Brie The Gold Squadron assignment is as follows:
Major Brie Lt. Granfury, wing
Captain Skyler SIC Lt. Thunderhawk, wing
Also, on unofficial standby are Lts. Stadia, Artus and Amy (after being cleared medically) and Ensign Marcus. If needed Lt. Stadia would be in command, Lt. Amy SIC. * * * * * * JustinB While sitting in the Black Squadron Office putting the finishing touches to the Flight Sim, I recieved a message from Lieutenant Colonel Charybdis. He was requesting the assignment of four Warriors for the short range escort duty A.S.A.P
Going over the Roster closely, I drafted the reply to the Lt. Colonel. ************
Lieutenant Colonel Charybdis.
Sir, Here is the list of Warriors that will be assigned to the Short Range Escort duty.
Captain JustinB Flight Leader Lieutenant RaycerX Ensign Killjoy and Ensign Stargazor.
Captian JustinB Black Squadron Third Officer * * * Once I had sent the assignments to the Lt. Col, I wrote up the orders for the Squadron and posted them in the Barracks. ************* To All Black Squadron Warriors.
Here is the list of Warriors that will be assigned to the Short Range Escort duty.
Captain JustinB Flight Leader Ensign Killjoy Wingman to Capt. JustinB Lieutenant RaycerX and Ensign Stargazor. Wingman to Lt.RaycerX
The Back-up Flight is as follows:
Lieutenant Rose, Lieutenant Phlandor Wingman to Lt. Rose Lieutenant Randrius, Ensign Ursiaon Wingman to Lt.Randrius
Captain JustinB Black Squadron Third Officer * * * Charybdis Very good, Captain JustinB. Get those Warriors some rest and have them ready to go before we come out of the jump.
They will be launching shortly after we come out of the jump. * * * JustinB With the help of Captain Resonant, I devised a Flight Simulation to help with the upcoming mission in the Blasanick System. Even though we hadn't be told we would be part of any patrol, I believed in the seven P's. Prior Preparation and Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.
Since most of our scanning will be visual, I had to make sure the warriors I was responsible for had the right training. Lieutenant Resonant is also added the ship-to-ship "missile module" to the SIM Vipers so everyone gets some practice with them. After completing the program then testing it out myself, I sat and wrote out the wingman assignments. Once complete, I posted them up in the barracks. ********************** Flight Simulator Training.
Lieutenant Rose, Flight Leader Ensign Killjoy Rose's Wingman
Lieutenant RaycerX Ensign Stargazor RaycerX's Wingman
Training to commence on the First cycle in Flight Simulator Training Room 1. All to attend unless feeling the effects from the Hex-I shots.
Captain JustinB Black Squadron Third Officer * * * Lucian Before the SIM session began, Captain JustinB was talking to the Warriors, explaining the function of the "ship-to-ship" system that most had never used. With turbo lasers, they weren't really needed, except under very unusual circumstances. Major Lucian walked into the room, and JustinB gave him the floor to give a briefing to those present.
“First of all, I’ve just come from the Med Lab. Major BatGal is recovering from an especially bad reaction to the Hex-I. Doc’s hoping to have her back on her feet later in the shift.
“Next, according to my earlier discussion with Captain JustinB, some of you are likely to be assigned to fly the short range escort mission in the Blasanick system. Your current simulation is an attempt to model what you may be facing in this system. You’ll find that your targeting scanners are largely inoperative, except at very short range. Instead of picking up your targets at the usual range, you may get them at 10 to 20 percent of that range…and that’s a maybe...due to the radiation in the upcoming system. Dr. CureMode and Solon are working to correct this, but I wouldn’t count on it. Visually, you may be able to see an incoming enemy…or friendly…ship at less than a kilometer, and that’s only if the lighting is right, or if you’re turned the right way, or any number of other factors. Blasanick is a giant red star, but it’s very dim, so you’ll need to constantly stay alert to make sure you know where you are with respect to your fellow Warriors. Unknown ships suddenly appearing either visually or on scanners could be fellow Warriors coming or going, could be Cylons, or could be something entirely unknown. The ship-to-ship missiles can lock on to a target after they get close enough, but you've got to visually send them in the right direction first, and if your target jinks or turns too quickly, you'll be out of luck with that one. In the event they miss, they'll be set to explode after a set distance so you don't accidentally run into it later." Laughter filled the room for a moment until the Warriors saw the half frown on Lucian's face. "I'm serious. Remember, you'll only have four missiles, so if you must shoot, shoot well. After you finish this SIM, get some rest. We’ll be coming out of the jump in about 9 centars. Good luck.”
As he walked to the exit, JustinB approached with a quick question. After answering it, so Lucian said, “I’m heading back to the Bridge. Call me if you need anything.” * * * JustinB The moment Major Lucian left, Captain Resonant and myself went into the Control Room. Once everyones hatch had closed, I gave the order to Launch!
On the monitors, I could see all the pilots expressions and amazement as they saw what the Blasanick System would look like.
"Frack, the Major wasn't kidding when he said the visibility of the system was bad" said Ensign Killjoy.
"Cut the chatter, Ok patrol lets fly in extended line formation. That way we get a concentrated forward scan," Rose said with authority, "but remember to also use your eyes otherwise you might just bump into something and end your short careers." ****************
Back in the control room I turned to Resonant and suggested, "lets have a cylon patrol of say six raiders and place them 100 metrons in front of them."
