As Hawke limped into her room, Brie was more than surprised. The last she had heard he was wanted and considered armed and dangerous, something about attacking Commander Sheba. Obviously Astraea’s reappearance wasn’t the only thing that everyone had forgotten to tell her during her confinement. “Captain, please, come in and sit down. I think we have some catching up to do.” The sound of the cane hitting the floor was offset by the constant beeping of Brie’s heart monitor. “Have you been watching IFB?” Hawke shook his head no. “Okay, I’ll catch you up on my end really quick. The charges against me were faked to catch Pierce, who tried to take over the fleet. He kidnapped me and took me to the Agro Ship, where I was wounded enough to end up here. I’m not Amy’s mother, no matter what the rumor is, and I apparently had a heart attack while Charybdis was here, which I’m still trying to decide if I should blame him for or not. I need one more minor surgery on my leg, where I was shot. Oh, and I’m back as head of Gold Squadron, although I don’t think there’s a whole lot I can do for them from here.” She took a breath. “That’s my story, Captain. What’s yours?”

“That’s my story, Captain. What’s yours?” Brie says. "Well... M-m-major..." I could see her face light up with surprise. "Alot... has... h-h-happened. First…of….all...,it’s… no… longer…Captain…W-w-what… was… the… last… thing …you… heard… about.. m-m-me?" Apparently I picked up a stutter... First time I noticed that... Great! Another thing to work on… “The last I had heard you were wanted and considered armed and dangerous, something about attacking Commander Sheba.” She says. I fill her in on what has happened the last twelve hetari.. My capture by the Cylons, the stroke, the implant, attacking Commander Sheba, everything. “S-s-so, I… was… forced… into… retirement… because …of… the… stroke. I… don’t …know… what …to… do… any… more. All… I… know… how… to… do… is… be… a… B-b-black…Ops…officer.”

Skyler made his way to wards the life station. He had almost made it with out getting caught by the brass, but he was spotted and had to turn in his report on the Livestock ship before he could be released. As he entered the life station he saw the two Black Shirts guarding the door and knew thats where she had to be. He made his way over, only to be stopped by Doc BJK.
"Skyler, Hawke is in with her at the moment... only one visitor at a time, until she regains her strength"
"What do you mean.... regain?"
"Well, step into my office for a micron and I will explain as best I can."
Skyler eyed the door and hesitated...
"Don't worry Major... you will be able to see when Hawke leaves and I promise your next."
"Yes Ma'am." Skyler turned to wards the Doctor's Office "And Doc... its just plain ole Captain again.... "

“Retirement?” Brie repeated. “That’s pure felgercarb. So you can’t fly a viper right now. Neither can I, and no one is forcing me into anything. The first thing you need to do, CAPTAIN, is stay away from the grog. That’s not going to solve your problems, and it can cause a whole bunch of new ones.”
“I...”
“Shh,” Brie said quickly, “I’m not done. You and I have had a...” she searched for the right word, “an interesting professional relationship. I’ll admit that I haven’t always liked your methods, but I also know that you’ve always had the desire to do what’s best for what’s left of the human race. As long as I’m leading it you’ll always have a place in Gold Squadron. With Amy out of commission at the moment, how would you feel about becoming acting Third Officer? I would of course have to get it approved by Commander Sheba, but after I almost died because of Commander Apollo’s plan, I think I have a little bit of leverage at the micron. We could work out the details later. What do you think?”

Sheba..Lords, how was she taking this? We hadn't talked since I tried to kill her back in Med Bay. Third in Command? I weighed the options for about a micron. "Thank....you...M-m-major,... but... I... don't... think... you... understand. My... reflexes....,vision... and... mobility.... are... s-s-severely.... limited. I'd... be.... 45%.... effective...at.... best...I can... do.... therapy.... until.... the... bovines... come... home.... It... won't... be... any... different.." I said.

Brie smiled. “I’m not talking about a physical position, Captain.” She slightly emphasized the rank once again. “I need someone who will be able to help with the ins and outs of everyday squadron affairs. Skyler’s just returning from a mission, he’s due some R&R. It’s going to be a while until I’m back on my feet. Now, if the stroke caused more damage than just reflexes, vision and mobility, if mentally you can’t handle such a position, I understand. But I need someone that I trust helping me out, and for some strange reason I think that that person is you.”

"In... that... case... I... accept.. Thank... you,.....Major.. I appreciate it. What... is... my... first... assignment?" I ask.

“There’s actually three things that I need you to do for me,” Brie started. “The first is for you to get some rest, take the time to get the grog out of your system. The second thing is that obviously I’ve missed quite a bit since I left for the moon mission. I want you to find every file on anything that’s happened related to Gold Squadron and sneak it, I mean bring it to me here. Just don’t let any of the medical staff know what you’re doing. They don’t seem to realize that not knowing what’s going on is actually adding to my stress level.”
“The...third?” Hawke asked.
“I saw that look on your face before,” Brie said. “I want you to talk to Commander Sheba. Make sure that everything is okay between the two of you. It’s probably the most difficult of the three assignments, but it’s also the most important.”

Lords, I'll do anything for Brie except that. I REALLY didn't want to face Sheba right then. I must have shown it on my face because she said to me, "Relax Captain. You don't have to do it right now. Go get some rest. Report back to me with the materials tomorrow at 15:00." I sighed, stood up, righted myself on my cane and gave her a salute. Or a reasonable facimile thereof. "G-g-good n-n-night Major." I said as I swayed a bit. I walked out of her room and passed Skyler. I stopped by him a bit too abruptly as my cane slid on the floor and I slipped almost falling. That didn't help the room spin. Right then it got worse. As well as the dizziness set in the nausea. I fought throwing up on Skyler's shoes. Fortunately there was a wastebasket nearby. I just barely made it. "You can go in now Skyler." Doc says. Skyler eyes me and just shakes his head sadly and moves into Brie's room. I leave and go to my quarters. i just barely make it inside the door and I promptly pass out hitting the floor with an audible thud.

As Hawke left, cane in hand, Brie was momentarily reminded of another man with a cane, a man who had changed her then young life forever. She flashed back to one of the darkest moments of her life. As the door to her room opened again she found herself wiping away a single tear.
She hoped she hadn't just made a mistake.
