The Hunger Games DVD is being released today. I avoided this movie in the theaters since I didn't think it was something that would interest me, but a few weeks ago, I started reading the first book, and within a week, had finished all three books in the Trilogy. I was quite surprised that I really enjoyed the books despite the topic.
Has anyone read the first book and seen the movie, and if so, what did you think? Did they do a good job translating the book to the big screen? And, are you looking forward to the next movie?

It's out on DVD already? Wow, I need to get out of the house more...
I haven't read the books or seen the movie, so I can't really give a personal opinion. I do know people who love both.

Uh, get out of the house more? Ha ha!
Seriously, I saw signs for it at WalMart on Saturday, but didn't catch the release date. They announced the new releases on the radio on Tuesday morning, and THG topped the list. I suspect it will show up at my house as soon as my wife or daughters find out about it.

The books are on my "to read" list, but that list is long. I still haven't found the time to read the first novel in my sister's series and number four was just released. Shhhh, don't tell her...

I haven't read the books but I've seen the movie. I thought it was really really good. I'd heard some things about what's in the book and I was afraid of how those things would be handled, but the violence was held to a graphic minimum, probably to open the movie to a wider audience? I think the books were aimed at young adults?
The movie was really involving and went fast for a movie of that length. I won't spoil any details so I'll just say it's compelling and my heart was out there the whole time.
Guess that's a lot of words to say practically nothing? ha! Loved the movie! And Jennifer Lawrence is a treasure.

I finally saw the movie on DVD. I didn't see it in the theater originally because I found the topic a bit disturbing and just didn't think I'd like it, but my wife and daughters read and liked the books, so I ended up reading all three in a row and found them to be much better than I expected.
Overall, I found the story to be a very good adaptation of the book and well acted. While essentially a story of violence, that violence was sometimes seen at a glance so that it wasn't generally gory. There were some good special effects, but overall, they were generally secondary to the story, and were easy to overlook in a some cases. Parts were a bit unbelievable, but the most stark problem to me was the scale of District 12.
Panem is the country that has risen out of the ashes of the post-apocalyptic United States. The new country was divided into 13 districts plus the Capital (before one attempted to break away and was reportedly destroyed), but District 12 (which was noted to be the smallest) consists of just one little town in all of Appalachia? Personally, I think it was a just poorly used plot device by the author that a few paragraphs could have made much more believable, or that a few shifting images on screen would have explained. Then again, the author made important use of the same poor plot point in one of the sequels; again, that would have taken a bit more writing to work out the issue.
Despite that little (pun intended) issue, I will be looking forward to the next movie in the series.
P.S. One more thing: I do hope that they don't split the third (and final) book into two, or like The Hobbit, even three, movies. While there's good material with which to work in the third book, I really don't think there's so much that it can't be covered easily in one episode rather than two or three.