"Six raiders it is," Resonant replied. * * * Lucian "Excuse me, Captain," said Resonat with a grin. "I appreciate the thought, Sir, but I'm still just a Lieutenant." * * * JustinB I turned to Resonant and said, "Sorry for that Lieutenant. With both Major BatGal and Captain Kris out of action due to the Hex-I shots, I've been run ragged."
"Not a problem, Captain. Now lets see what happens when we place those raiders into visual range." * * * Charybdis Memo to Cpt. JustinB:
Captain, I noticed on your flight roster that you have listed Ensign Stargazor. Are you sure you didn't mean Stargazer?
Not only is Ensign Stargazor still on administrative duty (meaning he is off flight duty) due to possible charges pending, but you might need to check if he is medically fit.
Check and report back...

JustinB I was watching the progress of the Flight Simulation when my communicator went off. I turned out to be a memo from the Lt Colonel. Apparently, I had missed something when I was writing up the assignment. After a quick call to Major BatGal, I wrote a reply to the memo.
***********************
Memo to Lt Col. Charybdis:
Sir, Since receiving your memo I have made enquires into status of Ensign Stargazor. Since Major BatGal and our 2IC Captain Kris have been struck down by the side-effects of the Hex-I shots, I wasn't aware of all the facts regarding the Ensign.
After conferring with Major BatGal, who is now almost recovered, you are correct in fact Ensign Stargazor is off flight duty due to the possible charges pending. I have also since found out he is medically cleared, but is attending the Med-Lab periodically as a precaution.
Below is the reviewed assignment:
Captain JustinB Flight Leader Ensign Killjoy Wingman to Capt. JustinB Lieutenant RaycerX and Lieutenant Randrius. Wingman to Lt.RaycerX
Sir, I sincerely apologise for my error.
Captain JustinB
***************** As I posted the memo to the Lt. Colonel, I felt like such a novice. My first time in charge and I stuff it up. I got up too leave just as the Warriors in the simulator were about to get a visual of the raiders.
"Lieutenant, I will be back in a few microns. Do not do them any favours and let them off lightly".
"Yes Sir!" came the reply.
I made my way to the barracks and posted the new orders. ***************** Due to new information gathered there have been changes to the Short-Range Escort duty.. Captain JustinB Flight Leader Ensign Killjoy Wingman to Capt. JustinB Lieutenant RaycerX and Lieutenant Randrius. Wingman to Lt.RaycerX
The Back-up Flight is as follows:
Lieutenant Rose, Ensign Vexis Wingman to Lt. Rose Lieutenant Phlandor , Ensign Ursiaon Wingman to Lieutenant Phlandor .
As I walked out of the barracks, I saw Randrius and said to him, “Randrius come with me, I have to get you in the simulator training A.S.A.P.”
Upon arrival to the simulator room, I guided Randrius to the nearest simulator. "Just know this, you will have to use your eyes and maybe the missiles. Good Hunting." Randrius gave me the thumbs up and I went into the control room and spoke to them through the intercom. "Be advised, Lieutenant Randrius has joined the simulation."
I just hope nothing else went wrong. * * * Killjoy The guys in the simm control room were not cutting this flight group any slack at all, and when Stargazer was pulled from the simm in the middle of things it didnt help matters any. Due to a few less than honorable maneuvers by the Cylons and an error in judgment on his own part, Killjoy found himself cut off from the team, with three of the "tin heads" bearing down hard on his position. Even with their flight skills being tweaked up by the guys in the control room, these simulated Cylons still had the same weaknesses as the real ones, and had to deal with all the same visual and electronics problems as the human pilots. Keeping this in mind Killjoy tried to find a solution to his problem. Killjoy made a reach for the weapons control panel, and reconfigured one of his missiles. When it was released the engine would not fire, rather the missile would just drop free of the Viper and lay there. If he was right, the Cylons would be depending on a heat signatures, rather than the normal visual scanners that they normally use, too track their targets. After his adjustments were complete, he released the "mine", reduced power to the Vipers engines to idle and positoined the ship so the the drifting Missile was in a direct line between himself and the simulated Cylon trio. Then he put out a distress call he knew the "tin Heads" would hear. The signatures from the Vipers three power plants would cover any trace of the cooler and drifting trap. No Cylon, real or simulated, could pass up a sweet shot like this on a Viper. Just as he had wanted the three Raiders took the bait and kept their course. One of the lead ships struck the "mine" and exploded in a bright flash, the ship that brings up the tail of the trio, was damaged when in came into contact with the debris and shrapnel. As for the third, well he just didnt want to play anymore. "Killjoy to Callisto, flight control, disregard request for rescue. The situation is now under control." With that the screens went dark and the cockpit opened. The simulation was over. Killjoy took off his helmet and joined his group on deck, it seems they all made it through this simulated nightmare courtesy of Capt. JustinB and the simm control team. As they stood and talked about things, Capt. JustinB emerged from the control room and took the group to a briefing room. Maybe now they will find out what the need for this high radiation medication and no electronics flying felgercarb is all about. * * * Randrius As the simulator screen lit up, Randrius suddenly found himself immersed in a major dog-figt, with several Raider already turning to track his craft. Randrius knew he had something to prove, tat this leg had taken nothing away from hiis piloting skills. Randrius stomped on the left rudder and pulled up on the stick. A Raider coming in from above suddenly found himself on the business end of a missile at point-blank range. Randrius veered towards anoter target even before the first was dead. A generous spraying of laser fire on a group of Cylons chasing another Viper reaped another casualty. A Raider settled in on his tail and refused to be shook free. Randrius tried a nice little trick a friend ad taught him. He lined up with another Raider and went as if to ram it. The trailing Cylon couldn't see the other craft because his own ship was in the way. When the fighter ahead fired, Randrius put his craft into a steep dive and saw a fash as the Raider was taken out by friendly fire. Randrius veered up to face the next, checking his watch showed only twenty secton had passed since his entrance. * * * Lucian Lt. Nat shook his head. Randrius had missed the initial briefing, so he cut in on the comm channel, “Randrius, I’m disengaging your lasers. This is a Colonial missle only exercise. The Cylons may or may not have operational lasers, you just never know. Happy hunting!” * * * Amy I was in the O-club, sipping at the horribly watered down ambrosia, realizing that I didn’t stand much chance of getting a buzz. Looking around, I noticed the place had more or less cleared out. Which was fine with me. I was out of the loop, liked being out of the loop, and didn’t expect much conversation from anyone anyway.
