"Sure. Although, you know I don't drink coffee. But anything sounds good right now." She looked great, although a bit preoccupied. She would tell me if she needed to. I didn't want to push any buttons right now.

"I was talking about for me" Amy replied. "You can get whatever you want." She closed the door behind them and they began to walk down the corridor.
The demon had already slipped beyond her conscious thought, and again she wasn't aware of him. When he slid into the depths of her mind, she couldn't even remember him ever being there until he rose back up again.
But other things had her unsettled. Charybdis for one. Mom for another. Amy realized that she was upset for disappointing Brie, something she hardly had ever felt towards Abby, when she knew Abby as her mom. Abby had always been so lock-step with Elmer that Amy actually enjoyed falling short in their eyes.
But Brie, her true mom, brought out things Amy hadn't felt before. And the fact that Brie was disappointed in her made her feel badly....
"So" she said as they entered the mess hall, "where were we? At each other's throats if I'm not mistaken..."

I held out my hand and pulled a chair out for her. Amy sat down and I sat across the table from her.
"Amy, I don't want us to be at each other's throats. You may not want to hear this right now, but I do love you and I do want to take the seal with you. That's never changed. I"m still here, aren't I? "
Amy nodded silently. I continued, "Now, I guess the question is, 'where are you?'"

"Don't" Amy snapped. "Just don't." She struggled to keep her expression neutral. "You're right, I don't want to hear it right now. When I first opened the door and saw you there, I wanted to.... to...." Her hands balled up into fists, then she relaxed them. "I can't just snap my fingers and pretend everything is back to normal. I just can't. The best I can do right now is hope we get through this conversation without brawling. Small steps. And if that sounds like the same old to you, maybe you should just walk away. Maybe we'd both be happier that way. Maybe... maybe I'm just not worth it."
She looked him, wondering why he couldn't resist pushing her buttons. Then some other thoughts pushed their way in, and she reached out and touched his hand lightly as it rested there on the table....

One micron she seemd ready to take my head off, then the next, she touches my hand with complete gentleness and caring...
"Amy...I never meant to cause you any harm or confusion. You have to believe that. And you have to believe that you are worth it. That's why I'm here. That's why I'll still be there, however this all works out. You name it, what do you want from me? If you want time to think things over, then I'll step back. I can see that you have doubts. And if you need to clear up those doubts, then you do that. And I'll do everything I can to help..."

Amy stared at him for a long time before speaking. "It sounds so good" she said, "while you're sitting there. But when you are off again..." She stopped. When she spoke again it a different way all together. "You need to contact Abby. Make it right with her. We both felt pretty bad that you hadn't talk to her, at least comfort her about me, regardless of the reasons why. She would have been family for Kobol's sake."

I dropped my head. No matter what was going on at the time, Amy was right. I should have talked with Abby, investigation notwithstanding.
"You're right, Amy. You're right. I should have spoken to Abby, to Hades Hole with Urdea. I guess since you had always been at odds with your parents, I sort of..well, I sort of steered clear of them too...not knowing what they'd say about us. I knew that they didn't like me and all your past history with them about joining the Colonial Military. But, in the end, you're right. I will talk with her as soon as possible..."

Amy nodded silently. Again she just looked at Charybdis. Finally she said "There's something you should know. And lords know you shouldn't hear it from anyone else. I'm not sure if m--, if Brie is ready, but the lid is going to be completely off pretty soon anyway, and if we're ever going to move forward, you shouldn't hear it second hand..."

"Hear it second hand? Brie? Amy, what are you talking about?"

The demon couldn't stand it any more, and rose back into Amy's consciousness. "What are you talking about?" he repeated. "Second hand, like anything you've had to find out about this guy lately..."
Amy looked around. She was in a restaurant, dimly lit by candle, only the demon sat across from her, not Charybdis.
"What the..." she began to say, then stopped abruptly.
"No" the demon said. "I know what you are thinking. And the big lug can't hear us, and you aren't just sitting there drooling. We are between the ticks of the chronometer. If it ticked, that is..."
Amy looked at the demon, upset with him. "You pick great times to jump in." Even though the demon could be completely hidden from her when he wished it, when he did appear she took at as something normal. It was an odd arrangement, but the demon loved it. It gave him so much leeway...
"Hello" she said. "You had something to say?"
"Yes" the demon replied. "Why waste time with this jerkmushie? I wouldn't tell him a thing. Especially not about who your mom is. Let him find out someplace else. It's what he does to you. Do I have to remind you about Astraea?"
"He explained that."
"The smoochie smoochie part?" the demon reminded her.
"Go away."
"Too late to say that. You had your chance. But fine, tell him. No wonder your life was such a mess before I came along..."
And he was gone, and Amy was back with Charybdis... Yeah, what about the smoochie, she thought....
