Rogue One, the first "standalone" Star Wars movie, is set for preview release this Thursday, 12/15, with general release on Friday, 12/16/16. The premiere was this past Saturday night. While reviews are embargoed until at least 12/13/16, the news on social media from those in attendance was supposedly very positive, including from writer/director/actor Kevin Smith, who said on his Twitter feed:
"Holy Sith! @rogueonemovie is unbelievably wonderful! No lie: it is #EmpireStrikesBack great! An excellent chapter in the @starwars Universe!"
Feel free to post your thoughts here, but please indicate SPOILERS before spilling the beans on anything that might be a major plot point (at least for a few weeks so everyone can go see it). Thanks!
Now, I've got to see about getting tickets!

It's December 13 and the embargo is lifted, initial reviews are now being released!
As with any much loved movie franchise getting a new installment, they're a little mixed since you can never please everyone. If you do decide to read any reviews before making your way to the movie theater to see "Rogue One," you may want to read cautiously to avoid spoilers. I skimmed three reviews to get the overall feel without getting into too many details. Two of the three were positive, while one seemed to think it is too much of a retread that could have been done better by 9-year olds with Lego pieces. Therefore, I've closed out the reviews and will check back in a week or two from now after I've been able to go see it to give my personal (hopefully mostly spoiler free!) opinion.

The initial screenings have taken place and I'm hearing generally good reviews from people (not critics) who've seen the movie. It currently has an 85% rating at Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.3 at IMDB.com. We'd love to have some members stop in and express your spoiler free opinions after you've seen it.

I saw it on the first Saturday and was not sure what to expect, but I have to tell you: it is intense!!! Overall, I liked it. You can feel for the characters and they fit in perfectly with the universe that has come before it.
The storytelling style is a bit fast and "modern" if you will (stormtroopers flying after explosions and all that) but it was a great fun for my money! I have not had time to go back and see it again but I certainly want to!
I have heard that the DVD will be in late April around the 28th...
If you are a Star Wars fan, go see it!

I agree completely, Colonel, and it looks like people are still going to see it. As of January 29, the domestic take is now at $520 million and the international gross is up to $510 million. That totals to over $1.03 billion so far.

Yeah I read that only three Star Wars movies have made over 1 billion at the worldwide box office, Ep. I, Ep. VII and Rogue One...I guess that purchase is paying off for Disney!

Today is the day! Release date for the Rogue One DVD/BluRay combo is April 4th. Got mine this morning. I will be teaching my bi-annual Star Wars class this fall and I am already including Ep. VII and Rogue One in the screenings. Will be really cool since at the end of the class in early December, it will be only another week until Ep. VIII is released. I'm secretly trying to create more Star Wars fans!!!