I thought back on the little wrestling match I had had with Charybdis, and smiled. It was pretty funny, even if we did get caught by the Commander. My smile faded as my mind wandered toward where my personal life stood. Where exactly did it stand? It had been so long since I’d seen Najinn, I wondered if there was anything left between us to even worry about anymore. And Charybdis. Where exactly did my feelings lie? I tossed back a little more of the ambrosia. I might as well be drinking straight boraton.
I spotted several warriors from my squadron as soon as they walked in. We made eye contact, and they wandered over. I looked up and smiled as they took a seat.
“You two look like hades,” I observed.
“Yeah?” Ensign Manatee replied, “You’d look like hades too if you’d just had your Hex shot.”
Ensign Grammit nodded. “Haven’t had yours yet?” he asked. “Oh yeah, that’s right. You’re not cleared for the mission. What’s wrong, Hex might mix with your medical condition?”
I had a blank look, and gave it to both of them. “What in the world are you talking about?”
Grammit swallowed. Manatee whispered softly, “uh oh.”
“What?” I asked.
“Well,” Grammit began, “Big feldgercarb is going on. Big mission is on the board. Gold got it. Talk is the Major wanted you on it but the Lt. Colonel scrubbed you ‘cause of the bad leg.’”
I could feel the heat building in my face. Why was I reacting like this? I didn’t want any part of any missions anymore. I could hear the last part of Grammit’s sentence ringing over and over in my head. “Lt. Colonel scrubbed you ‘cause of the bad leg.’”
Manatee chimed in. “Yeah, talk is this mission is huge. It’s all just rumor, but a lot of the guys think we’re coming up on the fleet. Too bad you’re missing out.”
“That little SNAKE!” I errupted, shooting out of my chair. I was out the door in half the strides it should have taken me.
“Something I said?” Grammit asked.
“Her leg looked fine to me,” Manatee replied.

Amy (Takes place before the briefing starts)
I can’t remember the last time I’d gotten so angry. Lots of moments flashed through my head. The time I almost shot Brie when I burst in on her in her quarters—Yeah, but I was mad at myself then. The last fight I’d had with my parents—Yeah, that was it. Last time I had seen them before I joined the academy. A single tear formed and ran down my cheek. How I missed them!
I reached Charybdis’s quarters and stabbed at the code angrily. After a moment the door slid open and I stomped in, only to find the place empty. Bridge. He must be on the bridge. Should I? Yes. This wasn’t going to wait. I spun and stalked out of the quarters and headed for the bridge.
As I reached the bridge I glanced around, and saw the Lt. Colonel studying a monitor screen. He looked up as I got nearer. A look of happiness fell quickly as he saw my expression.
“We need to talk,” I said flatly.
“I know,” he replied. “I’ve said that more than once. But we have a briefing about to start—”
“Now,” I said, herding him to the hallway. Once we were out there, I lit into him, pushing him against the wall. To hades with rank, to hades with it all.
“What’s the idea of scrubbing me because of my leg?” I barked at him. “You of all people knew that I was fine. I kicked your ass with it just a few microns ago! Or did you forget that already?” I took a step away, then turned back on him. “Talk is the fleet might be out there. Don’t you think I’d want to be in on that?”
“Two days,” I said, holding two fingers up for emphasis. “Two days I was put on hiatus for. I could have been cleared with a com call. You knew I was fine.” My heart was pumping as I spat out the words. “I am so tired of you protecting me, trying to keep me out of harms way. I’m a warrior for lords sake! Major Brie wanted me to go!” I didn’t know that last part first hand, but went with it anyway.
“I can handle that Hex feldgercarb. I can handle anything. How many times must I prove it to you?” * * * Charybdis I stood there and let Amy vent at me. Same old Amy, blow off steam without realizing the reality of what she was saying.
WHen she finally stopped, I replied, "Rules are rules. Amy. The commander wanted a mission ASAP and when Brie submitted your name, the computer came up with the fact that you had not been cleared by Med Lab because of your leg. I really wish you'd get this idea about me protecting you out of your little head!" I started losing it. I had enough of this spoiled brat routine trying to throw her weight around. I could be a VERY good friend to have around the ship, but you did not want to get on my bad side. Ask Cpt. Lazant about that.
"In case you're wondering, this IS the military. We have a code of conduct to abide by and regulations are regulations. If you want to be cleared for the mission, go ahead and do it yourself. I'm not going to have any part of getting you killed!!!" With that I turned and headed back for the bridge leaving Amy standing by herself in the corridor… * * * Amy "Fine!" I yelled at his back as he walked away. "I WILL go get myself cleared. And it'd serve you right if I did go get myself killed!" I knew right away that that made little sense, and I turned and pounded at the wall in frustration. I smoothed back my hair, and leaned against the wall for a good long time before I finally walked away.
