"Relax, Artus,” Brie said, purposely not using his rank. “This IS a normal conversation, not a debriefing. But my position makes it necessary to take everything into consideration, even things that happen in normal conversations. If someone can’t control their emotions they are a danger to everyone that they’re flying with in battle. You’re not the first member of Gold Squadron that I’ve had to point this out to, and believe me, you won’t be the last.” She paused for several microns. “And you get to be the one to explain to Amy why there’s a big dent in her new door.” Hoping to get back to the topic of Artus’ missing yahrens, Brie took a step back towards the bed. Unexpectedly her healing leg gave out. She started to fall. Artus reached out to catch her. Brie felt a strange sensation, vaguely familiar. Instinctively she glanced over her shoulder, almost expecting to see her late husband standing there. The sensation slowly faded. “Thanks,” was all that she could say.

As Brie fell, Artus almost instinctively caught her. As he caught her he experienced the strange white sensation again, even if only just for a second. Brie looked at him and it was almost as if she saw someone else in stead of Artus there.
"Thanks." she said.
Artus looked into her eyes and then reached over to her leg. He put his hand on it and there seemed to be a momentary flash again.
"That should help." he said.

"What was that?" the first man in white shouted, clearly disturbed at what he had just seen.
There was a flurry of motion going on around him as people were cheking several instruments.
"Perhaps it was some sort of residual effect..." one person offered : "His regenerative process is not fully complete."
Machinery all around was bleeping and spitting out bits of information.
"Residual effect." the man said, at a mocking tone; "He seemed to be aware of what he was doing. How is this possible?"

Brie sat down again, surprised by what had just happened. The tightness that she had been experiencing in her thigh was gone. She looked up at Artus. If you can do that, then why can't you do something to help Amy? she thought, but didn't say the words.
A micron later something changed. An intense burning sensation started where Pierce had shot her and quickly spread over her whole leg. The wound burst open again, and her uniform was soon drenched with blood. “What the frack did you do to me?” was all that Brie could say.

"Me?"
Artus said, a blank look of innocence and indignation on his face.
"Oh, I didn't do anything. Isn't that painfully clear?"
At that point the wound ripped open even further. Artus looked Brie up and down, his face emotionless.
"You're quite resillient, you know. Most humans would pass out at that amount of pain."
He looked straight into Brie's eyes.
"Just let me come inside you and this will all be over. Your obsession with the chain of command has made this one useless to me anyway. Think of the knowledge you would gain. Don't you want to find out what happened to the Pegasus? Or to your husband, for that matter?"

"To Hades with my husband," Brie said. "What else can you offer?"
"What would you like?"
"I don't know," Brie replied, thinking. "How about...power! Unlimited power!"
"Wrong science fiction story, but it's possible."
"Cool!" Brie exclaimed. "Can you put me in charge of the fleet?"
"The fleet, Earth, the universe, take your pick!"
"Cool!" Brie repeated. "Empress Brie. I've always like the sound of that."
"And you know that actor who plays Doctor Noah on General Sickbay? Just say the word and he’s yours.”
"Wow.” Brie was really loving the whole idea. “And after that...can you get me to DragonCon this year?"
An audible sighed echoed through the room. “Sorry, Empress, but some things just ain’t gonna happen.”

Sorry, couldn’t resist. The next post is real, I promise.

Brie wasn’t sure what was going on, but the cold chill running down her spine told her that something was terribly wrong. She purposely ignored most of what had just been said. “If he’s useless to you why don’t you just let him go?”
“Because he is mine.”
“But I’m not,” Brie said defiantly. “I will not follow you.”
“So be it.....for now. Until then, maybe I'll amuse myself by checking on your daughter.”
"No!" Brie screamed, but it was too late. The lights flickered, the temperature in the small room dropped several degrees, and suddenly everything was as it has been before. The pain in Brie’s leg returned to the tightness that she had been feeling all along, and the blood on her uniform vanished. Artus stood by the door, a dazed look in his eyes. Brie wondered if he had any recollection of what had just transpired. “Artus, just what did you have to promise to sacrifice to save Amy?”

Artus shook his head, like he was trying to clear his thoughts.
"Promise? I don't know what you are talking about, major."
He looked around the room, dazed. Then he straightened himself out again.
"What is this room again? Never mind that. I suddenly have a bad feeling about captain Amy. I think it's best if I go check on the proceedings."
He looked straight at Brie.
"You know major, I recommend you take a rest. Not to be impolite, but you look very tired. Why don't you have a lie down on that bed there. I'll go check on Amy and when I'm sure everything is done to satisfaction I'll come back here and report."

The last thing that Brie was about to do was rest. She immediately contacted Doc Bkj on a secure channel. "Doc, this is Brie," she said, a bit of desperation in her voice.
"Brie, good news," Bkj replied. "Kyla's in labor. It shouldn't be too much longer, I'm waiting to hear from the midwife. You should hear Boleman, he's a nervous wreck. He's acting like this is the first time that anyone has ever..."
"I don't mean to sound rude," Brie interrupted, "but this is an emergency. Lieutenant Artus is on his way down there to check on Amy. Under no circumstances is he to go anywhere near her. I don't care if it's been ordered by Commander Apollo himself, you need to keep Artus away."
"Amy's in surgery right now," Doc reminded her. "There's no way he can see her."
"Believe me, he might try to find a way," Brie said. "You should be prepared to sedate him if needed."
"Brie," Doc started, "what's going on?"
"Hopefully I'm just being an alarmist," Brie explained. "We've been talking, trying to figure out where he's been. He's, well, he's got a bit of a temper, and I also don't think that he's always fully aware of what's going on around him."
"Did he hurt you?" Doc asked.
"No," Brie said immediately, "nothing like that. And everything's going to be fine. Please, just trust me, and keep him away from her. Thanks for your help. Major Brie, out."

Artus was moving through sickbay as if he was moving through a dream. And not a good dream at that.
He tried to think of when his life had been less complicated, but arrived at the conclusion that he couldn't remember that far back.
He sighed.
And then he noticed the medtech he had kissed earlier. He pulled himself straight and gave her one of his winning smiles.
"Hello again..." he said.
She looked up from the desk, and immediately looked down again.
"Weren't you arrested by the blackshirts?"
Artus laughed.
"A slight misunderstanding, I assure you."
The medtech didn't look up, but it was clear from the sound she made that she did not believe him. So Artus put his hand on her arm.
She now looked straight at him and he stared right into her eyes.
"I won't bother you long. All I need to find out is where they are operating on captain Amy. Then I'll leave you alone."
The medtech stared blankly at the opposite wall. She extended her right arm and pointed in the direction of the operating room. Artus followed the way she pointed with his eyes.
"Thank you, my dear." he said, making off in that direction. The medtech was still staring at the wall. Only those who would stand close to her could hear her soft whisper:
"Alone. So alone...."
