Thought I would start a thread for any discussion on the upcoming two Star Wars movies. I guess the biggest news is that Colin Trevorrow was replaced as director for Ep. IX by JJ Abrams! JJ seems to play well in other people's boxes so I guess he was a good choice to direct the final sequel installment.

JJ should do a good job, but please, (PLEASE!), no shaky cam or lens flash, please!

I saw The Last Jedi just before Christmas and really liked most of it. Luke's role for parts of the movie felt somewhat out-of-character (as Mark Hamill implied in his comments), but years as a hermit could have affected his overall attitude.
That part aside, the story was generally much better in my opinion than VII, though there was a sad, bittersweet feel to it through much of the movie due to Carrie Fisher's passing just over a year ago. I don't want to post any spoilers, but I do feel that they need to consider their options carefully before moving on to IX. Personally, as much as I hate it, I think they need to recast someone in Leah's role to wind up the arc. They might just address her "recent" death offscreen at the beginning of the movie OR be able to use a little previously unused footage to stage her death onscreen and show how that affects the Rebel forces going forward, but I'm afraid that would cast a pall over the movie that would take it away from where it needs to go. Ignoring her absence just isn't an option.
MINOR SPOILER and Suggestion:
*
* down
*
At one point in the movie, Rebel forces send out a call to their allies for help.
With that in mind, the return of Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian answering that call could help amelioerate Leah's absence to some degree. He's been doing mostly voice work (according to IMDB) for the last couple of years, but I suspect he would jump at the chance if offered if he's physically able. I suspect that much of the role could be tailored to his physical capabilities. He's about a week older than my father, who would be all over the role in a heartbeat IF he was an actor and IF he were asked.

Well, the movie did very well at the box office, but the fan backlash has begun. Definitely NOT the best Star Wars movie ever as was touted but, hey, you can't win them all! Sad about Luke..we'll see how ep. IX ends it all...
I guess I'm now looking forward to the Solo movie but not having any hopes crushed because I do not have any expectations about it!! Time will tell...

Solo trailer is out, and it isn't drawing rave reviews. Hoping... www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNW0B0HsvVsRelease date is May 25th. I heard someone joke that the projected digital/home video release date is June 25th.

So far here is what I think of the movies: Ep VIII - Basically a rehash of Ep IV. Loved Poe (glad they didn't kill him off). Han was great again. Loved the "Traitor" guy. JJ shows once again he can't science. Rogue One - That is a amazing movie. You know what would have made it more amazing? Someone living. Ep IX - Loved it at first and as I think about it I just get angrier and angrier. Star Wars? Try "Gang Wars". Really did go small scale. Luke was cool. Solo - That is a amazing movie. Just a fun movie. Lando does some scene stealing. Han really is a terrible smuggler. Not sure I will bother with Ep X. Love the New Hope era movies though.

I didn't like VII all that much because it was so much a throwback to A New Hope.
Rogue One is the best of the new batch.
VIII had some good points but enough bad that they're going to have to do some serious work in IX to save the trilogy. That's probably the way it should be, but usually you're trying to save the heroes/alliance/whatever rather than the view of the three movies as a whole.
Solo -- I skipped it because of the bad taste in my mouth over VIII. My wife saw part of it somewhere and said she didn't really like the part she saw so it turned her off on watching the rest. Maybe I'll catch it someday...

Catching up on this thread. The first trailer for Rise of Skywalker was pretty neat and the nod to Palpatine perhaps coming back? Pretty cool. We will see what JJ has up his sleeve.
You should watch Solo, it's not the best, but it is a good little Star Wars movie on its own...