In my haste I had forgotten some things back at the O Club, and I headed back there to get them before heading for medlab. I walked in, finding Manatee and Grammit still in there.
"Well", Manatee said, "you look the picture of pleasantness."
"Frack off" I snapped, reaching for my things.
"Is that any way to talk", Grammit observed, "after how we tipped you off on what was going on?"
"Thanks for the favor", I replied with an air of graditude, "but next time don't do me any favors, K?"
Manatee chuckled. "You stomped off so fast, we didn't even give you the best part."
I stopped, and gave them both a look of exasperation. "I know I'll regret this. What?" I asked with a sigh.
"They cleared Stargazor for an escort flight, and the dude's facing charges!" Grammit laughed loudly.
"You're not sucking me in on that one", I said, shaking my head. "I'll admit it's weird, but no charges have been filed that I know of." I stopped suddenly, and looked at them both intently. "Where DO you guys get your information from?"
Both their faces dropped, and they moved to get up in a hurry. "Gotta go Lieutenant", Manatee muttered as they headed for the door. I just stood and watched them walk away. Yeah, rules were rules. I shook my head and walked out, heading for medlab. * * * I muttered to myself as I walked toward the medical department. I continued to mull everything over, everything that Manatee and Grammit had told me. The more I thought about it, the more I couldn't figure it out. I had a bum leg, but Charybdis knew it wasn't bum yet bumped me from consideration anyway. Stargazor has possible charges pending, plus glow-in-the-dark eyes, yet he is cleared to go. Nope, I guess I'm just not seeing the big picture here. Maybe the Lt. Colonel's lips isn't where I should be kissing... If I ran into Stargazor, I'd have to ask him what his secret is.
Of course, I could have been up on charges too for how I talked to a ranking officer, but that was the whole blurry thing about Charybdis and I. Where exactly is that fuzzy line and when is it considered crossed and when not? I suppose I'd just consider myself lucky that all I had to worry about was getting this dumb leg thing cleared up.
As I rounded the corner to medlab, I saw that I was in luck. The same medtech that had given me the two-day hiatus was in the hall, taking names again. She looked up at me as I approached. I smiled.
"Still backed up, huh?" I observed.
"Yeah, till next yahren I think", she sighed. "What is it this time, Hex shot?"
"Uh, yeah", I said, remembering that I'd need to take one. "I'm also here about the leg."
"Name?"
"Amy. Lieutenant."
After a pause, the tech had the info on her handheld. "What about the leg?"
"It's really doing much better." To illustrate I put full weight on it, bouncing up and down for good measure. "I'd like to waive that hiatus I'm on. I'd hate to be clogging up the works here with something so trivial."
The tech nodded. "This is trivial, believe me. You really should have a proper examination though. Tell you what. I'll delete the hiatus, but you still have to come back as scheduled."
My face brightened. "That'd be great! Will I be reactivated?"
"Yes. We have people far worse off than you. Now let's see about getting you that Hex injection." She went back to full attention on the handheld, punching keys and looking at the display screen.
I waited patiently, and wondered what Charybdis might think when he'd see I was back on active duty. After how I acted, a part of me wondered if he'd even care. I tugged at the ends of my skirt nervously as I waited, wondering just how far over the line I had really gone. * * * JustinB Watching the pilots mix it with the Raiders, I was overjoyed at their success. Maybe, just maybe if we ran into any cylons I wouldn't lose anyone. The newest member Ensign Killjoy and configuring his missile into a mine was quite inventive. Lieutenant Randrius's manoeuvre to make a raider destroy on of its own.
Rose to was holding her own. While manoeuvring behind the first of two raiders, she used lasers to no avail. Instinctively she switched to missiles and fired. Even though it didn't hit square on the previous laser bursts helped destroy the raider. Lieutenant Stargazor who was on Rose's wing, did the same with the same result.
Lieutenant RaycerX had early on formed with Ensign Killjoy when the Ensign requested help. Together, they accounted for half of the second wave of raiders we introduced.
After thirty centons of training, I brought the simulation to a close. When everyone got out of their simulators, I told them to meet me in the Black Squadron Briefing Room. Before Stargazor left I said, "Ensign Stargazor could you come here please."
"What can I do for you Sir?" Stargazor asked.
"There's no way else but to say this. Due to information in regards to possible charges being laid against you, I have to inform you that you have been scrubbed from Escort Duty. During the mission you are to report to Major BatGal or Captain Kris for administrative duty. I'm sorry Ensign." I said.
"I had been expecting this to happen sooner or later Sir. By your leave Sir," he said. "Dismissed!" I replied.
Upon reaching the Briefing Room, seeing all those involved in the upcoming mission there, I made the announcement. "Ensign Stargazor has been taken off Escort Duty. Needless to say his past behaviour has caught up with him," after a deep breath I continued, "For all of you who are wondering why you are receiving the Hex-I shots and the simulator training the reason is this. The Blasanick System has relatively low visible light emissions and its high UV radiation in the non-visible spectrum, long-range electronic sensors will have limited effectiveness. We will be effectively be operating in heavy shadows with visual capability only. Also, we have been taking "Hexachlorinal Iodinazone" to shield ourselves from the effects of the radiation. The use of the ship-to-ship missiles is because our lasers are less effective in this system. So each Viper will be loaded with four each, so use each one wisely. Lieutenant Randrius will be taking Ensign Stargazors assignment and Rose, Ensign Vexis fills Randrius's spot. Any questions come up and ask me individually. No more than one drink at the O’Club and I will be informing the bartenders your limit. Anyone who disobeys that order will find himself or herself in worse trouble than Stargazor. Make sure you get a good sleep before the mission. DISMISSED.” * * * Seeing that no-one had any questions, I left the briefing room going over the sim results. As I turned the corner I bumped into Rose. "Sorry about that Rose, I was just going over the sim results. You did pretty good in there, "I said.
