As all had been before since Major JustinB's departure several cycles before, Lucian's latest rest period was short and not very restful. With Cylon's in the area, he was trying to spend as much time on duty as possible, but no one can stay awake forever. Unless, that is, one is trying to sleep. Then, as Lucian did, one sometimes questions whether sleep will ever come. Having gotten at least a little rest, Lucian struggled off the bed, quickly dressed, and headed back to the Bridge. On arrival, he checked the current status. It was much as it had been a couple of centars before....
"Nothing yet, Sir," replied Lieutenant Finky. "We haven't heard from him, and have seen nothing on any of the scanners. The good news, if you can call it that, is that those fracking Cylons haven't turned up again recently either. They were here, they were gone, they were here, they were gone!" She clenched her fists and said, "Fracking idiots can't make up their minds if you ask me. If they'd get a little closer,we'd at least have a chance to blast 'em."
Lucian struggled not to laugh at Finky's little outburst. She definitely had a way of expressing herself. He then checked ship's status, finding everything in order. A few minor repairs were still underway, so he gave orders for completing the work, and then turned to a workstation. He quickly accessed Justin's original trajectory, calculated fuel usage, and then used the new Viper's stat's to estimate his estimated expendables reserves. The computer flashed, "RESERVES EXPENDED."
Lucian's pulse raced as he looked at the flashing message. Quickly, he changed some variables, and received the reply, "FUEL RESERVES EXPENDED, AIR SUPPLY 3%, CONSUMABLES 20%." A few more changes, but he couldn't get the fuel reserves up until he assumed a significant amount of unpowered "coasting," effectively gliding through space under his own inertia. Figuring that JustinB would not have taken his fuel reserves below about 20 to 25 percent, Lucian calculated the approximate area where JustinB's ship might be found. The only astral body in the area that might have hidden his ship was a comet currently moving away from the system's star. Saving the file, he went to see Commander Sheba.

I checked back into my temporary quarters and unpacked my bag. I had not even been on rest duty since coming aboard after the flight back from the Galactica.
There were several messages on my comm unit. Nothing but routine reports and an update on the new personnel coming onboard. It listed Ensign Annie and a new officer, Ensign Haidee.
At least they were still coming, I thought. This war has gone on long enough...

“He’s a valuable member of this crew, but he knew the risks when he volunteered for the mission,” replied the Commander. “He would not want us to risk the safety of the Fleet or even this ship just to save him.”
Not willing to abandon his friend, Lucian pressed the issue. “Commander, the circumstances have changed since JustinB left. Colonel Charybdis and the new ensign had a run-in with the Cylons. One of the Galactica’s patrols ran into several tin-heads, too. They know we’re here and they’ve been shadowing us for at least three or four cycles, and probably an entire secton. According to the latest scanning contact from the Galactica, which was sometime yesterday, the Cylons have shifted more toward the front of the Fleet.” Without waiting for permission, he activated the program on the nearby monitor, and illustrated his plan.
He was surprised when Sheba didn’t order him to end it immediately. Then, when it was done, he was even more surprised when Sheba asked, “Who’ll fly the shuttle? The Warriors in the Vipers shouldn’t have a problem, but the person in the shuttle won’t have a chance if they run into Cylons. It will have to be a volunteer, because I won’t allow anyone to be ordered on such a mission.”
“Not a problem, Commander,” replied Lucian. “I’ll be in the shuttle.”

A few centons later, Lucian sent out a call to the Callisto’s Warriors:
“Wanted. Two volunteers for special mission. See Major Lucian immediately.”

Lucian quickly contacted Phrynix, Black Squadron's perennially self-persecuted Chief Mission Specialist. Despite having been on the job and done well for yahrens, he still felt he was, and possibly was, unfairly compared to Fenmarnis, Gold Squadron's wonder woman CMS. Possibly as a result of his perceived inferiority, Phrynix always seemed to try harder than Fenny in order to equal her efforts. He usually did, though he griped a lot more in the process.
Lucian asked Phrynix, "Chief, the mission's approved. How are those mods coming along?"
"Lords, Lucian! We just started a little while ago!" groused Phrynix. "It's going to take a good while to finish."
"Chief, we don't have a good while. We're not sure how much time JustinB has at all, but I'll damned if I let him suffocate because we twiddled our thumbs tweaking that shuttle. Top three items are priority. Get them done," ordered Lucian. "I'll be there in 20 centons, and plan to launch then."
"You've got to give us more time," pleaded Phrynix. "We can't get that much done by then."
"You've got more time," said Lucian with a chuckle, "til I get there anyway."

Lucian made a quick stop by his quarters. Another flashing message light that would have to wait. He hoped it was another message from Mar-nee'. It had been several cycles since he'd had a chance to speak with her, but they were now routinely swapping messages like love-sick school kids. Actually, "love-sick" was a bad word in Lucian's mind. Knowing that he was desperately in love with her, he was still trying to take it very slow to allow her to recover from her grief over Kaytoe's death. He hoped that someday, hopefully before too long, she'd come to the realization that she loved him, too. Still, for now, duty called, and Mar-nee' and visions of happiness with her would have to wait. He quickly changed into his brown Warrior's flight uniform, grabbed his laser pistol and power packs, then headed toward Beta Bay.
As he sped down the corridors, he went over the "to-do" list in his mind. He hoped Phrynix had pulled off a miracle and finished everything on the list. If not, the mission would be in even more jeopardy than he'd told Commander Sheba. A few moments later as he entered the launch area, he saw a swarm of Techs around the shuttle and two Warriors nearby....

Stadia brushed hard at her teeth trying to rid her breath of ambrosia when whe heard the call for volunteers. She spit out the paste and rinsed her mouth out and slipped into her shirt.
She slid out the door on her way to find lucian to volunteer for the mission.

"Stadia!" exclaimed Lucian, shaking her hand. She looked better than she had the last time he'd seen her some sectars before. He'd heard that she'd been through some tough times since she'd been sealed a couple of yahrens before, so he was glad to see her in better health. "Glad to have you volunteer for this mission, though I warn you now, it will most likely be very dangerous. Think about that while you check out your Viper to make sure you're ready for an extended mission. If you're still willing after that, we'll have a mission briefing in five centons, and will be launching right after that."

Once her heart rate returned to normal she listened to his comments. "Yes sir!" She turned and began checking the belly of her viper. She smiled as it had been a long time since she flew. She laughed as she thought to herself, I bet he gave an extra going over. She stood and ran her hand over the wing of her viper looking for any flaws. She walked around behind her viper, making sure to check everything in great detail. She turned in time to see Jacob walk by. She went back to checking her viper.

"Ensign Dolet, thank you for volunteering," said Lucian to the young Warrior standing rather rigidly at attention. "You did a great job towing in the mystery pilot a little while back, so glad to have you on board for this one." Lucian supressed a smile as Dolet's face lit up at the compliment. "Of course, this one may be even more dangerous, so check out your Viper with the Tech assigned to it to make sure it's ready for anything. We'll go over the mission in a few centons and will be launching shortly."
