Skyler arrived at the entrance to the bridge microns before Brik.
"Old friend, looks like you will be acting SIC again, atleast while we are in the air."
"Skyler, you know I don't feel qualified for that honor."
"I know all to well, thats how I feel most of the time." Skyler grinned as Brik turned to head to the launch bay and Skyler entered the Bridge.

"Squadron commanders, please meet with Cmdr. Sheba in the war room," came the announcement from Lt. Finky.
Sheba was already seated at her position in the war room. I entered the room upon notification and was at her side as well.
Capt. Skyler entered first, followed my Major Jorlan of Bronze squadron. We were still waiting for a representative from Black squadron...

After reporting to Skyler and returning to the bays of the Callisto...
Walking over to one of the engineers that he truly trusted (having known the man since they were stationed together on a deep space assignment a few yahrens ago), Brik went to talk to the man quietly...
"Hey Miles...look, someone was poking around the vipers just before the alert. We didn't see them well enough to place them and we think we scared them away before much could be tampered with. But just the same I need a huge favor...I need you...
"You need me to grab some trusted individuals to make a sweep of as many of the vipers as possible before the order to launch."
Brik's face went slightly droopy as he looked at his old comrade.
Smiling knowingly the man spoke "Don't worry, I'm not a telepath, Ike and Wraith mentioned it to me and I've had some hand-picked men on it for the last fifteen minutes...we should have all of the ships cleared as well as we can for the moment and we should finish just before you folks leave on your 'picnic' . That good enough?"
"Yes, yes it is...next one's on me, old man!"
His friend waved him off in the way that friends do when you're keeping them from a task.
To himself, "Frack! I need to go to my locker...almost botched the whole damn thing!"
And with that, the Lt achieved his latest mission of rembering to place cigars in his jacket for later...for victory.

Capt. Randrius, Black squadron's acting CO, entered the war room and sat down at Sheba's gesture. She began to speak, "We have received a private communique from Cmdr. Apollo that the Cylon basestar that has been in the area has been found. Take a look on the map." She pushed a button on the console and up popped a detailed map of the area. Behind a small planet, there was the base star.
"It is Apollo's thinking that if we can draw out her fighters, the other squadrons, working in tandem, can make a strike and destroy the defensive batteries leaving the base star vulnerable to attack by the battlestars. It's a risky initiative, but one where we have the advantage. Apollo intends for the Galactica and the Callisto to manouver on each side of the base star and draw out her fighters. That's where we come in. It's our job. Capt. Skyler will be the Strike Wing commander of the Callisto's fighters. He will lead Gold and Bronze squadron in to take on the Cylon fighters. While he keeps them busy, the Galactica will sneak in behind with her own fighters to attack. If necessary, we can have Black squadron on alert and ready to assist. Any questions?"

Skyler studied the map for a few microns before it really sunk in Strike Commander.....
"Commander, do we have anything covering the Fleet? With all our forces engaging the basestar, an unnoticed Cylon Patrol of just a few raiders could be fatal to us."

"Black squadron will remain behind and guard the rear half of the fleet, as usual. Apollo has one of his squadrons in place to do the same at the fore of the fleet. Anything else?"

At that moment, Lt. Aegina came in the door. "Commander Sheba, Commander Apollo is on alpha channel and requests to speak with you immedately."
"I'll be right there. Hold everything. Colonel, with me," she said.
I followed her out to the command chair. Apollo's image was already on the vid screen. "Apollo," Sheba said.
"Sheba. The time is now. Galactica's squadron's will launch once we reach our position. Have your squadrons launch in ten centons to give them time to reach the planet and then get the Callisto in position. When we arrive, I'll notify you. Then it's game on. You ready?"
Sheba nodded, "Ready, Apollo. Good luck," she said with a bit more emotion than normal.
"You too," he replied. "May the Lords of Kobol be with us." With that, his image flickered and the screen went dead.
Sheba turned to me, "Colonel. Get the squadrons to their ships. Gold and Bronze launch first since they have to get underway. Then Black will follow up and take positions around the rear edge of the fleet. First launches in ten centons. Good luck."
"Aye, Commander. Lt. Aegina. Make the announcement. All pilots to their ships. We launch in ten centons!"
The klaxons blared and the ships lights quickly turned blood red. "All pilot's report to launch bay. All pilots report to launch bay."
The battle was almost here...

