I have no idea what this will mean. First of all, I think there's no way they are going to get a new Star Wars movie out by 2015. Principal photography would have to take place this coming summer!!
Unless they immediately start ramping up the production team and story ideas to get ready, I don't see anything until at least 2016, but again, all is speculation right now. I didnt' even know LFL was up for sale!!
And to think, all this over Star Wars while BSG languishes away doing nothing...it's sad.

It will be interesting, but it does put the franchise in the hands of an organization that will expand it, and hopefully, protect it, in the long term. I hope the sale means that the existing SW books remain canon, and that, if Luke and our old friends are featured in the next chapter(s), we'll finally get to see Mara Jade on the big screen. I'll nominate Karen Gillan from Doctor Who for the role, but she'll probably be too young and probably too tall (she's 5'-11 or so) if they have Mark Hamill reprise the role as an older Luke.

My personal feeling is that they are going to go into totally new areas with the future. A lot of the EU is great, but there's no way they are just going to put out a movie based upon novels that are already out and are quite old, to say the least (ex: Zahn's trilogy).
So I would guess that much of the Eu will be null and void...

Although they have already stated that these movies (7,8 and 9) will be original stories, I feel there has to be some nods to at least some of the EU novels. I also think, although beautiful and all that, Karen Gillan is too young. Mara is supposed to be about the same age as Luke. Maybe a year younger or so (possibly older too)
The EU I feel they HAVE to work in is Zahn's work. Not every detail since 1, 2 and 3 nagated soem of it, but the high points. Thrawn reforming the Empire, Mara Jade for sure, And the Solo Kids.
My feeling is you will see these movies set 20 to 25 years after ROTJ. Although, I feel we will see the Classic Characters, the forucs will be this New Generation.
And as for 2015, I think it's gonna happen, I bet the preproduction is further along then you think. If you think about the changed 3d Release schedule, there has been some thought in highlighting 2015. 2013 will see Eps 2 & 3 released, 2014 will see Eps 4 & 5 and early 2015 will have 6 leading the way for the release of 7.
My feeling - Expect to see Director and casting coming fast in the coming months.

I think you might have hit the mynock on the head! IF this was all planned out already. I have seen some rumors that a director and writer have already been chosen. so, if this was in the works for some time now, they could have put together some stuff to gear up for a new production. Now all they needed was the word and we got the word on Oct. 30th...
I think they will use some of the EU, they would have to be crazy not to, but it will be original stories...

I think that even though it was just officially announced that this has been in the works for a while, including 7-9. As already said, there's the timing of the 3D re-releases. Plus George worked very closely with Disney on the updated version of Star Tours at the parks. (We're at 144 times riding it, BTW, and we don't even live there anymore!)
I have a terrible feeling that little of the original cast will be involved. Anthony Daniels will, of course, because SW fans will revolt without him. As far as the rest who knows. I can picture this as being a next generation type of trilogy. That wasn't a Trek reference, it was a cliché.
And if they do use the originals remember that Mark Hamill is short, only about 5' 6". I'm not sure why I know that. I remember when they had the Star Wars props exhibit at the Smithsonian. They had his costume from Jedi and I couldn't believe how small it actually was!

I have now heard reports that it could involve all three major actors (Mark, Carrie and Harrison). I never thought Harrison would do it, but I apparently have been proved wrong. At least he has indicated that he is interested.
As for timeline, I saw two reports yesterday one saying next gen including Mark, Carrie, etc. and another further than 50 years beyond ROTJ! The speculation is exciting!