"Yeah well you made it pretty hard for us in there," Rose said as she placed her arms around me, "how about some, how should I say it, some extra personal training."
'For someone who wanted to go slow, she has sure jumped a gear or two' I thought to myself. "How about I meet you in the O'Club in five centons. I have to give the results to Major BatGal for her evaluation, so she can pass on her comments to the Lt Colonel."
Rose gave me a peck on the cheek, "Just hurry Okay. I want to spend some time with you before the mission."
I made my way to Major BatGal's office in a hurry.

Charybdis I hated to do it, but rules are rules. Why was that phrase coming back again and again. I thought back to the hallway scene with Amy when I had to say the same words to her.
What is wrong with these Warriors? This is not how it used to be in the old days.
I filed the official proceedings report against Ensign Stargazor with the Commander. A copy was sent to Major Lucian as well.
Official charges include insubordination, disobeying a senior officer and stealing and unauthorized use of a Colonial Viper.
Respectfully submitted to Commander Sheba. * * * Stargazor Stargazor heard about the upcoming court martial. He kept to himself in his bunk, not to get in trouble any more. So he decided to train by doing some push ups and martial arts . Aldo his moves wore of an expert he liked to train every free time he got, sometimes people would watch as he moved with grace and deadly precision. * * * Artus Artus sighed. It looked like he and a few others would be on waiting duty. So he called out to Stadia, Amy and Marcus: "Okay guys, it looks like we're going to have to wait this one out. But since we are supposed to be on 'unofficial' standby, I suggest we find us a spot near the launch bay to hang out. I'll bring the pyramid deck. But best leave the ambrosia behind because we are supposed to be vigilant. Besides I wouldn't want to bore anybody with stories about what happened to my father. Why do I have such a bad feeling about this?" * * * Amy I'd taken care of what I needed to do get back on duty. I'd gotten clearance from medlab, and also recieved my Hex shot. I hated Hex, but I fought off the side-effects pretty well. I felt a little queasy, but it didn't last long at all.
Excited to be back on duty, I looked forward to being on the Gold team Major Brie had originally wanted me on. I hustled back to Gold Barracks and changed into my warrior's uniform, then moved down the hall to where the orders were posted. If anyone was going to be out there when the fleet was found, it was going to be me....
My face fell as I read the orders. Back-up flight. Just great. I just shook my head as I re-read the list. I was basicly a B-teamer. By the time I saw space the fleet would be found and the celebration in full swing. I'd probably be pulling a patrol during the party. Just great. My mood began to simmer as I thought of the lost opportunity, and where Lt. Colonel Mr. Rules fit into it all.
Just then I heard a voice calling out to me, as well as to Stadia and Marcus. I looked over toward Artus, who was also a B-teamer on the mission.
"Okay guys, it looks like we're going to have to wait this one out" Artus was saying, "But since we are supposed to be on 'unofficial' standby, I suggest we find us a spot near the launch bay to hang out. I'll bring the pyramid deck. But best leave the ambrosia behind because we are supposed to be vigilant. Besides I wouldn't want to bore anybody with stories about what happened to my father. Why do I have such a bad feeling about this?"
I looked Artus over. Looked like a good guy. Confident, maybe a touch cocky. But I knew I liked him right away. I began to walk toward him. Stadia I knew, for we'd been in scrapes before, but Marcus I didn't know at all, and the same went for Artus. But it was time to end that right now. We might not see any action, but hanging out in limbo with these guys wouldn't be so bad. Might even help me forget my having fought with Charybdis.
"Hey Artus" I said in greeting. "Pyramid, huh? Is that the game with the funny shaped cards, where I usually end up with no clothes by the end?" * * * Artus As Artus was proceeding towards the exit of the briefeing room he was suddenly approached by one of the good looking female warriors. He hadn't seen her before, but she seemed nice enough. "Hey Artus" she said in greeting. "Pyramid, huh? Is that the game with the funny shaped cards, where I usually end up with no clothes by the end?" Artus made considerable effort not to let his jaw drop. Picturing this woman without her uniform was really messing with his mind. To think of the kind of things they could do... He really tried to keep his head screwed on and stay cool, if only he could think of what to say... "Lieutenant Artus?" she asked. "Ehm, eh , yeah. Sorry about that. I was thinking about the mission there for a minute." Amy smiled. "A very recomendable concern lieutenant. I do hope your worries about our squadron members will interfere with your ability to play cards. My name is Amy, by the way." "Very pleased to meet you. But don't worry, I could keep my concentration on a game of Pyramid with the entire Cylon fleet shooting at me. So don't worry, I'll be keeping my mind on you. Ehm, the game I mean." All the while the only thing poor Artus could think was that those leges really went all the way up... * * * Amy I broke out in a big smile as I listened to Artus stammering. It was funny, and sort of flattering the way he looked at me. It felt good to smile. The last time I smiled so big it was while wrestling with Charybdis. Followed so closely by that ugly shouting match. I knew I couldn’t have it both ways with Charybdis, and I didn’t want special treatment, yet that was the very thing I expected from him while my name technically had still been on the inactive list. I had expected him to approve me for the mission, not treat me like just another warrior and bump me as ineligible. So who was being unfair? And why didn’t it seem to matter all that much right now?
