Dolet tried several more times before hailing the Callisto again.
"Callisto, this is Dolet, no response from unidentified Viper. There does appear to be one lifeform aboard, but I can't really make out who it is. I also can't see any movement from over here."
"Understood," Geenie replied äny other markings on the outside of the Viper?"
"Well, there is the usual battle scarring where the ship has been hit by laser fire. But wich of our Vipers doesn't have that by now..."
Geenie interrupted him
"Are you sure it's one of our Vipers?"
Ensign Dolet had another look
"Well, it certainly looks that way from over here."
"M'am" Liod in turn interrupted "shouldn't we bring the Viper onboard the Callisto? The pilot could be hurt."
Geenie sighed.
"We have to make sure that it's the genuine article first, Liod. For all we know this could be some Cylon trap. It could be made to explode the moment we get it on board the Callisto. Or the pilot could have some infectuous disease...
No Liod, we have to be very carefull."
Liod looked away.
"Sorry m'am.."

"Callisto?" Dolet interrupted, "I've run another scan, and the pilot reads human. If it's a Cylon trick it's top of the line. It sure doesn't feel like a trick to me. You should see this viper. It's been through hades and back."
"No visual on the pilot though?" Geenie asked.
"No" Dolet replied. "It's canopy glass is darkened. I think it's a combination of laser blasts and the automatic tinting mechanism. It's probably stuck on dark."
"Convenient if it's some sort of ruse" Geenie said, thinking out loud.
"Still" Dolet continued, "the vitals I get on my scanner read the pilot and viper are nearing the end of the line. Permission to tow it in?"

Genie looked over to Major Lucian, the senior Bridge office present while Commander Sheba was meeting with Commander Apollo. Lucian had been frequently monitoring some strange energy readings at the maximum extent of the long range scanners. So far, the crewman in charge of making the scans had not been able to get a good reading on them, or have an idea what, if anything, they represented. Genie called Lucian over and quickly filled him in on the request.
Lucian took a quick look, then said, "Have Ensign Dolet latch on and begin towing toward Beta Bay. He'll need to be traveling relatively slow to keep the landing from killing the poor pilot, but have him be ready to release at a moment's notice. If we give that release notice, he'll need to hit his turbos at once, because the explosion from that Viper probably won't be far behind." He didn't add that he hoped that Dolet would be able to make it fast enough that the pilot wouldn't be dead before arrival.
Turning to Lieutenant Zeus, he said, "Do a full scan on that Viper. If you detect any significant anomolies, particularly energy buildups or anything that could be a bomb, let us know." To Captain Swensson, he added, "Captain, have your rear, Beta Bay, laser turrets, target on that unknown Viper. Track but do not fire. Do NOT, repeat, do NOT fire without my direct authorization."
Finally, Lieutenant Aegina put him through to the Beta Bay crew chief in charge. "Sergeant Wassel," he said, "we have an uncontrolled Viper being towed in for landing in Beta Bay. Prepare emergency measures...."
On completing the instructions, he waited, like most everyone else on the Bridge, to see what would happen.

"Roger Callisto" Dolet said, "Got all that. Preparing to tow... now."
He felt the slight drag on his viper as the tow beams locked onto the disabled viper behind him. Gently he began to move forward, and saw that everything was in order. This was just like in the sims!
"Got a good clean lock on it" Dolet announced. "I'm heading in." Then, after closing the com he said softly, "Hold on, whoever you are. You'll be home soon."

Lt. Aegina stood close to Genie. "Why don't they just use the unmanned CORA drone?" she asked nonchalantly.
Genie turned to back to the Lt. and gave a half shoulder shrug.

Meanwhile aboard the unknown Gold Squadron Viper Dolet was towing behind his craft, a small blue light started blinking on the control panel. It's reflection in the tinted windows cast eerie shadows over the face of the craft's pilot. His breathing wich had been steady until now seemed to stop....
And then with a chortle it started up again.
The angry red scar running over the man's left eye was the only thing that seemed to contradict the fact that the pilot was peacefully asleep.

After confirming that Doc BKJ had an emergency Med Team on the way to Beta Bay, Lucian was surprised to see Major BatGal's raise an eyebrow when she caught his gaze. Lucian walked by several stations, observing each for a moment, before he made his way around to her station. "Lucian," said BatGal in a low tone to avoid being overheard, "do you think it's a good idea for Ensign Dolet to tow that Viper in? What about a C.O.R.A. drone?"
"That would be my first choice, too," agreed Lucian quietly, "but I'm going along with Dolet's request for several reasons. First, Dolet's scan indicated the pilot may be badly injured, and possibly fading. It's a pretty good way out there, and Dolet's there and ready to do it. It would take more time for the C.O.R.A. to get there and get it back, even though it flies faster. Those few centons might possibly make the difference in whether that pilot lives or dies. The landing will probably be a little rough, but the C.O.R.A.'s landings usually are, too."
"Possibly so," replied BatGal, nodding, still a little wary. "You said several reasons?"
"Dolet's got a decent training record, but just a little experience so far. This will be a good exercise for him, especially since he took the initiative to ask for it."
Seeing her continued hesitation, Lucian added, "And I guess you can add the other factor which has to do with the C.O.R.A. drone's safety clamps: if we discover it's a Cylon trick, I'm counting on Dolet to do a quick release and turbo out of there before we toast that Viper!"
"Hope you're right, Lucian," whispered BatGal as Lucian stepped away. But Lucian didn't hear. He was saying a silent prayer for both Dolet and the unknown pilot.

