Abby woke up again, nearly jumping out of her seat. It was always uncomfortable for her on these flights. She used to always pay closer attention to Elmer during their trips to other ships, just to take her mind off the journey. But Elmer was gone now. She wondered if she'd paid that kind of attention to him all the time, things might have turned out differently. But it was too late for thoughts like that.
The chrono read one hour to go now. The com still showed no messages, and with a sigh Abby reached out and disconnected her personal com from the system. If Em wanted to harrass her any more, she'd be disappointed to find Abby unreachable.
Freed from waiting for calls, Abby found her mind thinking clearer as she thought ahead to what she'd tell the doctors once she reached medlab. She thought about the patients awaiting donors, and how disappointed they were going to be, to say the least. That thought weighed heavily on Abby, but she couldn't let it bother her. Amy was going to survive, even if it meant staying on life support indefinately...

A little later in the shuttle cockpit, the pilot saw a pair of Vipers approaching the Callisto's landing bays. Moments later, Flight Specialist Geenie from the Callisto contacted the shuttle, "Shuttle, you are clear for approach on current vector for Alpha Bay. Happy landing."

Abby stood up and stretched as the shuttle came to a stop. She'd be happy to be in the huge hanger after the long trip in the cramped shuttle. She gathered her things and joined the line of people getting off at this stop.
She blinked as her eyes adjusted to the brighter lighting in the bay. She walked down the ramp, and stopped, confused as to which way to go. "Elmer knew where things were. I always just followed him..." she thought.
She stopped an flight deck worker to get directions. He was more than helpful, and soon she was off the deck and heading down the corridors leading to medlab.
She walked into medlab, hopeful yet dreading what was to come. This would be it, one way or the other. Could Amy be saved? Would it matter if she stayed on life support for a hundred yarhens? What about the patients waiting for a donor? It's not like I've thought about this a thousand times. Just find the doc and tell him what you've decided. She's your daughter.
Abby stopped for a moment. No she's not. She's Brie's daughter. What right do you have, deciding... Abby shook her head to clear her thoughts. It's been like that ever since she'd left Em. Just find the doc. Try to find some peace as well.
She walked up to the desk, and asked for the doctor. Told it would be a few microns, she asked if she could see Amy. The nurse gave her a pass. Abby thought it odd but didn't ask any questions. She took the pass and walked to Amy's room.
It was the same as before. Nothing had changed. Amy was resting peacefully in the life chamber. Tears came to Abby's eyes as she sat down next to her. It had all been building in her mind, how she'd keep Amy on support until she was back to health, and then they'd set about taking down Em and Ange...
But nothing had changed. Abby reached into her bag, fingering the release form to allow Amy's organs to be donated. She pulled out a tissue instead. Wait for the doctor, see what he has to say...

For those keeping track, this also occurs in "28 RR- Brie and Amy's coma conversation", but since it has direct bearing on this thread as well, I'm putting it here too!
A dark figure sat brooding, drumming his fingers against the fabric of dimensions as they shifted and swirled around and through him. She felt so bad about Deke, and yet she rejected my offer! Deke should have been enough. He had read Captain Amy correctly, he was sure of it. Then where did that defiant streak come from? That soul so untarnished that she would reject an offer to save a brother in arms?
No matter. I've already invested in this one. If she'll not come willingly, then so be it.
Far away, on the Callisto, a monitor scanning micron to micron for brain waves in the comatose brain of Captain Amy suddenly sprang to life...
* * * Abby flinched, her head jerking up as the monitor let out a beeping noise. She looked at it, and where all the lines had been flat, one was now twitching ever so slightly.
Abby's heart began to race. She stood up, looking down at Amy. There wasn't any change in her appearance, and yet the monitor had detected something. Abby hit the call button to page a nurse, then bent closer to Amy, gently picking up and holding her hand.