"Very pleased to meet you,” Artus was saying. “But don't worry, I could keep my concentration on a game of Pyramid with the entire Cylon fleet shooting at me. So don't worry, I'll be keeping my mind on you. Ehm, the game I mean."
“Well,” I replied, “I’ll admit I’m not the greatest card player around, but know I can count on you for some pointers here and there, right?” I laughed. “Besides, being on stand-by isn’t the best time to be caught out of uniform, if you know what I mean!”
If I’d have to sit out what could be the mission of the yahren, then I’d want to at least have some fun. Artus seemed to be a good place to start looking for fun. Over the loudspeaker I heard the order being given to launch the mission. Frack, it should be me out there! I buried my rising irritation deep down, not letting it show at all.
I stood next to Artus, and took the Pyramid deck from his hands. “So, where do we set up for a game? Is this going to be four-player, or just us two?” * * * Artus Amy stood next to Artus, and took the Pyramid deck from his hands. So, where do we set up for a game? Is this going to be four-player, or just us two?
Artus shuffeled his feet uneasily. "well, the traditional number for a game of Pyramid would be four. Especially since we are supposed to be on standby. However, Major Brie can't keep us on standby forever, so should you feel that at any time it would be more appropriate to be caught out of uniform together, be sure and let me know."
At that Amy just laughed.
Artus was starting to think that this might eventually get him somewhere. So if only he could keep his head cool and present everybody with his most dashing, cavalier smile.
"Well then, " Artus continued; "should Stadia and Marcus wish to join us, we'll be setting up a game in ready room four, so should the need arise we can get to our vipers within a few sectons."
After having said that he offred Amy his arm in the most gentelmanly way he could muster. "If you would allow me, my dear, it would be my pleasure to escort you there." * * * Amy In a very gentlemanly way, Artus offered me his arm. "If you would allow me, my dear, it would be my pleasure to escort you there", he said in reference to ready room four. With a smile I took hold of his arm, and off we walked.
We reached ready room four and found it deserted, which wasn't surprising since we were the only gold team on stand-by. Though I knew Stadia and Marcus could be joining us at any moment, I found myself glad for some time alone with this charming warrior. I tried to separate my anger at Charybdis from my growing fondness for Artus. I wanted nothing to cloud or influence my judgement. But it was hard to do. I still loved Charybdis, right?
"It really burns me that I'm not flying with the A-team" I said as I sat down with a sigh. "I was qualified, more than qualified."
Artus sat down in the chair opposite mine at the table. "Then why aren't you out there?" he asked.
"Good fracking question." I was going to say more, but decided against it. I wanted to have fun. So instead I laughed, and gave the deck a quick shuffle, easily dividing, sifting, and shifting the cards to insure a good mix. Truth was, I'd learned pyramid long before I ever left the agro ship. My dad was a darn good player, and I guess the skill got passed down, if such a thing was possible. I know I did spend a good amount of time sitting on his knee, watching him play with the other farm hands and techs. I looked up at Artus while I finished the shuffle and smiled.
"Okay then" I said, setting the cards into the middle of the table. "What are we using for stakes?"

Artus "Okay then" Amy said, setting the cards into the middle of the table. "What are we using for stakes?"
Artus smiled. He really liked the way this was going. "Well don't worry about not being out there at the moment. I'm also probably one of the best pilots on the Callisto, even though I say so myself. Brie probably wan't some of us aces up here so we can fly in at the last moment and save everybody. Brsides, who wants to play in the snow?"
Amy had trouble holding her laugh back.
"Allright. I usually prefer not to play for money when playing with friends. It rather tends to get ugly. I do hope you don't mind me calling you a friend, do you? You see if we were 'just' squadron mates I'd have no problem at all taking all your money...."
Amy wasn't quite sure if she should smile or frown.
"Anyway, " Artus continued ; " as I was saying, I don't like to take money from my friends. So therefore I suggest we play for something more, shall we say, insubstantial. I suggest the following. The player that loses a hand to the other has to answer one question truthfully. And it has to be the absolute truth, no matterhow embarrasing or personal the question is."
"Ah, " Amy said ; "but how can we tell if the other is telling the truth?"
"We'll just have to trust each other's word as a warrior won't we?" Artus replied.
Amy looked somewhat doubtfull.
"Besides," Artus went on; "if the truth is a little too much for you, we can always play for articles of clothing, if the lady so preferes."
With that Artus held out one of his home made fumarillos; "They look awful and smell even worse, but according to Holodoc they are really bad for you. And that's the point after all, isn't it?"
Seeing Amy hesitate Artus put the home-made fumarillo on the table and lit one himself.
"Well my dear, are these stakes to your liking?" * * * Amy I laughed as I considered Artus’s proposal of the stakes for our little game. “So it’s truth or dare then? Tell the truth or lose some clothes!” I really started to laugh. The idea that someone could walk in and find us half-naked with a pile of clothes on the table between us, or the alert sounding and us franticly trying to sort out what belonged to who! Funny stuff! I did wonder though, at what sort of question he might ask, or what I’d think of to ask him.
I reached out and took the fumarillo Artus had put on the table. I stood up to slum a light from him. “Here’s an easy bit of truth,” I said as he stood, and we got mine lit. “It’s been a while, but I’ve smoked these before. Hard not to experiment when you grow up on an Agro ship and tobacco is one of the crops!” I sat back down. “Of course, it wasn’t given much priority compared to growing food, but I think some of the farmers would have protected the tobacco first if we’d ever been boarded!”
