The Battlestar Fan Club has had the recent honor of talking to Anne Lockhart (Lt. Sheba) of the original series and getting her point of view on things Galactica…
Our thanks to Mike Egnor for making this happen!
Please take a look at Anne’s website at: www.annelockhart.com/
BGR: What prompted you to enter the field of acting?
AL: I was genetically programmed.
BGR: What was your first acting experience professionally?
AL: “T is for Tumbleweed”. I was four years old.
BGR: Did your mother’s experience on “Lost in Space” prompt you toward the Sci-Fi genre?
AL: My mother’s experience on “Lost in Space” was actually the reason I turned down Galactica in the first place because I remember how unhappy she was doing it. That was one of the reasons I said no in the beginning. But when Glen came back with Sheba it was such a wonderful role I couldn’t say no.
BGR: How was it that you got your role of Sheba on the original Battlestar Galactica?
AL: It was written for me. Glen Larson wrote the role for me.
BGR; Where did you want the series to go? Specifically, what development did you want to see with your character?
AL: Well I certainly think that the Apollo/Sheba relationship was beginning to move into a new area. You know, they were oil and water, but it was like an opposites attract sort of thing. It was an interesting thing that was beginning to develop, so I certainly wanted to see where that went.
BGR: What do you think of the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica?
AL: I have seen it, and I think it’s wonderful. I think it’s terrific.
BGR: You are very involved in charities. What is your biggest cause?
AL: Well, obviously I work a lot for the Boy Scouts of America, as I’m doing here today, enjoying this wonderful, beautiful, Louisville weather. I’m in Eminence, Kentucky, with its southern hospitality, having a wonderful time, shooting two full rounds of sporting clays. We had a huge turnout here, almost 150 teams, I think. And last night we had an auction, which raised approximately $100,000 for the Boy Scouts. Next week I go to Branson, Missouri to do Irleen Mandrell’s shoot which is also benefiting the Boy Scouts of America and the Make A Wish Foundation. So Boy Scouts are close to my heart. Also, the Autistic Treatment Centers of Texas are another favorite charity that I work for.
BGR: What projects are you working on now?
AL: I’ve been doing a bunch of my voice work. I’m doing 310 to Uma next week which is a movie with Russell Crowe, which is a western. I just finished Fantastic Four 2, Alien vs. Predator 2 is in the wings, I’ve already worked on that and it’s coming out soon. A couple other movies. Some stuff, some things going on.
BGR: What ideas and projects do you have in mind for the future?
AL: Well I am going to do Soul of the West again. I believe that date is August 25th, and that’s at the Pioneer Amphitheatre outside of Amarillo Texas. Anybody in that part of the world, please come and see it because it’s a wonderful show. I’m doing the one woman show that I do, Frenchie McCormick, and we are all true characters in Texas history, and I do it with Barry Corbin, Alex Cord from Airwolf, Michael Horse, my father-in-law Buck Taylor, and of course Red Steagall, and it’s a very good show.
BGR: What would you like to say to the fans directly? Any commentary or comments?
AL: Just how lovely I think it is that you guys have such interest and I so appreciate everyone out there because I know [how fortunate I am]. I pray for all of you guys and your families, and I kind of feel like that I have this great extended family around the world. It’s a very cool feeling, and not that many people are as lucky as I am to have that feeling.
