The doctor had left the room to contact Charybdis, and he returned a micron later.
"Is he coming?" Amy asked in a shakey voice.
"Yes" the doctor replied. "And if you'll excuse me, I'll begin prepping for the operation." He left, leaving one of the nurses behind.
Amy looked nearly overcome with grief. "Mom, I'm scared."
"Don't be" Abby and Brie said in unison, both leaning forward at the same time. Brie quickly leaned back a little, still holding Amy's hand.
"I don't want to die" Amy sobbed.
"Don't talk crazy. You'll be fine" Abby continued soothingly, "you are in good hands."
Amy shook her head. "It's not fine. Mom, I'm so afraid." She was starting to cry uncontrollably. "Before Charybdis gets here, before it's too late, I have to tell you. I'm so so sorry if I hurt you with my reaction about dad's death..."
"We'll have plenty of time later to talk" Abby said softly. "Save your strength." She stroked the side of Amy's head.
"No" Amy said, letting go of Brie's hand and hugging Abby hard. "I love you so much. I'm sorry if I've hurt you. I never meant to hurt you and dad."
"It's okay" Abby insisted. She was crying now too. "I know you love me. I love you too sweetheart."
"Oh mom..." After a micron Amy pulled back and looked at Brie. "Brie... oh Brie..." She pulled her close and hugged her too. "Thank you so much for everything. I'd have been so fracked without you." She managed a laugh through the tears. "You're like a second mom to me. And I mean that in a good way..."

Brie ignored the tears that had started to flow. “Amy, you’re...you’re like the little sister that I never had. It’s always hard for me to let someone get close to me, but with you I’m so glad that I have. But don’t worry, honey. You’re going to be fine. Your mother is a strong woman, and you’ve inherited her strength.”

I arrived the Med Lab almost in a full sprint. "I was called to the Lab. What is it?" I asked of the on-duty technician.
"Yes, Colonel, right this way." She got up and led me back to Amy's room. So it was with Amy after all. "Captain Amy is in," was all she said as she left to go back to her duty station.
I looked at the door, the cold gray steel. I swallowed hard. Why was I feeling nervous? Why was I afraid? The doctor probably found out about the baby and it was good news! Why, he will probably tell us that we are having a bouncing baby boy! Just what I have always wanted!
I smiled a bit, took a deep breath and went in to see my bride to be...

The door opened and Charybdis stepped into the room. For some reason Brie was surprised to see him. "Colonel," she said automatically.
"Brie," Charybdis started, looking surprised that she was there as well, "you've been called to the bridge."
"Not allowed," Brie said. "I'm still on light duty." She wiped away some tears and reached again for the walker before looking at Abby. "I think maybe Amy needs a couple of microns alone with her fiancé."

Abby looked sharply at Brie, then at Amy. Fiancé? When she looked back at Brie, Brie gave her a look that said now wasn't the time. Abby said nothing, seeming to agree, but her expression showed her displeasure at not knowing about Amy's apparent engagement, or the fact that Brie knew about it before she did.
"You won't go far, will you?" Amy asked, a tinge of panic in her voice. She hadn't realized that her mom didn't know about the engagement, and even now was too upset for the thought to register.
"Of course not" Abby replied, managing a smile. She turned to the nurse, whispered something, and the nurse nodded.
"I'll tell the doctor you are ready" the nurse said. "In a few microns" she added, picking up her equipment. She understood, and was going to give them some time before she informed the doctor. She left, followed by Abby and Brie.
"We'll be right down the hall sweetheart" Abby said, reassuringly as she left the room.
And Amy was alone in the room with Charybdis.
She wiped at her face, then held her arms out, inviting Charybdis for a hug. She wanted to feel him in her arms, and knew she wouldn't want to let go. If she didn't, she wouldn't have to tell him anything or face the danger that lie ahead...

I hugged her for dear life. SHe was trembling and that did it. I knew that this was no ordinary announcement. Frack, what was going on?
I hugged her closer...

I looked into her face. "Amy, what's wrong? I've never seen you shake this way. What happened? Is it the doctor? Did he have the results?" I was truly worried what Amy was going to say in response...

Amy wanted to just hold Charybdis, and go on just holding him, but he had to be told what was going on.
"I don't know how to tell you" Amy began. She took her time, trying to breathe normally when her body just wanted to shake with grief. It took effort to keep her voice steady. "The baby... OUR baby" she stressed, letting him know that he was indeed the father, "the cylons did something to it. It's not growing normally."
She decided to just come out and say it. "It's attaching arteries to me and feeding on me. And it has to be aborted or delivering it will kill me."
Charybdis was about to say something, but Amy held up a hand.
"Let me finish" she asked, though her voice had begun to waver. "The doctors say the risk will increase the longer we wait, but even so the abortion itself... well... there's a chance I might not..." Her face began to show the grief as she buried her head on his shoulder. "I don't want to die Charybdis!" she sobbed. "We had a future, a baby. We're finally together and now..."

"I don't want to die Charybdis!" she sobbed. "We had a future, a baby. We're finally together and now..."
She cried into my chest...I didn't know what to say. I had hoped that it was going to be OK, but this?
"Amy...I..." No words could come out. "By the Lords!" I finally got out, but it was woefully inadequate.
I gathered myself again, "so, the baby is ours?" I asker her. She nodded.
A baby. My baby. Our baby. Amy was pregnant with my child! But what should have been the most wonderful news just turned into one of the worst nightmares anyone could ask for.
I steeled my resolve. "The doctors...they can come up with something. Perhaps to save both of you? Amy, listen to me. We have to try. I know this is strange, but that's our baby you're carrying. We can't just kill it! We have to try to save you both!" I was grasping. I needed to talk to the doctors.
"I'm going to talk to the doctors...."

"It's no use" Amy said sadly. "The changes the cylons made are genetic. It's killing me now, as we speak. It's feeding on me. It's why I actually look thinner right now. And if I manage to carry it to term, the doctors say it won't be born in the usual way. Bearing it will kill me." Her voice began to shake again. "Aborting it might kill me too. But the longer we wait, the more danger I'm in. I just wish... I wish it were different, but..."
She pulled him close again.