“It’s been a little while, though,” I continued, “so don’t be offended if I cough, or roll on the floor gagging or something!” With anticipation I took a puff, and smiled at Artus. “Home-made,” I said at last, “Very nice.” Artus smiled with satisfaction.
“Okay,” I said. “Terms accepted.” I slid the cards toward him. “Deal?” Artus slid them back toward me. “Ladies first,” he replied. I gave the cards a final shuffle, and dealt our hands. I picked mine up and immediately frowned. What a load of feldgercarb! I could only hope that I’d dealt Artus the same smelly pile. Oh well. I sat back and puffed on the fumarillo, feeling a little strange that my mom wasn’t flying around the nearest corner to swat it out of my mouth. * * * Marcus I had just been asinged to gold squadron and was very excited to be there. I had just recently just been given the rank of ensign and was out to make a good impression on my commanding officers.
I had just recived my first assignment and was glad to get one. Unfortunatly we were put on stand by. “Oh well, mabey next time. For now we wait.” Artus wanted to play pyramid with the rest of the team in ready room four. That sounded like a good idea. “ It will give me a chance to get to know the others better.” I better get to the Gold barracks and get my cubits for the game.
As I begain to head for ready room four and the pyramid game with Stadia, Amy, and Artus he noticed that he had not been issued all of his uniforms. “Frack, Now I am going to have to visit the quartermaster and get the rest of my uniforms and going to be late to the game. I do not know what any of them are like yet but hope they are understandable.” So marcus headed for the quartermaster’s office.
Once at the quarter masters office I got every thing I needed with out to much of a hassle. Now I need to get the gear stoed in my locker and on to the game. * * * Artus As Amy took a puff from the cigarillo Artus had offred her, she smiled at him and said it was very nice.
Artus could not help but be surprised. Somebody actually likes his homegrown cigarillos? Well, there's a first time for everything. Then again, this could be a bluff on Amy's side, wich would mean that she was a much better pyramid player than Artus had anticipated. Better watch this girl.
She slid the cards towards Artus. But Artus wasn't that stupid. As an experienced player she obviously wanted to test him. But he wasn't falling for that one. No, he put on his most charming smile and slid the cards right back over.
"Ladies first" he insisted.
Amy gave the cards a final shuffle and Artus thought by looking at her hand movements that it was definately a movement she was used to. Artus looked up to her face and imediately felt that he could drown in those eyes. No you idiot, no. This is not a time to get all mushy. Concentrate on the game. Maybe later you can try to make a pass at her. Right now concentrate on not making a fool of yourself. Was a warriors uniform always that tight around the chest?
Amy dealt the cards, and Artus tried to keep a straight face when he picked his cards up. By the Lords of Kobol. Artus could not believe he had seen a worse hand in all the years he had been playing this game. He tried to keep smiling as he looked over at Amy. The moment she picked up her cards she immediately frowned. Did she really think Artus was that stupid. It was the oldest trick in the book. If she really thought Artus would fall for that one... She must be holding nothing short of a straight Pyramid in her hands. Those lovely, slender, delicate hands.
Concentrate Artus!
Allright, Artus. Play it cool. He looked at his own cards and frowned.
"Hm, " he said;"I seem to have forgotten something."
Amy looked up
"And what would that be?"
Artus smiled again.
"I seem to have forgotten to ask you for a kiss for good luck before the game began....."
At that moment the door opened and Ensign Marcus bustled in.
"Hello everybody, sorry I'm late, but I had to stop at the quatermaster." * * * Marcus As I entered ready room four for the game I noticed Artus and Amy had already delt the first hand.
“Sorry I am late got caught up at the quartermaster’s getting the rest of my gear.”
Having just seen the promotions posting I decided to congratulate Amy on her promotion.“Congratulations Amy on the promotion to captain.”
“ I am ready to play if I may join in once you are done with this hand.”
Artus looked a little upset at something but I could not figure it out. I just sit a wait out this hand.
Amy looked like a nice person even with the pyramid face. I think I am going to like them both. * * * Amy As Artus and I studied our cards, he said that he seemed to have forgotten something. I couldn’t imagine what that could be. I looked up, and asked him, "And what would that be?" My eyes locked on his expectantly. It was the first time I noticed what a nice color they were.
Artus smiled. "I seem to have forgotten to ask you for a kiss for good luck before the game began....." I had barely time to react when there was a commotion at the door, and in walked Marcus, another part of our team in standby limbo.
“Sorry I am late,” Marcus said, “got caught up at the quartermaster’s getting the rest of my gear.” In spite of his pyramid face, I noticed Artus’s expression turn to disappointment. Marcus continued, “Congratulations Amy on the promotion to captain.”
My expression turned to one of sudden surprise. “Get out! I made captain?” I asked, my voice a little higher than usual. “You smoking plant vapor?” Marcus assured me he wasn’t high on anything, and that he’d seen the posting. I sat there, momentarily forgetting the card game. “I am ready to play if I may join in once you are done with this hand,” Marcus said, gently bringing the game back to my attention.
“Oh,” I said. “Sure thing. We may have to alter the stakes, Artus, seeing we are now three.” He still looked disappointed. “And too bad about that thing you had forgotten. Now you’ll never know what might have happened had you thought of it earlier!” I smiled and took a big puff on the fumarillo. Captain, I thought. I’m a captain!
I looked at Artus, but whatever he was thinking was hidden behind his pyramid face. Turning my attention to my miserable hand, the best thing I could do was ditch most of it and hope for the best. I picked three stinkers and put them face down on the table. “Dealer takes three,” I said, picking up three cards from the top of the deck. I looked over at Marcus, who’d taken a seat, then at Artus, and smiled.

