I made my way slowly to the bridge. One of my fears was moving to the Bridge. I didn't like the idea of not being able to fight or going on patrol into the unknown. Being stuck on the bridge was something I hopefully wouldn't have to do. Upon arriving on the bridge, everyone was busy so I took a seat out of the way and watched.

Brie walked quickly to the bridge. It wasn't a place where she liked to spend a whole lot of time. She realized it's importance, of course, but she had seen more than one squadron leader requesting transfer there in their prime and she just didn't get it. The only person that she could understand wanting to be a bridge officer was Major Joey, she had a family, and missions and babies weren't a good mix. It was the last place on the Callisto that Brie ever hoped to be assigned to. Sitting and watching things unfold as others died in battle just wasn't something that she could ever picture herself doing.
The first thing that Brie did when she made it to the bridge was approach Joey. Friends and former roommates, Joey was one of the few members of the bridge staff who didn't make Brie feel like she was in the way. "Any news?" she asked cautiously.
"Not from Skyler," Joey replied, not looking up. "Fallel’s ship has just landed, but I don’t have any info on anything else. Why don’t you just stick close, Brie? Take a seat, it shouldn’t be too long until we know something else.”
Glancing around, Brie noticed Major JustinB sitting out of the way. There were a couple of empty chairs around him. Brie felt as if her heart stopped for a moment. What had she been thinking? Just go over there and tell him that it was a bad idea, she thought to herself. We can’t go out on a date. What the frack was I thinking? She was pretty sure that Justin saw her. Plain and simple, tell him that we can’t go out, not now, not ever. No way. She walked over to where Justin was seated. She cleared her throat. Just say it, Brie. “Um, how was your patrol? I hope that you didn’t run into anything unusual out there.” She took the seat next to him, forgetting what she had originally planned to say.

I was surprised when Brie walked onto the Bridge. I had the distinct feeling she wasn't comfortable being any where near here. She went over and spoke to Major Joey for a few centons. She then looked over my direction and stared at me. She nervously walked over to me.
“Um, how was your patrol? I hope that you didn’t run into anything unusual out there.” She took the seat next to me.
"No nothing interesting this time. Mind you, Patrols can be boring sometimes, but I would rather be in a cockpit than stuck doing the same old thing cycle after cycle on the bridge. I know maybe one day I might have to, but until that day I will be piloting my viper through thick or thin protecting the fleet."

"I know what you mean," Brie replied. "I'll never understand how someone can serve just one term and then move here. This place gives me the creeps, even more so since it was on the Callisto bridge that I was arrested and all that felgercarb started. But I guess that I'll have to prepare myself for the inevitable, since I'm getting older." Brie looked away, slightly embarrassed. "Sorry, I don't really mean to bring up age so often. It's just on my mind a lot lately, I'm not really sure why." Brie knew exactly why, it was because she was so much older than Justin.
“That’s okay,” Justin said.
Brie waited several uncomfortable microns before speaking again. “I hate the waiting. That’s the worst part of this job. I can't help but thinking that I should have been the one leading this mission. Lords, so much has happened since the last time I was in my viper. Or I should say in any viper, because I'm pretty sure that mine's been reassigned." She paused, what a stupid thing to say. She couldn't help but wonder what she and Justin would spend an entire evening talking about. "But that should be easy enough to take care of. Just more paperwork, another bad part about the job." She grinned. "But it still beats the bridge."
"Hey, the bridge isn't so bad," a female voice said. Major Joey was approaching them. "I'm one of the few people on this ship who has been able to juggle a military career and still have a family. It's hard, but it can be done. I can't imagine how much I'd be worrying about my kids if I was still leading a squadron. I feel like I have it all. Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt."
Brie decided not to comment. "What's up?" she asked instead.
"Oh, we have Dropship One on radar," Joey informed her. "They're still out of communication's range, but it should only be another centon or so. They'll be cleared to land in Alpha Bay if you'd rather wait there."
"Thanks," Brie said. "That's a good idea." Joey immediately returned to her duties. Brie stood and took a couple of steps. "Are you going to the bay or are you waiting here?" she asked Justin.

"Well, I think it might be an idea to go down to the landing bay in case they need any help in case there are wounded," I replied. "But what was Major Joey going on about family and a military career?" I asked.

"Oh, that," Brie said as casually as possible as they walked towards the landing bay. "Joey and I used to be roommates, back before they did the expansion project. Technically we were roommates, I guess you could say. Her husband had received family housing and he was staying there with their three oldest children. Joey was pregnant with their fourth, and stayed in our room only when she was on duty. I used to tease her, saying that she was trying to have it all. And with four kids I'm glad she made the decision to move to the bridge instead of staying with the squadron. Having lost my own parents in battle I know first hand how tough it is on a child." It dawned on Brie that she knew very little about Justin or his past. How could she agree to go out with someone that she knew nothing about?

