Since Tony mentioned this elsewhere, I thought I'd mention an observation. A topic turns "hot" with the flaming icon, when it reaches two pages. It has nothing to do with the number of times something has been read, or the number of replies.
Speaking of, don't trust the counters either. Although I have no idea why the one reset, some things count as reads and other times it doesn't register at all. So just because something is only at "27 views" for example doesn't mean that it's been read only 27 times. And also don't trust the "10 latest posts" because they don't all always show up.

I was confusing our set-up with that at CF. There, 150 views bumps it to a hot status, not the number of pages. Here, it looks like Brie's right that two pages does it. I couldn't find anything about it in the help section.