Artus "Dealer takes three." Amy said, picking up three cards from the top of the deck. She then looked over at Marcus, who had taken a seat, then at Artus, and smiled.
By the lords of Kobol, Artus thought to himself. How did I get myself into this felgercarb? First I get this sexy female warrior to play a risky game with me, I'm just about to check out wich way the ball is rolling, when suddenly another warrior joins the party, making me look stupid and I also find out the babe I was just trying to get it on with made captain. This just isn't my day.
Oh, and my cards are really bad too, lets not forget that. It seemed more and more that his mood was turning the colour of his eyes; blue.
So the best thing he could think of was to try and charm himself out of this one again. He smiled apologetically at Amy and folded his cards in front of him.
"It would seem you have me for this one. My cards were so bad there was not one of them worth riding on. So by the rules of the game this hand goes to you, and you are free to claim your prize at any time convenient to you. Congratulations on the promotion by the way. Should I be calling you sir now? Anyway, things turning out the way they are maybe its for the best that I fold so soon seeing as it will give us an opportunity to re-asses the stakes at hand and it will allow ensign Marcus to join in on our little game. By the way, hello ensign, it's nice of you to join us. Glad to have you around."
Artus did think to himself; couldn't he have come in just a little later.. * * * Amy I smiled as I watched Artus smooth-talk his way out of finishing our hand of pyramid in front of Marcus. He seemed a lot less comfortable now that we were a trio.
“Well,” I said, “I’ll bet you’ve never folded before such a horrible hand as the one I was holding!” I laid my cards face up on the table. Was that a groan I heard? I didn’t have anything, even after picking up the three new cards. I sat back and looked at the two warriors as I puffed on the fumarillo. It wouldn’t have taken much to beat me. Idly I picked up the remaining deck, and flipped through the next few cards. Nearly in sequence were base cards for the start of a pyramid, and all of the same color! I couldn’t help but laugh as I turned them around for Artus to see. Maybe I should say a special prayer to the lords for Marcus coming along when he did. I wonder what question Artus would have asked? Whatever it was, I would be answering it right about now.
I set the deck back down. “And please, neither of you call me sir! ‘Captain’ when you have to, and Amy the rest of the time would do fine.”
“So, do we change the stakes, or keep them the same? You know, Marcus, Artus here had a really interesting idea of what to play for.” * * * Artus Amy set the deck back down. "And please, neither of you call me sir! Captain when you have to, and Amy the rest of the time would do fine. So, do we change the stakes, or keep them the same? You know, Marcus, Artus here had a really interesting idea of what to play for."
Artus grimaced.
He quickly collected himself though: "What the captain is trying to say is, in lieu of actually playing for money, I suggested playing for questions. The person who loses has to answer a question from the winner truthfully. It's going to be a bit harder to do with three players, but I think we can work something out.
Phew, Artus thought to himself, looks like I'll be able to talk my way out of this one. Now about that personal policy of not kissing a superior officers' butt. That might need some changing.
"Nevermind," Artus continued ;"where are my manners. Ensign Marcus, may I offer you one of my homegrown fumarillos? When I say homegrown I naturally mean homespun from engine reject. Doesn't have the full flavor of an actual fumarillo, but Holodoc assures me that they are very bad for you...." * * * Marcus As Amy and Artus finished their hand. Amy was saying “You know, Marcus, Artus here had a really interesting idea of what to play for.”
Artus responded with "What the captain is trying to say is, in lieu of actually playing for money, I suggested playing for questions. The person who loses has to answer a question from the winner truthfully.
Artus offered me one of his home grown fumarillos. That sounded good. “Thanks Artus that sounds good I have not had one in a sectar.” “ As for the stakes they sound good to me if we are all in agrement.”
Latter I would have to find out why Artus seemed so upset with me when I came in. I Hope it was because I was late, but for now he seems to be friendly.
“So whos deal is it.” * * * Amy I was just about to answer Marcus when suddenly the alarms went off. Red Alerts were sounding, and Gold Squadron was scrambling! I jumped to my feet, butting out the fumarillo on the side of the table.
"It's what we've been waiting for, guys! We're live!", I said excitedly as I headed for the door of the ready room, Artus and Marcus right there beside me. "Let's hope we can pick up our game later!" We ran down the hall toward the launch deck. * * * Skyler Skyler and Thunderhawk loaded some last minute gear in their Vipers tiny storage areas. They laughed and joked back and forth about finally getting to fly their Vipers again.
Brie walked by and checked on them as she made her way to her own Viper. It would only be a short while before they would be launching, once again heading into unknown dangers, risking their lives. That was the part Brie hated. Risking the lives of her Warriors, her friends. She could always accept the promotion to the Bridge, but she knew she would hate it there even more. At least here, she was with them, facing the danger with them, risking her life with them. On the Bridge she would truly be on the sidelines, watching, not doing.
Skyler climbed into his cockpit, pulled on his helmet and sealed the canopy. He looked to his left and gave Thunderhawk a thumbs up, which he returned. Looking to his right he saw Brie was in her Viper as well. After double checking his instruments one last time he opened the channel...
"Major Brie, Lt. Thunderhawk and myself stand ready."
Brie looked to her left and smiled. She glanced to her right, and received the thumbs up from Lt. Granfury.
"Roger Capt. Major Brie to Core Command, Gold Squadron, Alpha Flight stands ready to launch. We await your orders."
