I arrived shortly after the top of the centar to check in with MedLab and see how our patients were doing. Doc BKJ saw me and came out to greet me. "Colonel, good to see you back onboard the Callisto," she said.
"THanks, Doc. It's good to be back. But it's even better news that Brie and Amy are coming around."
"Well, in Brie's case, she's doing better than expected. But with Amy, she's still in very guarded condition."
"Can I see either of them?" I asked.
"Unfortunately, Amy is still restricted for visitors by her mother. I hope you understand. And right now, Major Brie is in with Cpt. Skyler. I"m not sure I would want you to see her though, remember what happened last time?" She shot me a glance with a raised eyebrow.
I rememberd. Brie went into cardiac arrest!
"Well, at least let them know I was here and that I wanted to see them. I'll be in my temporary quarters if anything changes. I want them to get better. I'll do whatever I can to help."
"I'll let them know, Colonel," BKJ answered.
I turned and left for my temporary quarters. I had not been told anything about the situation and why I was still in these quarters. I wonder if that had anything to do with Urdea meeting me in the landing bay?

The more Ange thought about it, the more he felt the overwhelming need to get back to the Agro ship. It was his job for one thing, and he wasn't doing anybody any good here. No matter what his feelings were for Amy, he wasn't helping matters hanging around. His justification for being here was as part of the group that saved the agro ship from that lunatic Pierce, and now it was time to get back.
He thought more and more about Em too. Something wasn't right there. More was going on than he at first realized. He couldn't help but feel that Em was playing him, using him somehow, and he didn't like that feeling. Em had too much power over him, knowing what she does about what he did to Amy. She said the proof was gone, but how could he be sure of that? And why was Em so concerned about Amy being on a donor list?
Yes, it was time to get back to the Agro ship.
* * *
After confronting Ange, Abby had gone to the waiting room in medlab to pull herself together. She'd sat for a little while, clearing her head, then she'd poured some coffee from a small pot that had sat a little longer that it should have. The coffee was slightly bitter, but it's strong taste felt good going down. She was pulling out a fumerette when a nurse suddenly appeared in the doorway.
"There you are!" she said excitedly. "Come quick! Amy's talking! Your daughter is talking!

Abby came into Amy's room, her eyes widening with surprise. Two nurses were struggling with Amy, holding her arms, trying to settle her down. A third nurse was preparing a shot.
"Lazant!" Amy was shouting. "Look out!" Her eyes were clenched shut tightly, and she fought mightily against the nurses.
"By the lords!" Abby yelled, rushing up and in between the doctor and her daughter's bedside. "What's wrong?"
"We thought she knew where she was" the doctor said, "but then she started yelling..."
"Amy! Amy" Abby yelled out, grabbing her daughter's shoulders. "You're home! It's over! It's all over! Listen to me, you're home!"
Amy stopped fighting the nurses. Her eyes opened, took time to focus, and then a look of recognition passed over her face. Abby burst into tears as Amy said "Mom?"

Ange left word with Urdea's office that he planned to take the next shuttle back to the Agro ship. He indicated that he'd be in touch once he returned to his office and saw what sort of shape Agro security was in. He wasn't sure how many men had been Pierce followers, and he might need some help setting things back up. He might even end up in charge, seeing that his chief and the number two man were traitors and had followed Pierce's suicide command.
He shook his head at the thought of it. And of Em. What was going on in her head? So close to turning his life completely around, and the past just wouldn't go away. Not that he'd changed all that much, but his work might actually be rewarding for a change. It hadn't been that way since his days as a warrior.
He walked up the shuttle ramp, showed his I.D., and entered. "Ten microns to launch, sir" an attendant informed him.
* * * "Mom" Amy repeated. "Mom... mom..." She shook loose from the hold the nurses had on her and wrapped her arms around Abby, pulling her close. "Mom..."
Abby smiled through her tears. "I'm here, baby. I'm here. Everything is alright now. You are home."
"On... the agroship?"
"Medlab" Abby replied. "On the Callisto." She pulled free enough to see Amy's face. "It's so good to hear your voice again."
Amy smiled. "Is dad here too?"
Abby looked into Amy's eyes, and started to cry again. There was so much Amy didn't know...

"What is it, mom?" Amy asked, watching her mother's face twist up in sadness.
"It's nothing" Abby replied, deciding not to tell Amy about Elmer just yet. "It's just so good to see you again. Awake, and talking... it's like a dream. I was afraid I'd... I would never..."
Amy pulled Abby in close again, and held on as Abby shook them both as she cried. It must have been hard, Amy thought. But then, I wasn't gone that long, was I?
"Mom?" she asked.
"Yes?" came a muffled reply.
Amy gently pushed her mother up so she could see her face again. She looked from Abby to the doctor and the nurses still standing by. "How long has it been? A few days? A week maybe?"
"Nearly half a yahren" Abby whispered.