Skyler was sitting by Brie's bed... he had been there since the micron Doc had allowed people in to see her. Her condition hadn't changed, still in a coma. It was his fault, he should never had left her... even if he was her assigned Doctor. His comm beeped...
"Capt, we have a Viper with Gold Squadron markings and a weak life sign on board. Dolet from Black Squadron was already out on patrol, he is towing it in."
"Thanks Geenie, I'll be up in a few microns, whats the ETA?"
"Unsure at this time Skyler, towing is slow going at the micron, you have a few centons."
"Copy, see you in a few."
Skyler looked back at Brie.... the moment he feared had arrived.... he had to leave her side. He exited her room to find two frazzled looking Security Officers. Jared and Enoch.
"You two remember the new rules?"
"Yes Captain, no one but Doc BKJ is allowed access with out Doc BKJ being with them."
"Very good...." and Skyler walked out of the life station, nodded to the two heavily armed Infantry troopers in the corridor who saluted and quickly returned to the task they volunteered for....

Dolet began to grow impatient as he continued at a slow rate of speed, towing the disabled viper behind him. He wanted to kick in the turbos and race back, but he knew that wasn't possible. His turbo trail alone would cook the nose of the already battered viper as it sat tucked in close behind him.
Dolet drummed his fingers on the joystick, trying to keep his speed steady and his nerves in check. He glanced at his readouts, and thought he detected a change in the scanner focused on the mystery viper. He wasn't sure about the changes, but at least the indicators showed that the pilot was still alive.
"This can't be a trick" he muttered to himself, but as he inched closer to the Callisto he began to break out into a sweat... "Mind on something else, Dolet" he said, nearly singing to himself, "Mind on something else..."
He thought of Logan, and the last he'd saw of her, and that jerk Hawke who'd ruined the whole date. He hadn't seen either one before he left for patrol. He wondered if Logan would even speak to him again, and what the brig would be like if he ever ran into Hawke again...
His scanner lit up, and he focused on it, a drip of sweat running into his eye. The Callisto was starting to come into range...

In her Ready Room, Sheba concluded the conversation with Commander Apollo by handing him a file. "As distasteful as it is, it's all spelled out in there. Unfortunately, we need to act soon."
"Understood. I'll read through this as soon as I return to the Galact--"
The beep interrupted him, and Lucian's voice followed, "Commanders, sorry for the interruption, but we have a couple of developing situations that you should know of."
"I'll be right there," replied Sheba. As they rose to exit the room, Apollo gently pulled Sheba to him. Their eyes locked momentarily before their lips did.
* * *
A few moments later, both Commanders came onto the Bridge. "Situation?" she asked Major Lucian, as she took charge.
He quickly told her about the mystery Viper and the mysterious energy signatures deeper in space. Both Commanders looked at each other and said, "Cylons."
Apollo quickly exited, heading to his shuttle to take his place on the Galactica. Sheba watched him go, the sadness weighing on her heart, but the thought of her responsibility for her ship, her crew, and the Fleet quickly took its place. "How soon will Ensign Dolet have that Viper in for landing?" she asked.
"He's getting close, Commander," replied Genie nervously. She was showing her apprehension about having Dolet land with the Viper in tow.
Lucian noted the concern in her voice and said, "We've got a C.O.R.A. drone on standby, Commander, in case you want to try to use it to help with the braking effort when they land. With Dolet towing it in this close, we've saved valuable time for the injured pilot." Speaking lower to Sheba, Lucian added, "I didn't want to undercut Ensign Dolet's confidence by sending it out, but it could help."
Sheba nodded, looked at the long range scanners, and then picked up a communicator from Geenie's station. She said, "Ensign Dolet, this is Commander Sheba. You're doing great on the tow, Ensign. That's good experience that very few Warriors ever get. Now, because of something beyond our control, we've got to get you back aboard the Callisto faster than planned, so we're going to give give you a little help for the last little bit. A C.O.R.A. drone is about to be launched to rendezvous with the Viper when you get a little closer to the landing bay. The drone will latch on to the rear of the Viper to help give you some braking action as you enter the bay and come down on the deck. Otherwise, that unpiloted Viper will have a tendency to run right over you as you tow it into the bay. Pick up your speed a little, but don't kick turbos. We need both you and our mystery pilot back here in one piece."
