Amy closed her eyes, trying to fight off the waves of emotion that threatened to overwhelm her. She opened her eyes and looked at Brie, into eyes the same as hers. "I know..." she began, then stopped, taking another moment to collect herself.
But it didn't work.
"Could you just hold me?" Amy suddenly blurted out. "Just once?" It wasn't what she was going to ask, but the idea suddenly overtook her, and if it didn't happen now, it never would.
Amy sat there, pitiful and looking somehow younger than her years, like a lost child. She looked pathetic and scared, alone and in need.....

"Oh Lords, Amy, of course!" Brie threw her arms around Amy and the tears started to flow. "Amy, I'm so sorry, for everything. I know that I should have said something to you yahrens ago, but I had convinced myself..." Brie was crying so hard that it was difficult to talk. "Amy, what I said before, I didn't mean it. More than anything in this universe, I wish that I could be a real mother to you. I love you, Amy, I always have."

Amy held on tight, buried her head on Brie's shoulder, and cried until there was nothing left. She just held on, as if she would never let go. But she knew she had to. As safe as it felt to her, it wasn't real. It never was, and never could be.
But just for a moment, she let herself believe that it was. Mother and daughter, for one brief moment. "I wish you could too..." she said, "Mom..." She hugged tighter, if it was even possible.

Amy's calling Brie "Mom" started a fresh round of tears for Brie. It was something that she had never expected, never even dared let herself hope to hear.
"Oh my baby girl," Brie said softly, gently stroking Amy's hair. "There's no going back now. I'm here, and I'm never going to deny you again. I don't care if the whole fleet knows..." Brie stopped for a micron, thoughts of Pierce and his followers crossing her mind. If he had tried to kill Brie because of Turner, his surviving supporters would think nothing of going after her daughter. "We just need to be careful, make sure the wrong people don't find out."

Amy's breath caught in surprise. It was a moment before she could think of what to say. After all the harsh words and refusal, Brie was suddenly saying what Amy had ached to hear.
Her mouth opened, but she still didn't know what to say. Finally she asked, "Are you serious? Really?" A smile began to spread on her face, though the sadness remained, as if she were unwilling to believe this was true. But a glimmer of hope had cut through her defenses and she was vulnerable now, and to be hurt again at this moment might be too much to bear....

"Tell me what you want me to do," Brie said. She was happier than she had been since she had taken the seal with Turner. "We'll work everything out together. You, me, your mo......Abby." Brie quickly changed the subject, the last person that she wanted to talk about was Abby. "When you're out of here, at least while you're still recovering, I want you to stay with me again. Your private quarters have been approved, but I think you and I could use a little bit of time, try to figure out where we go from here." She paused, not wanting to ever let go of her daughter, but she didn't want to push. "If you want to, that is."

"Of course I want to" Amy said, allowing the hope she felt to blossom into happiness. Then a thought struck her. "As long as you really want to." She pulled away enough to see Brie's face. "I've learned I'm pretty good at pressuring people into things. Look me in the eye and tell me that you want to do this, for yourself and not just cause I want to."
She braced herself for the answer. It was a question she should have also asked Charybdis not that long ago...

Brie looked deep into Amy's eyes. They were different than she had remembered them, a slight cloudiness that she had never seen before. She assumed it was from the crying. "I want to do this for us," she said sincerely. "For as long as you want." Brie took Amy's hands again, they were considerably warmer than they had been just centons earlier. "I know that you've been thinking that your whole life has been a lie, but our friendship has been real, very real. We've been friends for yahrens, it would be nice to try being mother and daughter as well, and I can't think of a better way to start." A grin crossed Brie's face. "Besides, my laundry is really stacking up."

Amy broke out in laughter. Laundry had been a running joke between them for a long time. She hugged Brie again, then sat back a little. "I think the best place to start is with m-- Abby. If we can work it out and be honest about everything, we have to give her that same chance too, right?" Her expression had brightened considerably, her mind filled with the promise of a life based on truth....

"She's still your mother," Brie said honestly. "She has been for twenty-five yahrens, in every way that counts. I will forever be grateful to Abby, for the wonderful young woman that you've become." Brie thought for a micron. Amy hadn't been surprised when Brie told her the truth. She also somehow knew about Ange. The only person Brie had ever told about Ange was Abby. There was only one logical conclusion, Abby had told Amy everything. Why that no-good, lousy...the least she could have done was let me know. Brie managed a smile, hoping it didn’t look as fake as it felt. “There’s nothing wrong with having two mothers. You can call her ‘mom’ if you want, it’s not going to bother me.” Brie broke out into an authentic smile. “I can just imagine the look on Charybdis’ face. Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot that you didn’t want to talk about him.”