"Half...a... yahren...?" Amy repeated, looking at them all as if it might be a joke.
"Do you remember what happened to you?" Abby asked.
"Sure" Amy replied. "The mission..., escaping the base. Whoa now, there's a story...! Then the second basestar. Last thing I remember is Lazant and I going out to meet the cylons..."
"And then?" the doctor asked. He was looking on in fascination. Only hours earlier the patient was hopeless, and now there she was, talking like nothing had happened. "Do you remember what happened then?"
Amy had a blank look. "Then... I woke up here. I guess." Her face screwed up in puzzlement. "Half a yahren? Are you sure?"
"Do you remember Astraea?" Abby asked. "She helped Lazant and you escape. Do you remember her?"
Amy thought back. "Yesssss, I think I do. She and Lazant..." She suddenly felt cold, jerking her hands up to her head. "It hurts, mom. Oh lords...!"
"Amy!" Abby said, grabbing her arms. "It's okay. You're safe now." But Amy tried to jerk free.
The doctor nodded to a nurse, who quickly administered a shot. After a few moments, Amy seemed to lose strength, and sagged back into the bed. "It might have been too much too soon" the doctor said. "To see her awake and talking, it's easy to forget what she's gone through. And we may never understand it fully as it is."
Abby caressed the side of Amy's face, watching her daughter's breathing slowly go back to normal. Amy looked up at her.
"It's really been half a yahren?" Amy asked.
Abby nodded, reaching down to take Amy's hands in hers. They felt like ice.

Abby stayed close by, never leaving the room as the doctor and the nurses examined Amy. Abby didn't want to take her eyes off Amy, fearing that she might vanish or something that would prove that this was just a dream. The doctor came over at one point to discuss something with Abby, and Abby nodded in agreement, that there were many things Amy should be made aware of, and that they should come from Abby rather than someone else.
Finally the room was cleared, and Abby smiled at her daughter. "Glad that's done with" Amy said.
"It's never entirely done with" Abby said with a laugh. "But it's good to have some alone time. I don't think we've had any since you last visited the agro ship a long time ago."
"Yeah" Amy said. "Been busy. You know." She smiled, though a bit of regret showed in her eyes.
"Amy" Abby said with a sigh, "there's a few things we need to talk about."
"I know" Amy interrupted. "I have a lot of questions!"
Abby looked pained. "There are some specific things that I don't want you to hear elsewhere first." She looked at Amy, and it felt like her heart was breaking. "About your father. Amy, he's passed away."
Amy's eyes watered and it looked for a moment like she was about to break down, but she got control of herself. "How?"
"I'm still not sure. Security has been looking into it. But when you didn't return from the mission with the others, he took it very hard. We all did."
"I see."
Abby seemed puzzled. "Is there something I'm missing here? I thought you'd be a little more upset. I mean..."
"He never liked me" Amy said flatly. "Never loved me or cared about me."
"That's not true."
"Sure it is. And I'll be damned if I shed a tear for him now." Abby looked hurt as she sat on a corner of the bed. "I'm sorry mom, all those years of neglect took it's toll. Look, I'm sorry he's gone. I'm sorry for you mostly, losing the man you loved. If I cried at all, it would be for you. You guys were a team."
"Yeah" Abby replied, wiping her eyes. "Well, you needed to know that. There will be a service eventually."
"And I'll be there" Amy assured her. "If you still want me to, that is."
Abby looked surprised. "Of course I want you there."
"Come here" Amy said, reaching out for Abby. Abby moved closer and was drawn into a warm embrace. "It must have been horrible" Amy said. "Losing dad, and thinking I was dead too."

Abby hugged her daughter hard. It was surprising to hear talk of Elmer coming from Amy that way, but the fact of the matter was that Abby felt largely the same way about Elmer's death. It hadn't been much of a marriage, and he hadn't been much of a father either.
She didn't want the hug to end, but there was so much else to be discussed. She gently pulled back to look at Amy.
"I am sorry" Amy said. For her father's death, or for her lack of emotion over it, she didn't say. Abby just nodded. "My turn" Amy said. "I've got to know. Did Major Brie make it back?"
Abby nodded again. "Yes she did. And it's a long long story. She was put on trial for your death..."
"On trial?"
"All sorts of horrible accusations. And I'm afraid you didn't come out of it looking too good. They questioned your skills as a captain, and Charybdis had to testify about what you two were doing before you left."
"Oh lords" Amy said in disgust. "They just don't quit, do they? I should have resigned a long time ago. To hades with all of them!" She sighed, still seething. "So everybody knows everything about..." Abby nodded. "Lords!" Amy said again, a far off look in her eye.
"It got worse. Brie got convicted, then abducted by some lunatic fringe group who tried to take over the Agro ship. She was injured pretty badly, but she's out of medlab now. In fact, I have a message here saying she'd like to see you."
"I'd like to see her too" Amy replied.
"It got very crazy. And I'll warn you of something. In order to save herself, she told the agro farmers that she was your real mom."
"What?!"
"I know, I know. It was more insane on that ship than anyone can know. It was quite lawless there for a while, and a mob got together to take it out on Brie for being responsible for your death. You were considered dead remember, even after you returned with Astraea and Lazant."
"I know" Amy replied, "but did everyone have to lose their heads around here?"
"Brie almost lost hers" Abby replied. "Her story bought her some time, but it doesn't seem to want to go away. I just wanted to explain first, because you will hear something eventually."
Amy nodded.
Abby took a deep breath. "Amy, there's something else you need to know, about that night with Charybdis."