Abby sat in the doctor's office, across the desk from the replacement doctor assigned to her daughter's case. Her heart was racing, and she did all she could to keep her hands steady as she lit a fumerette.
"Honestly we don't understand quite yet what is happening" the doctor was saying. "But where there was no activity at all in your daughter's brain, there are signs that her brain is now becoming active again. I've never seen anything like it before."
"But you've never had a case like this before either, correct?" Abby asked. "A mind emptied by the cylons?"
The doctor nodded. "We've just had this brain scan done, and you can clearly see the signs of activity when compared to an earlier scan."
"Any idea at all what it means?" Abby wanted to know as she reached out to take the two scans.
The doctor shrugged. "I'd hate to speculate, to fill you with false hopes..."
"I'd like any hopes right now doctor, even false ones."
The doctor looked pained. "Okay. Now this is just speculation, mind you. Based on what I'm seeing here, I'd bet that your daughter might be back to normal in a week."
"How can that be possible?" Abby wondered. She compared the two scans, and could see the obvious differences. She set them down, then took a drag on her fumerette.
"Honestly, this is all new ground to us. We simply don't understand it, but your daughter will be monitored closely, I assure you." The doctor suddenly looked even more pained. "There's something more that you should know. The situation has been corrected, so there's no need for concern. And your daughter could not be in safer hands."
"What are you talking about?" Abby asked.
"There's no easy way to say it, so I'll just come out with it." The doctor took a deep breath, then went on. "Followers of Pierce infiltrated this department."
Abby began to react but the doctor put up a hand to calm her down. "It's been handled" he assured her. "They did nothing to your daughter. They did however compromise several of our staff. Threatened their loved ones if they didn't go along."
"To what purpose?"
"To keep your daughter on the donor list. Apparently a key member of their group, or whatever remains of it, needed one of your daughters organs."
"So she wasn't as bad off as I was led to believe?" Abby asked. It was all so hard to believe what she was hearing.
"No, no" the doctor replied. "For all intent and purposes, your daughter was braindead until a few microns ago. We never expected recovery to be honest. However, Pierce's group managed to squelch a key bit of information about your daughters condition. One that kept her on the donor's list."
"And what was that?" Abby asked.
"Your daughter" the doctor replied, "is indeed pregnant."

On the other side of the fleet in an old frigate, not really suitable for flying, two men were talking. "I just received a coded message," the first said. "Some of our people in the med lab on the Callisto, well, they've been caught."
"No," the second man replied, his voice filled with sadness and anger. "And Doctor Ellis is dead. It was foolish for him to go after the Widow like he did. I guess they now realize that he wasn't working alone."
"I can't say for sure," the first man replied. "There's more bad news, though. It seems that Captain Amy has been taken off of the donor list. Looks like she might survive after all."
"That's terrible news!" the other man agreed. "What will happen now? How will he survive?"
"The artificial heart is working remarkably well," the first man said. "Although it would have been better to come from a human donor, the artificial heart should work for at least ten yahrens."
"By then Captain Amy is sure to be dead!" the second man joked.
"True," the first man remarked, "but this is no time for joviality. I want to know what went wrong with the first surgery. It was supposed to be a simple procedure."
"Inexperience, I'm afraid," the second man told him. "But don't worry, the surgeon has been dealt with. He had an untimely...accident."
"Is he dead?" the first man wanted to know.
The second man grinned. "As dead as the Great Traitor."
The first man leaned back and smiled. "Good. Dead men can't talk."

Back on the Agro ship, Em sat in her office, located in the agricultural complex of the ship. She was monitoring the latest reports from the fleet. Mostly they were mundane status updates having to do with nearly everything involved in operations, but there were usually early clues to be found for what ships were going to need as far as food supplies went, and Em was pretty adept at zeroing in on these bits of information.
She was glossing over the bulk of the Callisto's report when a familiar name caught her eye. "Captain Amy?" Em said, then leaned forward to read the report. "Captain Amy taken off organ donor list" she read aloud. That was it. One sentence, buried in there among the medical records.
"What did you do, Abby?" Em muttered, her lip curling. "What did you do?" She shut off the report list, and left the office for her quarters. There were some personal communications to be made.
* *
Back in medlab, the doctor was explaining things to Abby. "Mind you", the doctor was saying, "this is a pregnancy of the highest risk. Trying to carry a child full term after what your daughter has been through... So close after being in cylon hands... We just don't know what damage an early fetus could have suffered."
Abby nodded. "And here I'd dreamt of this one day. Being a grandmother. Now I half fear what sort of grandchild I might end up with."
"I don't mean to make you afraid" the doctor replied. "It's just that, well, the odds are against this child. We'll do all that we can of course. Amy surprised us, perhaps her child will as well."
"I suppose I'm just being selfish. Amy starting to recover should be gift enough, right?" Abby took a deep pull on her fumerette as a nurse came in, carrying new charts.
"Here's the latest scans" the nurse announced, handing them to the doctor.
The doctor smiled as he looked at them. "Amazing. Here, take a look." He handed the scans to Abby. It was clear that more of Amy's brain was coming alive again.
"I know" said the nurse. "Amy's uncle said the same thing."
"Uncle?" Abby asked sharply, looking up from the scans.
"That's what he said" the nurse replied. "Uncle Ange. He's with her now."
Abby stood up, her voice rising. "Safer hands, doctor?"

