Hush and Janey came down the hall toward the gold briefing room.
"I don't think we were supposed to report here" Janey said. "Are you sure?"
"Won't hurt to ask" Hush replied. "If I'm wrong, we head over to Bronze wing."
"Don't seem right to me" Janey said.
"I heard 'mission' and 'Gold Squadron' and something about a briefing" Hush said. "I wasn't expecting any messages or I would have paid closer attention."
They reached the door and both peeked in. "Is Bronze part of this briefing?" Hush asked before falling silent as heads turned and he saw who was in the room. Standing behind him, Janey couldn't help but smile...

"We still have a few centons before the briefing kicks off, I will be right back. I am going to check on the Major."
"Captain, she is looking for her coffee cup, down by the storage rooms."
"Thanks Lt. I will be back in a few microns, you two behave yourselves."
As Skyler left the room he heard Brik and Logan both exclaim in unison.... "What...?" Well, THAT had been an interesting few minutes and an unusual reaction from the Major. But, Brik reflected, there was no such thing as a truly "routine mission"...and absolutely no such thing as a "routine reaction" to a given mission by a particular Warrior. He knew that he'd had some highly moody moments before a mission or two over the yahrens and he held nothing against Brie, nor lost any respect for her. He may have actually gained some. Then there was Skyler and Logan, probably the closest thing that he had to FAMILY anymore. Frack, it was good to have Skyler out of MedLab and the time spent unwinding together over a serving of the now-traditional "Brik-buying-the-post-mission-milk-and-cookies" had been just the right thing at precisely the right time. Especially now that they were in the ready room again. So much had happened since the last time they had gathered here before the fateful...and costly...basestar mission. He still had no information on Ally. For that matter, would they ever see the survivors of the battered and proven Bronze Squadron? About that time... "Is Bronze part of this briefing?" Hush asked before falling silent as heads turned... Brik only had one thought: By the Sacred Lords of Kobol! He had no idea at all that he was smiling and becoming only slightly watery-eyed.

"Report."
"I have passed on our Master's orders," Den reported. "All ten are ready and waiting for further instructions."
"You have done well. Everything else is set in place. You have your instructions?"
"Yes," Den replied. "I know exactly what I need to do."
"Good. Dismissed."
"There's more," Den said quickly. "I know who some of the people are who have been assigned for the transfer."
There was a pause. "That could be useful. Continue."
"The Widow, of course," Den said eagerly. He was pleased with himself for being able to share extra information. "Also Captain Skyler, and Lieutenants Logan and Brik. There are two more, but I'm not sure who."
"How did you come across this information?"
Den grinned. "A plate of pastries can be a very useful thing."
"You have done well," the voice repeated. "Our Master will reward you."

The door opened and the light came on. Brie looked up and saw her SIC standing there. "Skyler, do me a favor and go back out, close the door, and count to 20. Then I'll be ready to talk." Without saying a word Skyler did as asked. "Oh, and please turn the light back off," Brie called after him.
When she was alone again she faced Turner. "I guess it's time for you to go."
"I'm not going anywhere, Brie. I'm going to help you see this through."
Even though his image disappeared, Brie knew that Turner was still with her. With his strength, she could do what was needed of her. "...nineteen...twenty," she said out loud. Her hand on her mug, Brie waited for the door to open again.

Skyler stood out side the door to Brie's hiding place counting to twenty. A thousand thoughts flew through his head, and many of them shed a little light on what had Brie so upset. He wouldn't mention it unless she brought it up, but could she be Justin's red headed mystery women. The thought stung...
He knew it would never work between them, not because he didn't want it to. He had even considered resigning his commission for it to work, but Brie would never let him do it. He wanted her happy, he would prefer to be the one to make her happy, but if he couldn't he wasn't going to stop her from having that happiness. It wasn't his place, or his right. Of course it could be something totally different. Logan’s remarks could of have just dug at a memory of Turner that was still fresh after all the craziness with that idiot Pierce and his flunkies. It didn’t matter what had caused her to lose her bearing, he was going to be supportive no matter the reason…. The sting returned, even if it was Justin….
"...nineteen...twenty," she said out loud. Her hand on her mug, Brie waited for the door to open again.
Skyler heard Brie through the door and his hand reached for the access panel.

"Is Bronze part of this briefing?" Hush asked before falling silent as heads turned and he saw who was in the room. Standing behind him, Janey couldn't help but smile...
Logan heard Hush's voice before she saw him and her heart started beating faster. The smile on her face at her conversation with Brik and Persephone seemed frozen and for some reason all she could think was how ridiculous it probably looked, her sitting there, smiling like an idiot, not able to move.
Brik kicked her under the table and she came to her senses. She also saw the person standing behind Hush, smiling broadly.
Forgetting all the rushed emotions of seeing Hush unexpectedly, Logan jumped out of her chair and rushed over to Janey, grabbing her by the arms and looking her over for scars or other signs of damage. "You're ok! You're...Oh Lords, it is good to see you!" She hugged her tightly and then stepped back in a hurry, still unsure the girl was there and relatively unscathed and not wanting to hurt her inadvertently.
Janey was still smiling, but she seemed a bit surprised at Logan's enthusiastic welcome. The relief in the Lt.'s eyes was genuine and her happiness at seeing Janey was clear.
Brik had come over to join them. He shook hands with Hush, who seemed unsure whether to say anything or not. Now that Brik greeted Janey, Logan stood there glancing at Hush and wanting to ask him a million questions. She still wasn't sure where things stood with them. With Gold and Bronze and with her and Hush, in particular. Not that there was ever anything to begin with, she told herself. Just because he is here doesn't mean he forgives you for being who you are, a member of Gold. She wasn't aware of it, but some of her facade had fallen and the sadness in her eyes was evident for anyone who cared to notice.
Brik was saying, "They wouldn't tell us anything. Logan has been harassing Lt. Baris for information on any of you. He started hidng from her. I think he thought she'd threaten violence next."
Janey laughed.
"Were you told to report here for the briefing?" Logan couldn't stop the question now that her shock at seeing Janey had subsided.

