Lt. Finky turned to Cmdr. Sheba, "Commander, no reports on Major Lucian's rescue mission. If the Callisto leaves the area, what will happen to them if they return? They won't know where we are?"
Sheba thought for a micron. "Notify Black squadron members who are on patrol that if the shuttle and the vipers return, to let them find the nearest ship capable of handling them. They can wait it out there. I believe that the Rising Star is close by and has enough room in her landing bays."
"Yes, ma'am." Finky made the communication to Black squadron.
Sheba turned to Geenie at the flight console. She nodded toward her.
Geenie keyed her headset on, "All coordinates downloaded to viper craft. Transferring control. Launch when ready!"

Astraea hovered near one of the scanning stations and listened intently for any variation in signal. She had heard so many Cylon communications over the yahrens that she could pick out the subtle codes even in the static chaos. Deciphering them was another matter, but just discerning the codes could alert the fleet to impending attack.
She felt a tightening in her stomach when Charybdis and Commander Sheba disappeared into the war room. She knew what was coming. She had seen the scenario played out many times even before she had become a warrior. Chance had her on the bridge of the Galactica a number of times when she needed to double check her historical facts. She had been so impressed with the professionalism of the staff that she yearned to be a part of it. That had led her to warrior training once Charybdis had convinced her that she really could make a difference.
The klaxons blared and the ships lights quickly turned blood red. "All pilot's report to launch bay. All pilots report to launch bay."
Astraea felt the knot in her stomach tighten. They were on the verge of battle and she was grounded.

Wraith adjusted his helmet, picking up Skyler's final instructions before launch. While he listened, his attention was focused primarily on the guages and digital readouts lighting up the cockpit.
"I'd give my 'Pyramid' winnings to find out who the hell that Felgercarb was screwing with my Viper..." Wraith thought apprehensively to himself, for shrouded in this mystery, a plethera of other questions existed, all of which spelled trouble.
"Worry about it later--you've got a job to do." Wraith told himself, continuing to bring the Vipers internal systems online. He could hear the deep, throaty roar of the reactor, the surge of the turbines coming to life; heard their familiar whine gradually increase in pitch. Indicators all showed nominal...everything seemed ok. He had faith in the unmatched abilities of Micklin, their crew-chief, to bring his fighter back to 100%. He and his Viper were ready.
The canopy locked and sealed, causing the cockpit to automatically pressurize. Wraith could feel the adrenalin; knew they were centons from launch. As he scanned the bay, he could see the faces of his comrades, of his good friends, Brik and Ike, and lastly of the man who would spearhead this mission: Captain Skyler. All had the triumphant look of victory in their faces, in their eyes. Confidence and exhileration surged through the seasoned warrior's veins. They were all ready.
"Lets go kick some."

Sheba came out of the war room. I had stayed on the bridge monitoring the progress of the flight crews.
"Status, Colonel?" she asked.
"Command has been given, Commander. The vipers are launching as we speak."
She looked out of the main view screen into space, at the other ships of the fleet that were in front of the Callisto. To no one in particular, she quietly said, "May the Lords be with us."
Just as quickly, she barked at Lt. Aegina, "Lt., lock in coordinates and prepare to move the Callisto. As soon as all fighters have launched, we go!"

"Launch when ready."
FINALLY! As many times as he heard that phrase it always made his heart race and his blood flow. He always thought: "It feels like the first time!"
"What?" asked his friend Wraith over the com system. Ooops, gotta remember the inside voice... "Uh, nothing just wishing us well!" To cover up his audio slip he looked over and patted the fumerellos in his jacket, which the other pilot understood all too well and the two men...then the entire squad...became all smiles and thumbs up at the thought of what eventually will be (if the Lords were with them) a hard-won but oh-so-satisfying victory!
Then; "Capt. Skyler, you have the honors!"
And as soon as the viper shot down the tube: "Alright! Alpha Flight, launch by the numbers!" and at that he engaged the launch system and accelerated down the never-boring launch tube to see Skyler's wake and imagining the awesome sight of viper after viper sleeking it's way from the imposing bulk of the Callisto. By the Lords of Kobol, he loved his job!