The battle was almost here...
"All right folks, time to earn your cubits!"
Brik ran along with his comrades to their ships, not far since everyone was waiting near the bays for the official call to battle.
Frack, he thought to himself, I'm Skyler's SIC...I hope that I don't make some huge mistake. He found himself on the verge of dwelling on the various incidents surrounding Brie and Amy and the effects on the squadron...and wisely decided to let that wait for later, for AFTER the fight. He knew that more than anything he had a duty to be confident for the warriors under his command, no matter how temporary that command might be. Just remember that he was a Colonial Warrior, one of the sworn protectors of humanity and all would be well.
If only it didn't take so fracking long to receive launch clearance!

Lucian watched the scanner as Stadia moved forward to scout out the Cylons. Within moments, as he'd feared, the lead pair of Cylons peeled off toward her. At the speed at which they were closing, it wouldn't take long for them to meet. Knowing her skill level, Lucian felt that Stadia could most likely deal with the two Raiders, but if the other two followed.
"Lucian, there go the other two," stated Fallel from the other seat. "It's going to be four on one in a moment. That's not good."
"Not good at all," Lucian replied. "Start revving up that box while I shoot a message to Dolet." He turned back to the controls and activated the short range comm. He started the recorder and said, "R1 to R3, go in hot for the second one just in case R2 misses. Then, you'll both swing for three and four." A micron later, he sent the message as a microburst to minimize the chance of detection.
Moments later, Fallel's eyes widened as he felt the shuttle accelerating. "Lucian, the scanner says we're moving up on them instead of hanging back like you said."
"Yeah, sorry, I changed my mind. I figured I got them into this, so I can't let the Stadia and Dolet have all of the fun."

The klaxons sounded, Skyler and the other Squadron Leaders excused themselves from the bridge and made their way to the launch bays. Skyler arrived and found that Lt. Brik had Gold Squadron ready to launch. So much for that big pre-mission pep talk.... Less than ten centons till launch. He ran to his viper, only to find Major Brie's in his spot. Looking back across the bay at his damaged Viper in the repair bay, he felt a twinge, like one feels for a sick and dying friend that you have known all your life.
"Hey Flyboy, didn't have time to get her fixed for you, but we are working on it."
Skyler turned and saw the Gold Squadron Crew Chief, Micklin, chewing on a old fumarello smiling at him. His gruff exterior giving way to show he really cared. He might give them all hades for the way they flew 'his machines' but in the end, he cared about each and everyone of these 'flyboys'.
"Thanks Micklin, I will bring this one back in better shape I promise" Skyler told him, taking his helm from the Chief.
"You had better not put a strach on it, or don't bother coming back. Might as well fly for the Cylons, that would cripple their fleet in no time. The way you flyboys tear up ships, like there is an never ending supply or something. You think they have a million of these things just sitting around waiting for you to trash the one you have, then you want to climb my back when it won't fly......" Skyler climbed into his Viper, pulling on his helm as Micklin's complaining faded as he made his way across the bay.
Keying the intercom..... "Gold and Bronze Squadrons.... As you know, we are about to launch and mix it up with a few raiders. Nothing we can not handle. I will be the Stike Captain for this flight. Lt. Brik will Command Alpha Flight, Lt. Najin, Beta Flight. Major Jolan, you have already set up your flights. Ok people, lets kick this swine....."
Skyler turned off his comm unit, looked to his left and received the thumbs up form Lt. Brik.... looking to his right, he saw the empty space Brie's Viper would have been, if she had flight status. The twinge returned, but faded as he thought of her, probably visiting Amy at this very micron. Safe and out of harms way. He reached up to his chest to rub his 'good luck' charm. His bronze cluster, but it wasn't there. He knew he had given it to Brie, it was just habit, reaching for it. "May the Lords of Kobol be with us all..."