The door opened again. "Have a seat, my friend, but please, keep the light off. Sometimes I really like the dark." Skyler sat down on the floor next to her. "Don't let me forget my coffee mug. I told Persephone that's what I was doing, looking for my mug. I don't want her to know how crazy her new CO really is."
"You're not crazy, Brie," Skyler said softly.
"No?" Brie let out a small laugh. "You know what I've been doing in here? Having a conversation with my dead husband."
"You've done that before," Skyler reminded her. "And there's nothing wrong with working something out with someone who cares about you, even if they're not really there."
"I'm sorry for my overreaction before," Brie said sincerely. "It's this fracking mission. On paper it looks so easy, way above the ability of anyone involved, but Commander Sheba seems to think that I should be the one to do it. And I guess she's right." She explained the basic details of the assignment to Skyler, and why it had been assigned to her.
"I know she didn't mean anything by it, but Logan joked about JustinB sitting back on the Callisto, pondering Logan's fate. It just brought me back to that time, the exact moment, when I learned that Turner was missing. Every time I think that I'm finally over it..." The tears started to fall again.
Skyler took his hand and placed it on top of Brie's. "You know what would make me really happy?" Brie started slowly. Skyler shook his head. "For you to find someone. Someone who isn't a warrior, someone that you could really love, someone who is worthy of your affections. Because I know how you feel about me, and believe me, I'm not worthy. I need you to move on."

"Were you told to report here for the briefing?" Logan had asked.
Janey smiled and whacked Hush on the shoulder. "Dummy here didn't get the whole message. Gold's briefing room was closer, so if we're wrong we'll git on out of yer way."
Hush said nothing, but stared at Logan until she looked his way again. The depth of emotion he read in her eyes stunned him. No matter what else he felt about her, Logan was easily the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen, and even though they'd been through hell and back he still felt his cheeks begin to blush as he got her attention. The fact that he'd treated her so horribly since the mission hit him like a ton of bricks. He didn't have the words, and couldn't begin to say them in front of the others if he did, but the corners of his mouth suddenly turned up ever so slightly, his head nodded once just as slightly, and he winked at her, all which made him blush even more.
Janey sighed. "Gosh, it's so good to see y'all! You're a sight for sore eyes. I haven't see either of you since..." She thought about it for a moment, remembering the whole team together in the core. They were on their way out when it all went blank for her. A sudden memory of that cylon standing over her, it's foot on her chest, flooded her mind. She shook it off, recalling vaguely being rescued in a cylon ship sometime later, but like always when she tried, she couldn't quite nail down the memory. She sighed again. "Lords, it feels like forever!"

Janey was right. It did feel like forever.
Forever since they had all faced each other in this very room, getting a briefing on an entirely different mission. A mission that had changed them all and their preconceived ideas about each other. They had come together for a common goal, reluctanctly and lost friends along the way.
Logan looked at Hush again and his eyes were on her, his face flushed scarlet as he smiled hesitantly, nodded and winked at her from beneath the lock of blonde hair that hung over his forehead. She couldn't help but return his smile and her heart leapt into her throat. She had so many things she wanted to tell him, but knew this wasn't the time or place.
She reached up and nervously started playing with a strand of her hair, twisting it between her fingers. Brik glanced at her and noticed she was biting her lip like she always did when deep in thought. For all her claims to the contrary, when she was very anxious about something there were telltale signs that her friends had learned to recognize over the yahrens.
Brik said,"I wish you were involved in this mission with us. From what we understand its very routine and I, for one, would love the honor of working with you both again. I'm sure Logan feels the same."
"Absolutely," Logan replied instantly, never taking her eyes off of Hush. Logan put every effort she could muster into letting Hush know with her eyes she was sorry for the way things had turned out. That she would give anything to go back and save Ally and Weasel. To be the one left in the Computer Core instead of him and Janey. That she felt this connection with him that she couldn't explain but wanted to understand and wished they could explore it. All these things went through her mind as she locked her gaze onto his and she silently hoped that he understood at least some of this.
She was vaguely aware of Janey making a joke about 'searching for solium leaks' but for a micron, as she and Hush looked at each other, it felt like they were the only people in the room.

Skyler sat there, the stinging sensation returned, even more intense than before. It felt more like his insides were on fire. She needed him to move on…. So she could be happy….
“Brie, you have it wrong, I am the one not worthy. I have already found someone I could really love. Two some one’s to be honest. The first was taken from me and the hurt almost ended my career. The second is one I sadly cannot have. Due to fate she is someone I am forever blessed to be around, and my dearest friend, but one I am cursed to never have, no matter how hard I try or wish it to be. I have resigned myself to that fate. I hope you can accept that as moving on, because I do not want to stand between you and your happiness.”
The words had barely escaped Skyler’s mouth when he felt the burning sensation leave and a great emptiness take its place. Brie deserved to be happy; she has been through so much. More than anyone really knew or understood. He wouldn’t stand in her way; he didn’t have the right to…..
