After talking with Doc Bkj, Brie got in touch with another person. She didn't know him all that well, but knew that if anyone on the Callisto would have the answers that she was looking it, he would be the one. On a secure channel she contacted Rev. Mars, the Callisto's spiritual advisor.
“What can I do for you, Major?” he asked.
“First,” Brie started, “I need to make sure that this conversation is completely confidential.”
“Of course,” Rev. Mars replied. “I’m under oath to not share confidential information, no matter what. If Pierce himself had come to me and told me his plan I wouldn’t have been able to tell anyone.”
“Thank you,” Brie said. “I need to know...it’s difficult to find the right words...I guess I’m looking for information about the war between good and evil.”
“I take it you’re not talking about the Cylons.”
“No.” Brie took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “There’s a man, a warrior, I’ll call him Artie. He disappeared for a couple of yahrens. He has only flashes of what might have happened during the time he was missing. And he’s changed.”
“Something like that will change anyone,” Rev. Mars pointed out.
“It’s more than that,” Brie continued. “Artie has an unusually strong devotion to a certain young woman. She had almost died about the time he disappeared, but then suddenly she was fine.”
“Could be a coincidence,” Mars suggested.
“Yeah, but when we were talking he mentioned sacrificing himself for her. At first that made no sense, why would allowing himself to be killed by the Cylons have had anything to do with her? But then things got really weird.” Brie paused. “You’re going to think that I’m crazy.”
“Believe me, Major, I’ve heard all kinds of things,” Rev. Mars assured her. “I know you’re not crazy. What happened next?”
“I have this wound on my leg,” Brie said slowly. “It’s taking forever to heal properly. Artie touched it, and at first it seemed like it was healed. But then it got worse, the pain was almost unbearable, and then......it was like someone was speaking through him. This voice said it wanted to come inside of me. It promised me all kinds of knowledge, and said that Artie was no longer useful.”
Rev. Mars listened intently. “What did you say?”
“I said no,” Brie replied. “It then made a threat, saying it might go after one of the dearest people in my life, who happens to be the same woman that Artie has the devotion for. Then things returned to normal.”
“What happened to Artie?” Rev. Mars asked.
“He had no recollection of what had happened,” Brie said. “He then took off, claiming that he needed to go check on the young woman. She’s in surgery right now. I’ve alerted the med lab, and Artie said that he’ll be coming back here.”
“Brie, you did the right thing,” Rev. Mars told her. “If you resist the dark forces it limits their power. You’ll remember, I’m sure, yahrens ago when Count Iblis was a guest of the fleet. He came in making all kinds of promises and even bringing some of them about. Even Commander Sheba followed him.”
“But this is different,” Brie said. “This wasn’t a new man, coming in and trying to take over. It was like Artie was possessed by something.”
“That’s exactly what you’re dealing with,” Mars responded. “But remember, Brie, our souls aren’t released until we’re dead. As long as Artie is still alive, his soul is still his. He’s just needs to be reminded of that. If he trusts you, you’re going to have to help him.”
“How do I do that?” Brie asked.
Rev. Mars sighed. “I wish I could tell you.”
