Ranny wasn't sure if it would be good news or if had overstepped his boundaries. His Master could be harsh and unforgiving, or merciful and loving. Ranny hoped that it would be the latter. He entered his quarters and closed the door quickly behind him. "Master," he started, his voice shaking, "I've been informed that they won't be sending people back to the Starliner Alpha from the Callisto for several more cycles. But I was able to secure you transportation to the Rising Star, and a shuttle a centar later to the Alpha. That way your plan won't be jeopardized." Ranny gulped. "If that is your will, of course."
Slowly and dramatically Pierce reached a hand towards Ranny. He patted him on the back and smiled. "Of course. You have done well, Ranny. When you're least expecting it, you and Aola will be rewarded." Pierce didn't have any intention or the means to purposely reward Ranny or his wife, but they didn't know that. They would give him credit for the next good thing that happened to them, and his status as a god would grow. "When does the shuttle leave?"
"Thirty centons, Master," Ranny replied.
"You're more than welcome to stay with us if you'd prefer," Aola added quickly.
Pierce ran his hand through Aola's hair. "You've both been more than generous, but I think it's best if I return home. There are still preparations to be made." He looked at Ranny, who still seemed nervous. His voice grew stern. "What are you keeping from me?"
"Nothing, Master," Ranny replied quickly. "I've just been trying to find the words. Your servant Chip...well...word is that he's already dead. He died on the shuttle. I don't know the details, but I know that your plan was..."
"My plan," Pierce interrupted, "was for Chip to not survive his first light cycle on the Prison Barge. He obviously won't. Make sure it's known that Chip was punished for his disobedience and stupidity."
"Yes, Master," Ranny replied.
"How about that other matter?" Pierce wanted to know.
"It's all taken care of, Master," Ranny promised.
"Good. I'm holding you personally responsible for that one." Pierce picked up the one small bag he had brought from the Starliner Alpha. "I guess I'm off, and back to masquerading as 'Holt' again. Thank you both for your hospitality." He kissed Aola one final time. "Remember, you will be rewarded."
