor? I'm not assured. I'm sitting here very uneasy at the moment. How do I know that everything else you've said about my daughter is correct when you can't run a simple pregnancy test?"
"I assure you..."
"Don't assure me" Abby snapped.
"I understand your concern" the doctor replied, "but everything else has been verified. I stand by the conclusions we've made concerning your daughter." He was defensive, yet firmly insistant.
"I'm not so sure" Abby said, not convinced at all with what the doctor was saying. "I don't think I want to sign anything else until I return."
"Abby, be reasonable" the doctor said, trying to calm her down. "You'd be risking the lives of people in dire need of transplants..."
"And right now I feel like I'm risking my daughter just having her in your care." Abby was the one being insistant now. "In fact, I want someone else in charge of this case."
The doctor winced, taking a deep breath. This wasn't going well at all. "As you must know, we are overburdened here as it is. It isn't that easy to pass a case over to another doctor."
"I can wait. Under no circumstances is my daughter to be touched until I get back. Are we clear?"
The doctor nodded. "As you wish, but please understand. I felt I had to tell you about the false positive, but I never intended to cast our staff in a bad light. I'm sorry to have upset you further in what already is a trying time. I'll do my best to have another doctor take over your case as soon as possible."
Abby's expression softened slightly, but she remained firm. "Thank you. But you understand as well. I wouldn't be able to live with any doubts. Amy is all I have left..." Now the grief was beginning to rise to the surface.
"I understand" the doctor said softly. "I understand." He sat back, wondering if Fallel was having any luck with the discs and the idea they spoke about. If it worked, he might just have to remove all the loose objects from the room before telling Abby...