As Brie continued to walk with Justin she realized that they were both avoiding talking about their upcoming date. That was fine with her, there was a time and place for everything. She had known her entire life that duty was more important than personal matters, and a large portion of her squadron returning from a Cylon baseship mattered a whole lot more than their forthcoming dinner. Still, it felt like they were both avoiding mentioning it. She hated this stage, hated the awkwardness, and wished more than just about anything that they could move past the first date jitters.
As they approached the landing bay it was already crowded. Medical staff with all kinds of equipment were standing by, as well as people who served various other positions. She knew very well that unless he were badly wounded Skyler would be on the second dropship, the first one would be mostly wounded and people assisting them. She dreaded what she knew she was about to see. "They'll be landing in five centons!" she heard someone call out.

Out of nowhere a chill ran down Brie's spine. She stopped in her tracks and without thinking grabbed Justin's arm. "Something's wrong," she said, more to herself than to Justin.
"They'll be out of decom in a couple of centons..." Justin said.
"No, it's not the mission." She shook her head, but couldn't shake the feeling. "I need to check something out. I'll be back in half a centar, if anything important happens here, please contact me. I have my personal communicator with me." Without giving it a second thought, Brie took off at a run towards her quarters.

Brie wasn't winded as she opened her door. It was strange, she should have been, but she felt like something had been pushing her on. With her hands shaking she checked the medlab to see if there was news about Amy. She was fearing the worst. The same old thing popped onto her screen. Captain Amy; still in surgery. No update. Brie stared, wondering why she had thought that something would be different. She and Amy had a connection, almost a sixth sense-like quality. Brie was sure it had less to do with biology and more with their friendship. Brie continued to stare, sure that the information was wrong. Something had happened, she was sure of it. She blinked, then squinted at the screen. It had changed. A feeling of dread pouring over her, Brie read the updated report. Captain Amy; surgery complete. Condition; improving. Currently in Recovery Room Five. When out of Recovery will be allowed visitors from immediate family only until further notice. A smile spread across Brie’s face. It wasn’t what she had expected, Amy was getting better. Things were good, even if it looked like it would be a while until she was allowed to see her. Brie entered her bedchamber and opened her closet. She took out the heels that Boleman had given her. She scratched out a quick note:
Amy,
Don’t ask how I ended up with these, but I thought you’d like them. Something for when you’re “on your feet” again, so to speak. Just don’t tell your mom that they’re from me because I’m sure she’ll hate them.
I’ll stop by as soon as I’m allowed. I miss you, my friend.
Brie
After placing the shoes and the note in a box, Brie opened her door. A young cadet was walking by. She recognized him as a member of the group from her recertification. “Could you do me a favor?” she asked.
“Sure, Ma’am, anything,” was his reply.
“Take this to the Med Lab,” Brie instructed. “Make sure they know it’s for Captain Amy. If you leave it with the medtech at the front she’ll make sure that Amy gets it.”
“Right away, Major,” the cadet replied. He took the box and hurried down the hall.
Brie checked her chrono. She still had 20 centons before she had said she would be returning to the landing bay, and there was one more thing that she wanted to check...

Brie called up Justin’s file. It was pretty much what she had expected. “There's got to be something in here that can get me out of this date," she mumbled to herself. "'Parents: Zeth and Mia killed on the final attack on Caprica when he was 4 yahrens old'...four?" Brie sighed. "There's that fracking age difference again. 'Raised on the Rising Star by...' let's see, let me skip down a bit... 'Enrolled in the Callisto Academy. Was made Cadet Leader following a debate with Teacher of Military Tactics. In all years he was made a Cadet Leader...........has demonstrated that whether academically or in simulations would place his life on the line for his fellow warriors. JustinB would be well suited as a Warrior'...blah blah blah... 'Infractions: Bottles of Ale were found under his bed. Stated they were not his. When asked whose they were he would not give name of offender'....who cares... 'JustinB has used his position as Cadet Leader To Gain Unauthorized Access to Flight Simulators After Hours on numerous occasions. Action Taken: COUNSELED And REPRIMANDED.' Capital letters, someone was trying to make a statement. Not a big deal, though. What else...'Graduated Second in his Class. Upon Graduating Requested Assignment To Black Squadron, Battlestar Callisto...'" Brie sighed. "Besides minor pranks at the Academy and poor taste in squadrons there's really nothing here." She decided not to dig any further, there was nothing bad there, no hidden problems, no classified sections like she used to have in her own file. "I guess he really is what he seems," she said out loud.
Before returning to the landing bay Brie sent a general message to all of Gold Squadron. At least it looked like it was to the entire squadron, it was mostly for Lieutenant Artus. She hoped that he would read it, he deserved to know.