As Lucian watched the monitors on the shuttlecraft, first Stadia’s and then Dolet’s IFF indicators suddenly winked onto the screen. On cue, Fallel hit several switches in sequence, putting the jury-rigged directional jammer to work to reduce the risk of the Cylons calling for help. Both men hoped there weren’t any Cylon ships beyond in the jamming cone; if so, they’d be able to follow its signal right back to the shuttlecraft.
Still being too far away to see, but closing on the fight to keep the jamming cone as small as possible, Lucian observed as Captain Stadia dove at the Raiders. Seeing them split, he imagined she had gone into a spin and started firing at them. A moment later, the second of the first two Raiders winked out, but Lucian grew concerned as the other two came in on Stadia. He saw Ensign Dolet’s Viper closing on Raiders on the screen, but he could not tell if the ensign was close enough to help. Stadia’s little blip suddenly veered off at an angle to avoid the other Raiders, and then they too split as Dolet finally closed. They avoided the fire Lucian imagined was coming from Dolet’s Viper, but their formation was disrupted to the point that, a micron later, another blip disappeared as Stadia’s Viper blip sliced back in to the group. With two of four down and the odds now evened at two to two, things seemed to be going well in the fight. Then Lucian saw that the first Raider had come around and now seemed to be in position to be firing on Dolet’s rear….

"Frack" Dolet muttered as the trailing cylon fired, his viper rocked by the resulting explosion. "That was too close..." He'd seen the raider drop down, knew what it was up too, yet was too slow in his reaction to prevent the cylon from coming up on his tail.
"Breaking flaps... breaking flaps" his whispered as he tried the move, hoping to drop down as well and allow the raider to blow by him. But the raider slowed as well, and it's next shot felt like it scored a hit. Dolet's viper shook as if it was going to come apart, but all the readouts stayed green. Dolet hit his turbos and tried evasive tactics.
He wanted to hit his com, call for help... He poured on the turbos, opening up the space between himself and the chasing cylon.

On the scanner, it appeared that the Raider had slipped in behind Ensign Dolet. Captain Stadia and the other Raider were quite some distance away, and Dolet’s course was only increasing the distance between them. “Lucian, it does not look good for young Dolet,” said Fallel. He looked at the jury-rigged control panel to his left. “The device is hot; think now might be a good time to try it?”
“I was hoping to avoid it as long as possible, but I guess there’s no time like the present,” said Lucian as the shuttlecraft closed on the other ships. As they neared, Fallel widened the jamming field to prevent the remaining Cylons from sending out any messages, and Lucian brought the shuttle around in line but far behind the Raider. He quickly recorded another message to Dolet, then sent it as a microburst….

Dolet's com suddenly crackled to life... It was the shuttle, and Dolet listened as he pushed his turbos to the limit.
"R1 to R3: In a few moments, the jamming will end abruptly. You'll receive a message on short range ship-to-ship. It will be either "RIGHT" or "LEFT." Immediately break 60 degrees RIGHT if I say right, or 60 degrees LEFT if I say left. Stay steady on that course for a count of 4 but no more since he'll be retargeting you at about that point if what I'm doing doesn't work, then try to lose him and reclose with Stadia. Be ready and may the Lords be with you! R3 out."
"Okay...okay..." Dolet said to himself as the com went silent. His attack computer showed the cylon had fallen behind but was beginning to close in again. "Whatever you guys have in mind..."
The message suddenly burst through his com: "RIGHT!"
Dolet reacted a moment later, setting his viper on a vector to the right, a nice tight turn, exactly 60 degrees. He began to count in a shaky voice, "One... two... three..."

Stadia turned right trying to lose the raider on her tail. A shot barely missing her wing buzzed by. She immediatelymoved her viper into an upward spiral trying not to shake her ship into piece but come up behind the raiders.