"What else could there possibly be?" Amy asked. "The whole fracking fleet knows what we did."
"Amy" Abby said, taking hold of Amy's hands, "You are pregnant."
Amy sat in silence for a long moment. "You're kidding."
Abby shook her head no. She wasn't sure how this news was going to hit Amy. She sat there, holding her daughter's hands for what seemed like sectons. Amy pulled her hands free slowly, and brought them up to her head. She leaned forward and sat there with her head down, hands gathering her hair in her fists.
Finally she looked up at Abby. "Does Charybdis know?" she asked.
Abby shook her head. "We weren't sure he was the one. I mean, the timing of it, the due date, it seems right, but still..."
"Mom" Amy interrupted, "I might have a few boyfriends, but I didn't sleep with them all. It had to be Charybdis, unless..."
"Unless what?"
"Mom, could we check? Find out for sure? Right away?"
Abby studied her daughter's face, unsure at the sudden urgency. "Sure" she replied, "I don't see why not."
Amy flopped back onto her pillow. "Pregnant? Oh Lords. What do I do now?"
"I have to make sure you understand" Abby said, "the doctors are not sure you'll be able to carry the baby full term. Being pregnant so close to having been in Cylon hands, and the things they did to you..." She ran a hand down the side of Amy's face.
Amy took the hand and held onto it tightly. "Could you see about the test?"
Abby nodded. "I'll have Charybdis paged. He'll be happy to see you up and talking. Should I tell him about...?"
"No" Amy replied. "I will. If it's his, we have a lot to talk about."
"Tell me one thing, sweetheart" Abby said. "Who else do you think it might be if it's not Charybdis?"
Amy's face grew solemn. "Baltar" she replied. "It's possible anyway. I was unconscious and alone with him for quite a while." Her face began to twist up. "I've just got to know, mom..."

Abby had left the room to have Charybdis paged, and was gone longer than Amy had expected her to be. Amy had used the time alone to gather her thoughts, and to test her legs. She swung them over the side of the bed, and carefully put a little weight on them. They felt tired, stiff and sore, but after a moment she had her balance on them. She let go of the bed, and was standing there with a look of satisfaction on her face when Abby suddenly returned.
"Look who's up!" Abby said with a smile. "How do you feel?"
"Like I have lead weights for legs" Amy replied. "Is Charybdis coming?"
Abby's smile disappeared. "He's been paged, but he's a busy man. I'm sure he'll come as soon as he can."
Amy nodded, her happy expression gone as well. She looked down at her feet, contemplating taking a step.
"I have some good news though" Abby went on. "You are being moved. You don't need the life support chamber anymore."
"Can't I just check out... no, I guess I can't." Amy sat back against the bed, looking down.
"Try not to think about it. There's nothing they can do until the tests are run. Besides, I have some more news to take your mind off things."
"What?" Amy asked, looking up at Abby.
"I'm going to release the restriction on visitors. There isn't any reason why you shouldn't have them now."
Amy sighed. "I don't know if I'm up to that..."
"Sure you are" Abby interrupted. "And do you know how many requests I've had, of people wanting to see you?"
"Charybdis?"
"He has stopped by, Amy. He's very concerned."
Amy nodded. "Okay. It would be nice to see my friends again. But mom, nobody knows about the baby, do they?"
Abby shook her head. "Only me and the medical staff. It's no one else's business. You tell who you want, and when you want."
"Okay. Thanks." Amy slowly got to her feet again. "So when do I move?"
Abby smiled, looking at the skimpy disposable medlab smock Amy was wearing. "I think some clothes would be a good idea first."
"And a shower."
Abby sniffed the air. "Oh yes, definately!"
"Mom!"
* * *
A short time later Abby walked Amy down from the life support wing to a regular medlab room. Amy walked slowly, using Abby for support, but she couldn't help but smile the whole time. She was grateful to sit once they reached the room.
"Guess it's going to take a while" Amy said, flopping into a chair. "To get my strength back..."
"You just sit there and rest a while" Abby said. "I'm going to the desk to have that restriction on visitors lifted."
Abby walked to the main desk, and had the restriction lifted. Then she keyed her personal com, and sent a message to Major Brie.
Major Brie,
I wanted to let you know the restriction on visitors to Amy has been lifted. I'm sure you are anxious to see her. I'd like to talk to you as well as soon as time permits.
Abby