Amy's eyes shot wide open suddenly, and she gasped for breath. Ange had been looking at her, studying her closely for signs of life, and literally jumped when her eyes opened. He jumped again as the door flew open and the doctor, nurse, and Abby stormed in.
"What's going on here?" the doctor demanded of Ange. "This woman says you are not the patients uncle."
"Yeah, I'm not" Ange said defensively. "I think of myself as one though..." His voice trailed off as he caught Abby's stare. She knows. And she knows I know. But there's no proof, is there? "I am a friend of the family" he explained.
"Is that true?" the doctor asked Abby.
"Wasn't there a restriction on visitors?" Abby asked in reply, still staring at Ange.
The doctor nodded. "Major Brie had one. But she's been in a coma..."
"Doctor!" the nurse said excitedly as she checked on Amy. "Her eyes are open!"
The doctor stepped in between Ange and Abby, but as he passed by Abby never took her eyes off of Ange. "Her eyes are open" he repeated, shining a light into them. "No response though."
"Her breathing had been a little irregular" the nurse said, "but she's settled back down now."
"Nurse" the doctor ordered, "I want another scan done immediately." She nodded as the doctor turned around to address Abby. He noticed her expression, the way she stared at Ange.
"Is everything okay here?" he asked Abby.
She slowly nodded, still unable to take her eyes off of Ange. What had he been up to? "Is Amy alright?" she asked.
"Yes" the doctor replied. "Her eyes are now open, but she's still unresponsive. We need to clear the room now for another scan to be run."
Abby nodded again. It's not what she was asking, but to say anything more...
"Well, uh" Ange mumbled. "Sorry if I upset anyone, doctor." Abby's stare was leaving him more than uncomfortable. He wished he could wipe the expression off her face. He left quickly instead, Abby watching him go the whole way.

On impulse, Abby suddenly said "I'll be back in a few microns, Doctor."
He nodded. "Meet me back in my office?" She agreed and left Amy's room. She looked around, then left medlab, looking down the corridor both ways. She spotted Ange and went after him. "Excuse me!" she shouted at his back.
He turned, being the only one in the corridor, and a look crossed his face that he quickly covered up as she approached. "I'm sorry if I upset you back there..." he began.
She slapped him hard across the face. "Don't you sorry me!" she snapped.
Ange moved quickly, grabbing Abby by the shoulders and shoving her against the wall. He kept his hands there, holding her in place. "That was a little uncalled for" he sneered. "I was only visiting a friend."
Abby refused to give in to her fear. "You know very fracking well what you were doing. And what you've done."
"Well you don't very fracking well know the half of it" Ange said, keeping his voice low. "Em told me everything."
"She told me everything too."
"I'll bet she didn't" Ange said, starting to smile. "Want me to fill in some of the blanks for you?"
"Oh you daggit" Abby blurted out. "You fracking daggit! I'll..."
"You'll what?" Ange snapped. "There's no proof. And even if that idiot back there wakes up, she doesn't remember. She buried the whole thing. You really want to risk digging that up? Especially after this whole Cylon coma thing?" He laughed. "Not very responsible for a mother to do. Exposing her child to such risks." He used her shoulders to push off of, and took a step back. "You want me to stay away from her, fine. But leave the past where it is."
Abby just looked at him, breathing heavily. "Yes" she finally said. "You stay away from her, and me."

Ange keyed his security com, and took the incoming message from Em. It had been a few microns since Abby had confronted him, and he was still seething over it. He didn't like anyone knowing anything about him other than what he wanted...
"Yeah Em" he said into the com.
"What happened with the brat?" she asked. "What did Abby do?"
"Nothing" Ange replied. "Amy's just suddenly recovering, that's all." He laughed. "Looks like that donation thing isn't going to happen, huh?"
"Do you know who needed..." Em began, then caught herself. Ange doesn't know that part of things. He just thinks this is all just about him and his past.
"You know Em", Ange began, "why did you tell Abby all that about us and Amy? Cause I just saw her and..."
Yes, that's all he thinks it's about. "What did she say?" Em asked.
"Stay away, mainly" he replied. "I think she's thinking about helping Amy remember, but I gave her some things to think about. I don't think she'll go through with it."
"I wouldn't worry about it" Em said. "There's bigger things to worry about."
"Like what?"
"So the brat's recovering... I thought for sure Abby'd just taken her off the donor list without cause."
"Why are you so concerned about organs being donated anyway?" Ange asked. "I'm the one hanging here with my reputation in danger..."
"Oh please" Em said, cutting him off. "You're in no danger. And it was worth it just to see Abby's face when she saw the pictures. You said Abby's not going to pursue it, so just forget about it."
"Easy for you to say. You're not the most famous security guard in the fleet right now."
"For a tough guy you whine a lot" Em snapped. "The pictures are gone, and aside from Abby nobody else knows. If there's a still problem, why don't you just do something about it?"
"Yeah Em" he replied. "I just might have to." And with that, he pulled the plug on his com. Abby is not the only who knows, Em... There's still you.
