Kyla sat in the living area of her shared quarters, her hand absentmindedly on her stomach. She was learning to think of the life growing inside of her as her baby, not Pierce's, and she loved the child more by the micron. She was watching General Sickbay, wondering what all of the hoopla was about the return of Doctor Noah. He had been on the show yahrens before she had started watching but she had to admit, the actor was kind of cute.
Across the small room, sitting at his computer, was Boleman. Something had him shaking his head. "I don't believe it," he kept mumbling to himself.
The program was interrupted. Kyla paid closer attention. "Boleman," she said excitedly, "they're reporting that Brie is awake!"
"What?" Boleman looked up with a start.
"Brie's awake," Kyla repeated. "I wonder if she's allowed visitors..."
"Oh no you don't!" Boleman protested. "You know as well as I do that you can't be walking around the Callisto. Kyla, you're really starting to show. If one of Pierce's people were to find out that you're carrying his baby..."
"I'm carrying MY baby," Kyla corrected. She sighed. "But you're right. Give her my best when you see her?"
Boleman smiled. "I'll do even better. I'll see if I can eventually arrange for her to stop by here."
Kyla returned the smile. "Thanks. So what is it that you're working on that has you so engrossed?"
"Nothing much," Boleman replied. "I've just been offered an Opposer position here on the Callisto.”

"Opposer?" Kyla repeated. "Are you going to take it?"
Boleman sighed. "I don't know. It sounds like they're really shorthanded. Apparently there have been more arrests related to Pierce, something to do with Captain Amy, and some of the medical staff. The rest is classified and I won't have clearance unless I take the job. Strange, I didn't think that Amy had anything to do with Pierce."
"There was Brie's declaration that Amy is her biological daughter," Kyla reminded him.
"That's right." Boleman was quiet for several microns. "You were there. Do you think it's true?"
"She was convincing," Kyla replied. "But then again, she also convinced me that she wasn't seriously hurt. Then she almost died. It seems to me that she's a pretty good liar. She was desperate. All they wanted was her blood, no one believed her that there was a bomb, and that the entire fleet was in danger. So, when are you going to see her?"
Boleman paused again. "I don't know if she'd want to see me. The last time we spoke, she fired me."
Kyla smiled. "A lot has changed since then. I don't know Brie all that well, but she said in the statement she released that she would have done anything to help prove that her husband had been murdered. You helped prove it. I bet she'd love to see you. The worst thing that could happen is that she won't let you in."
"You're right again," Boleman said. "I guess it couldn't hurt to stop by."
“Besides,” Kyla reminded him, “you promised to see if you could eventually bring her by. And maybe talking to Brie will give you some perspective into the Opposer job.”
“How did you get to be so smart?” Boleman asked with a grin.
“If I was smart,” Kyla quickly started, “I wouldn’t be in my current predicament.”

Before Boleman could come up with a response the alarm signaled that someone was at the door. It wasn’t a surprise, Den had been remarkably punctual in bringing Kyla her meals. Boleman wanted to curse every time the alarm sounded, the new security system was an incredible bother, but if it kept Kyla safe from what remained of Pierce’s followers then he was more than willing to put up with it. He was growing quite fond of Kyla, thinking of her almost as the daughter that he never knew that he had wanted. He had heard Kyla whispering on more than one occasion to her unborn child about his “Grandpa Boleman” and grinned whenever he thought about it. It was ironic that the madman who cost him his wife had unintentionally given him a family.
"Set it up the same place?" Den asked, wheeling in the cart with the food.
"That would be fine," Boleman replied absentmindedly. He still had his mind on the Opposer position. He was seriously thinking about accepting. Everything else in his life had changed, why not his career as well?
"And how are you feeling, Kammy?" he asked Kyla, setting her food in front of her. "Are you sleeping well?"
"Yes, thank you," Kyla replied.
"I had noticed that you haven't been eating all of your food," Den continued. "I found some crackers, very good for an upset stomach. I remember when my wife was expecting, she lived off of the things."
"What makes you think that she's expecting?" Boleman asked quickly.
"You've been talking about it since Kammy was in the Sick Bay," Den said quickly. "I didn't know that it was a secret."
"It's not a secret," Kyla said. "So how many kids did you and your wife have?"
"None," Den replied, a fake tear in his eye. "She miscarried."
"I'm sorry," Kyla said quickly.
Den smiled. "Don't worry about it, my dear. I've had almost fifty yahrens to come to terms with it. But I want you to do me a favor."
"Anything," Kyla said.
"Do whatever your doctor tells you," Den said, looking past Kyla. "Get plenty of rest. And have a healthy baby. We're counting on him."
Kyla stared at Den. "We? Counting on my baby?"
Den looked away, embarrassed. "Not just your baby, all the children in the fleet. We, the human race, are counting on our little ones for our survival. That's all I meant."
"Oh," Kyla replied, not sure what else to say.
"Well," Den continued, wheeling the cart away, "I've taken up enough of your time. Enjoy your meal, Kammy. I'll see you in a few centars." He left, hoping that he had covered his mistake.
