I forgot to add that the destruction of the colonies occured at the end of a 1,000 yahren war. The Galactica was reportedly 500 yahrens old, and probably upgraded a number of times. The generally accepted theory is that the five (or so?) Battlestars at Cimtar were all the known surviving battlestars from the fleet, which probably varied, possibly significantly, in size over time. However, we don't know how "active" the war was during much of the time or how many Battlestars would have been required during that time. Nor do we know how long it would have taken to construct one. Under a full war industry situation, I'd guess several yahrens based on the construction of aircraft carriers during WWII. Their somewhat advanced technology would likely have overcome the problems of ship size and material transporation to the space dock where they would have been built. In the case of the Callisto, we've assumed that it took around two yahrens using a captured and fully-automated Cylon construction dry-dock being automatically supplied construction materials from a nearby asteroid. Even then, the Callisto's interior wasn't complete, but it was functional and good enough. If the war was more of a border conflict during much of its run, with frequent raids but only very occasional major battles, the Colonials might not have needed nearly as many Battlestars, making twelve or a similar small number more realistic, and might have taken a lot longer to construct them.

I believe the first reference to 12 battlestars was in Bruce Kraus's Encyclopedia Galactica which came out in early 1979. In that book, he states the common theory now accepted that there were 12 battlestars, one for each colony. The theory took on a life of its own and has now been almost accepted as canon.

We never saw more than 5 battlestars on screen at one time, but we saw them from various angles. repcisg at Colonial Fleets and Cylon Alliance has analyzed this and shown that there could have been as many as 23 or 24 battlestars present the way it was shot, though that's not probable. L This keeps in line with the theory that there were only 5 battlestars at Cimtar.. The Galactica, Atlantia, Triton, Pacifica and Acropolis.... That would also mean that according to the dialogue throughout the series that the entire fleet of battlestars was destroyed at Cimtar. In the beginning of the premiere episode, six Battlestars appear; Galactica, Atlantia, Pacifica, Triton, Acropolis, and Columbia.

I was answering another topic on a different BSG board I belong to and found this....
I had actually forgotten about this. I seemed to remember this as a TV movie. I think the beginning was a syndication alternate to "Return Of Starbuck"... I was nosing around on YouTube and came across this..
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
It's cut a bit differently, but it's there..and it does explain how many battlestars were at at Cimtar.

Yes, the geek has a question about BSG.... In "Saga Of A Star World" when we see Serina giving her report on Caprica just before the attack, she says something to the effect "The reports of the armistice talks, taking place right now on the star Kobol, are not coming in as we hoped." And the next episode they discover Kobol and are shocked.. What's up with that? Was there a battlestar Kobol? (Which I think is more likely than a storyline loophole) I've got to watch that movie again. I'm not sure if there was a Battlestar Kobol. Going to look into that. Interesting.
