New BSG Story Available

Hi everyone,

It's been several years since I've had the time or inclination to write a new Battlestar Galactica story, but a friend recently read one of my old stories and encouraged me to finish an idea that has been on the back burner for quite some time. The new story takes place in the Colonial Fleet just over two yahrens after the Cylon attacks on the Homeworlds, and features Lieutenant Urdea, who many yahrens later became the Chief Security Officer aboard the Callisto, as the main character of the story. Due to his medical condition, which is finally explained in the story, he is unable to be reinstated as a Colonial Warrior, so he becomes a detective in Fleet Security aboard the Galactica. As the story begins, he is assigned to solve what appears to be a petty theft, but all is not as it seems, and the safety of the rag tag fleet may be put at risk if Urdea fails to solve the case….

I've recently started posting the third story in my series, The Rescue, about two Colonial Warriors on a long range recon mission who detect a seemingly ancient building on a small moon. They investigate but encounter an unexpected and very unwelcome surprise. When they don't return as expected, a special team is sent to bring the Warriors home…

Parts 3, 4, and 5 of The Rescue are now available, with the rescue mission beginning and a hint of the Cylon plan being revealed.

Edit: 7/24--A hopefully humorous Interlude (despite the subject) and Part 6 are now posted, too. With some additional writing and edits, the story has been extended to Chapter 11, with everything including the end now in final draft form except for Chapter 9. I'll be posting the next Chapter sometime on Sunday if all goes as planned.

Chapter 9 of The Rescue was completed and posted, with Chapter 10 now posted, too. However, to reach the conclusion I wanted, the story expanded a little more, so now it's 13 chapters in its final form (unless I change it again!). For those who participated in our storyline on this board, we know how stories lines often took on a life of their own and ended up being a lot longer than we originally envisioned. Chapters 11, 12, and 13 will be posted in 4 to 5 day intervals over the next couple of weeks to finish the story. I'm currently considering another story that would follow almost immediately on the heels of The Rescue. I've done a good draft of the first chapter, have the second chapter in rough form, and have an interesting outline for the remainder of the first 8 chapters. After that, though, there's just a really fuzzy idea, so I'm not sure if it will ever go anywhere.

The final chapter of The Rescue has been posted on fanfiction.net. I think the story has a good twist at the end, but I may have just read it too many times while trying to make sure it was complete and may be looking at it through Lucian-colored glasses! After some edits to get rid of a few glaring errors, I think it's now in final form, so if you've caught up with the story here, please check it out.

I've started posting my next story, entitled Shore Leave, with the Prologue and Chapter 1 now available. The rough outline is now complete for the story, but there's a lot of thought and lots more writing that still needs to go into this one. The basic summary is:

While the fleet resupplies in the Timoralan system, Starbuck finagles some planet-side leave to finally spend a few relaxing cycles with Cassiopeia but their holiday takes a serious turn that threatens to ruin their time together…perhaps permanently.

Huh, now those stories sound interesting. I was bored/done with the Death of Apollo comic series. Cylons, another basestar... yawn... But your stories deal on what I like to read about, everything else. Shore Leave, fun topic.

Thanks, Jubal! I've been trying to add a new chapter to Shore Leave each week, but I had to go out of town this past weekend for a special event, so I'm running behind. Chapter 4 is almost complete and will probably be posted on Friday night, and then the action starts. is complete and has been posted, but it had to be split due to its length.

So far, all of my stories posted to FF are very different from each other, and, in general, from regular BSG fan fiction. "Warrior with a Badge" was an extremely fun story to map out and write, but in recently rereading the story, I realized it almost has an untentional tinge of NCIS/Castle/"insert favorite TV detective show here" to it. I guess that's just the nature of that type of story.

I also had a lot of fun with "The Rescue", which originated based on a single line in "Warrior with a Badge" and some old ideas I'd never gotten around to using. Someone might say that it is a bit similar to a sci-fi shooter-type videogame, but since I don't play those, I'm not really sure!

For anyone who might be following my story Shore Leave, Chapter 7 will be posted on Friday. Starbuck's leave finally arrives, and he's off to the planet to see Cassie. As the old joke goes, "and that's when the trouble started."

One other thing about the current story is that I've used alliterative chapter titles that have been a bit of fun. You never realize how difficult it is to come up with appropriately vague or suggestive two word titles with an alliteration for each chapter that actually mean something until you try it! Some are easy (Sudden Surprises, Friendly Finagling), but others are more difficult (Disparate Dinners, Leave Laments). I'm still debating which form of the title to use for Chapter 7. Whichever, I think it's going to be one of my favorites.
