As Artus walked in to the Gold Squadron men's barracks he had the strangest sensation. To him it had felt like he had just left this place a few days ago to go on a mission, and had then spent several days in sickbay. In reality he now knew that several Yahrens had passed since he had last been here. Since he had last been home.
Home. What a strange sensation to actually feel like coming home. For what other home than his bunk does a soldier have. Still, this place felt more like home than the Rising Star ever did when he had lived there with his mother.
This again set another trail of thoughts running through his head. He wondered what had happened to his mother. He had been in sickbay for days and he had not had contact with her. Maybe she didn't even know he was still alive?
As he was thinking Artus walked over to his bunk. It was covered with personal items from another Colonial Warrior.
Frack!
Evicted. Why not, after all everybody seemed to think he was dead. At the far end of the room he could see an empty bunk. He resigned to better move over there then. But first he would retrieve his secret stash of fumarillos. He felt for the secret panel he had made in the bunk himself.
Double frack!
The fumarillos were gone. In stead he did find several pictures of a group of naked men playing Triad. Artus quickly replaced them and tried to ignore the fact that they were stuck together.
After wiping his hand on the sheet he made a mental not that he didn't want to find out who currently occupied this bunk. Some things were better left unknown.
He moved to the empty bunk and noticed that there was a note from Brie on it.

Artus read the note. It was actually quite short and formal, but it did the trick.
He was ordered to report to the simulators to have his flight status approved and to report to the firing range to have his weapon re-approved.
Artus sighed. He remembered the first time he had spent in the simulators. Unhappy with the performance of the simulated craft he had made some on the spot 'improvements' to the simulator. He was almost thrown out of the military for that.
The note didn't really say anything other than that. Not that Artus expected it to say anything else. Still, he mused, a little "I'm sorry I shot you" would have been nice. But then again, as this was just a note lying in the Gold Squadrons men's barracks, there was no telling who might have picked it up and read it. Perhaps it was better this way.
Artus headed back out the door, making his way to the firing range. First thing he felt he needed was to have a weapon by his side again. Just in case any of his other superior officers decided to shoot him.

As Artus moved to the firing range he felt a sickening feeling in his stomach. He knew that it was probably due to the fact that he was sick with worry about Amy. However as Brie had explained to him, it was better if he left her alone for the duration of the operation at least. And after all, after the operation was over she was to be sealed to colonel Charybdis and that would be it. Artus considered himself to be under orders to drop te subject.
It still didn't make him feel any better.
He stepped inside one of the cubicles and picked up the training gun. His mind wandered back to Amy. They had been through quite a lot together and Artus had truly believed in his intention to give her all the space she needed. It was like he had felt that eventually she would come back to him. A fool's hope it would seem now.
The more he thought about her the more lethargic he started to feel. Perhaps Brie was correctr in saying that he had wanted to protect her too much. But he also knew that Amy could cope with just about anything that was thrown at her. And it wasn't that he could blame her for getting sealed with Charybdis after him being declared dead and all that...
"That was some impressive shooting..."
Artus looked up
"What?"
The range instructor walked over to his cubicle.
"I said that was some impressive shooting lieutenant. You hit every target at the assigned position."
Artus looked at his hand. He had not even noticed that he had picked up the weapon.

Attention all members of Gold Squadron:
It is my pleasure to inform you that Captain Amy, our third officer, is out of surgery and is recovering. At this time she is not allowed visitors. I would like to thank all of you for your concern and prayers during this difficult time.
Major Brie Commanding Gold Squadron

Artus read the message when he came back to his bunk. His new bunk that is.
He sighed. Well, at least Amy was out of danger. For the moment at least.
He cofidantly felt the weapon by his side. It felt good to be armed again. Even though the instructor had him take the test three times because he believed there was something wrong with the original result.
Too bad he couldn't go and visit Amy. Then again, even if he could have, would it have been wise to do so?
Why was life always being this difficult. He put his jacket back on and wanted to head for the flight simulator, when suddenly something occured to him. All this time he had been in sickbay and his mother had not even looked him up once...

He kept mulling it over in his mind. Maybe everybody 'forgot' to tell her he was back?
Oh well, nevermind. He had a few things to attend to first anyway. With a sigh he headed to the flight simulators.
"Lieutenant Artus reporting in. Major Brie told me to get my flight status back."

After the simulation was finished, Artus went over the results with the instructor.
"You know, lieutenant, you still have the basics right, and I must say you showed some amazing reflexes, but you were flying like it had been yahren since you last flew your viper into combat."
Artus sighed.
"Well over two yahren actually. Close to three by now I recon."
The instructor looked astonished; "Three yahren? Where have you been all that time?"
A hurt look crossed Artus' face.
"I wish I knew."
The instructor grumbled; "Oh, well, be like that. But you'd better get in some more flight training."
"Right, better fire her up again, "Artus said as he shrugged his shoulders.

Artus did another simulation. And then another one.
He kept it up for several hours, until the techs, all yawning, started complaining about needing sleep and all that. So Artus logged out and went back to the barracks.
Surrounded by warriors he didn't know or recognise he went to sleep. And when he woke up again he simply headed straight back to the flight simulator room. Ignoring the complaints of the techs he ran the simulation again, and again.
He also purpousfully didn't vote in the squadron elections. He felt that in order to place a proper vote he would have to know more about the current situation of the squadron. And right now he didn't even know who his own wingman was. That is, who his own wingman would be as soon as he had his flight status back.
So he just kept doing the simulations. Anything that would take his mind of his predicament. Anything that would take his mind off Amy.

After finishing one of his simulated runs, Artus heard quite a racket going on in the simuklator room. He got out of his own simulator and walked over to lieutenant Flell who seemed to be in charge at that moment.
"Hey Flell, what in the name of Kobol is going on?"
It seemd like Flell awoke from some dream as he suddenly stared at Artus.
"Oh, lieutenant Artus, I didn't see you there..."
Probably because you were staring at the female cadets, Artus thought.
Not noticing the look in Artus' eyes, Flell continued;
"I've just authorised a snack perod for the cadets and they seem very exited about it."
Artus looked wearily at the cadets as they headed out of the simulator room.
"Yeah, very exited.."
Flell smirked at Artus;
"Oh, come on, lieutenant, you remember what it was like when you were young."
Stunned by this remark, Artus stared at Flell. When he was youg? He felt like screaming that he was still young. He was still young, wasn't he? Admittedly he had been gone for about two yahrens but that didn't make him old, now did it?
Or did it?
Artus jsut said;
"Mpf.."
But inside he cursed for not finding a better counter argument than exhaling.
"Look Artus, you have been at this continuously for several days now. As far as I can't tell, you haven't been eating or resting properly. Why don't you take a break yourself?"
Artus frowned. But then again, maybe Flell was right. He could use a break. Perhaps Flell wasn't as bad as Artus had thought he was.
Flell grinned.
"You know Artus, if you head over to the Callisto cafe, you can probably still get a look at those youg cadets. I always enjoy a good view with my meal."
He slapped Artus on the back and headed over to the simulation overview office.
Artus cursed under his breath;
"You stinking Boray."
He turned and headed out the door. In a spur of the moment descision he headed for the Callisto cafe anyway.
